Sherlock (1 Viewer)

watched most of the first season last night. I'll try to power through Season 2 over the next couple of days. I thought the first season of episode 1 was one of the more entertaining things I've seen on TV in a while, even if the ending of the mystery at the end was a little less great than the rest.

Just started in on this series today... Watched the first two episodes. Pretty good, but curious to see if it's something that I'll want to keep coming back to vs. Turning to when I'm bored and want to fill time

Season 2 is better than 1

i thought Martin Freeman was excellent in the Sherlock Reveal scene in the restaurant.

and i enjoyed how they teased us with the various "explanations" of the fake death.

Not for the first time, I found myself enjoying the Holmes/Watson dynamic but kind of disappointed in the mystery. In this case, the mystery hardly mattered at all. It was just a convenient frame for Sherlock/Watson, Sherlock/Mycroft, Sherlock/Molly character stuff.

This show will never be bad. Cumberbatch and Freeman are too good and Gatiss is always at least an entertaining writer. But I was a tad disappointed.

Was really good.

Why couldn't Sherlock have just laid down on the concrete with the fake blood and all after he landed on the inflatable? Why did he have to run around while the switched bodies only to switch again?

Streaming on PBS if anyone missed it.

i wondered the same thing. why the need for the body-double, given Sherlock's explanation of how it went down?
Is that even how it really went down? It's left that he may have lied to that guy.

The terror plot didn't make much sense. Why did they need to steal a subway car? The car didn't seem programmed to move or anything, right? The plan wasn't to reattach the car to a train that was in service. I thought the plan was going to be just that; reinsert the missing car with hidden explosives. That would have made sense. But it turned out to just be a stationary bomb that could have been placed nakedly in the same spot.

SPOILER ALERT!

Not sure if I missed something in episode six (season two, part three)? I get that Moriarty was trying to ruin him. But did Sherlock know he was going to be asked to committ suicide? I rewatched the last part of the episode on the roof, and I think Sherlock alluded to you ruined me, and you won, and maybe Moriarty alluded to the choice of the meet on top of a building. But I don't think Sherlock knew of the three sniper plot previously and it was revealed then? Even at that point, Sherlock started laughing and got off the edge of the roof, stating there must be a call off option. If he had jumped, Moriarty might/almost certainly would have seen the ruse and deception. In that sense, it was convenient that Moriarty committed suicide. But Sherlock had no way of knowing that would happen. Things do sort of interlock and fit at first glance, but when you think about it, it seems to unravel. Again, maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like there are some plot holes you could drive an 18 wheel truck through. That said, great series, acting, writing, dialogue except for that quibble, enjoyed the Sunday episode, and looking forward to the next two.

While things are getting a bit out of hand, it's still a really enjoyable show.

The first episode of the series was still by far the best of the whole lot, imo.

Holy crap just watched the first two seasons on netflix. Amazing. Reminds me so much of house (which i know was based on sherlock holmes). Loved the last episode of season 2 and moriarty is a bad ###. Got the next two episodes saved on my dvr. Cant wait to watch them.

Can someone help me understand what the Women's roles were who dated the Mayflower man? Was he using them, were they in on it? I figured they all had someone they loved who died in the soldiers company, but didn't understand what their role was in the attempted murders.

I think the mayfly man courted the girls to gather information on Sholto so that he could get close enough to murder him. I think all the girls worked for or with Sholto at one point though I can't remember if Sherlock ever asked that question when they had their internet conference call with all the women.

He asked if they all had a secret and they all disconnected from the chat. He had to infer their connection.

ok that makes sense. I did not get it at the time but Sholto must have sworn them to secrecy to protect himself.

That episode was total fan-service and I loved every second of it. As others have said, the acting on this show is out of this world.

I watched ahead for episode 3 and I can say that it definitely keeps the momentum going, another great episode. Really good bounce back this season.

I guess I like some episodes better than others if I thought hard about it, but there hasn't been one yet I didn't like a lot.

Hope they keep it going beyond this season.

I thought "Sign of Three" was one of the ten best episodes of an English-language TV drama that I've ever seen. Just astounding writing and acting. I was stunned by how great it was.

I don't think there's too much danger of not getting several more seasons; of course the issues are shooting around the schedules of BC, MF and Moffat, but since they managed to churn out a pretty darn good third season despite Star Trek and the Hobbit trilogy I think they can manage. I also imagine that the BBC will pay whatever it takes to keep the show going as long as the ratings and great buzz keep up.

Episode 3 is written by Moffat (not sure if that is always the sequence), the synopsis sounds great (don't read the wiki page if you don't want spoilers).

Season 4 has been green lit, but may not be ready by Christmas due to scheduling. Moffat said while not technically commissioned, the fourth season story arc would lead naturally into a season 5, and in his opinion it could comprise the basis for some of their best material yet.

* Freeman stars in a new FX series Fargo (based on the Coen bros movie, which they signed off on as exec producers, though doesn't sound like they had a high level of participation beyond giving an OK based on the first script... it is in anthology form and may be 10 episodes) that premiers 4-15-14.

enjoyed S3E3, but two plot holes nagging at me...

1. Magnussen wouldn't have figured out who his PA was?

2. Security everywhere, but they hand-deliver Watson to Appledore with a gun in his pocket?

Haven't been in this thread in a month. Wanted to remain completely unspoiled.

For episode 3, I'm kinda surprised Sherlock thought it was the glasses since he'd said earlier Magnussen didn't digitize anything or make any copies, so doubtful he'd be transmitting the information somehow.

Anyway, in general, kind of underwhelmed. 3 episodes dedicated to the characters relationship instead of to the mystery. Seemed weird. First episode was Sherlock's return and 'oh yeah, a dude's got a bomb but we're not going to really get into that and you barely learn his name.' All fanservice for Sherlock/Watson 'shippers. Second episode was more of the same, a romp for the die-hard fans who really care about the characters but not much for mystery. Just "this guy did it." Then, last episode, no mystery at all... "This is a bad guy, and, we'll just have Sherlock shoot him." All about Mary's relationship with Watson and Sherlock getting in the middle of it. A little too focused on the fans' desire to see these people's personal lives and not much crazy mystery for my taste. Oh well. Gonna go back and read up.

was thinking about sarnoff's objections...

Sherlock Holmes was essentially the world's first noted CSI. Today, we are inundated with CSI stuff, so i can understand why the writers of Sherlock might take the mysteries in other directions. The essence of this show is the lightning-quick observations Sherlock can make with scant information. He can demonstrate that skill with puzzle-solving, such as we saw in S3E3 with his figuring out his gun shot wound, or the playful application in S3E2 where he advises the bridesmaid on which guy at the wedding she should go after.

Was a bit behind and got caught up with S3. Good, but some holes I saw people here already pointed out.

So if Moriarti didn't really blow his head off, that means Sherlock knew it at the time right? So what body was in the morgue? That implies morgue girl (sneaky hot btw) knew this as well all this time.

So was the dude with the glasses actually reading off the glasses or was that his "Mind room" or whatever?

Love this show. Thought S3.E3 was one of the weaker episodes, but still enjoyed it overall.

Would rather have seen John be the one who dispatched Magnussen at the end when he reveled that everything was stored in his memory.

Liked the episode until the ending. Wanted sherlock to outsmart him, not just flat out murder him.
But wasn't that the inevitable outcome regardless of where the files were stored? Why else would Sherlock ask Watson if he remembered to bring his gun before they got on the helicopter, unless he knew they would need it. I also agree with oso diablo's post that it was a plot hole to not have Security search Watson.

yeah, uneasy about how they might bring back Moriarty.
They just won't explain it like how they didn't explain Sherlock.
They didn't have to "explain" Sherlock, he was never shown dead. He was shown alive at the end of the episode and there were plenty of ways out of it, there was never a shot of him hitting the ground or actually injured.

Not quite the same as showing someone insert a gun in their mouth and pull the trigger.

i think we, as viewers, would have liked an explanation of how he tricked john

So when is series 4 coming out? Last I read there were some delays. I watched all 3 seasons in a week... Great show
