Shooting at Ft. Hood (1 Viewer)

There's more wild "I'm just going to say some crap so that later on I can say 'I knew it'" speculation in this thread than the entire first page of the Shark Pool.Yes, Tim...I am looking at you.
You tell me what I said that is wild speculation. I make no claim to any knowledge whatsoever. I listed three possibilities, and of the three, I sincerely hope that it's #3, meaning that Islam or Islamic beliefs have NOTHING to do with this. But since we've been given an Islamic name, since it is known that he was angry over deployment to Iraq, I don't think it's likely that it's unrelated. We'll have to wait and see.

Yeah it's pretty awful. If you are familiar with the military it sounds a lot like someone who didn't want to deploy again. Maybe people could think for themselves and realize some of these guys have been on two, three, and six tours away from their families for 6 to 12 months at a time. It's a tough living, people get crazy. Add in all the stuff you see in war and there is an awful lot of unhealthy feelings going on in people. But just saying it was probably some crazy Muslims is easier for us to digest and explain so let's just go that route. Can't hurt can it?
Or maybe they served him pork chops in the chow line. :coffee:

My point is that none of us has any idea of what went on. I just don't understand the point of speculating other than to serve as something to argue about or to look back at later.

Lots of interesting things being said by a lot of meaningless people on a fantasy football message board right now. Or maybe I transposed interesting and meaningless. Whatever. Good spot to throw out an "I'm more important than you" Doc D, by the way. This is a pretty horrible thing that happend and the way a few of you are acting is pretty disgusting.

All of it. You're guessing. No point in even discussing your list. "We'll have to wait and see." Exactly

Major Malik Assan (sp?) is the primary shooter.
I cannot wait to hear how they spin this.
He is a major. Not sure what spin you are expecting.
That's a pretty good start.
What exactly are you talking about? It would seem unlikely that a guy would rise to the level of Major (which takes the better part of a decade plus making it through up or out promotions) just to launch some kind of attack.

From the CNN article I was just reading.....
Fort Hood is home to the Warrior Combat Stress Reset Program, which is designed to help soldiers overcome combat stress issues.

I'm not guessing at all. I said either this is related to terrorism and/or Islam, or it is not. I've made no conclusions. But I do think it's worth discussing that, per ABC, this man is a recent convert to Islam, and that he was reportedly angry about deployment to the Middle East. ABC also reports that he was hostile to the whole idea of American involvement in the Middle East.

I don't see why we can't discuss this. Isn't this a discussion board?

What does this mean? I'm only speaking from perspective, I've deployed and been associated with the military for an awfully long time. I also have worked this stuff all day for internal communications. I just don't appreciate the wild speculation.

This isn't good. Among other things, this may be a terrible day for Arab-Americans. I really hope this is not an act of terrorism. I very much fear it is, though.
Please pull your head out of your ###.
If you disagree with my comments, then say so and explain why. You needn't insult me. You do that a lot. There's no reason to be rude to me or anyone else here.
When you start saying idiotic things, there is plenty of reason to be rude.

FWIW, I agree with Doctor Detroit that it's very unlikely that this is an act of international terrorism. At this point I don't see how we can rule it out, though.

In that case, don't be surprised if people insult you on a regular basis.

A whole bunch of new video will be coming out soon on the major networks from Fort Hood. Some of it is basic indoor Cavalry video but it shouws more than they are showing now. Press Conference coming also, but they still don't know a whole lot. Army CID would have to do a ton of quick turn investigating and the FBI is involved. I don't think we are going to know much more today. Senseless, shameful, and sad. 40+ soldiers eitehr getting ready to deploy or helping those folks deploy were killed or wounded.

What can be done for these soldiers and their families? Would giving to the Red Cross accomplish anything? Is there a veteran's fund for the families? Does anyone know?

Yes. Red Cross makes all the notifications and provides a ton of assistance in times of tradgedy. The people who really help are here. If you want to donate money to help soldiers and their families, donate to them.

Is there a veteran's fund for the families? Does anyone know?
Families probably haven't even been notified of deaths yet. It's not something that happens in minutes.

If he was hostile about the idea of American involvement in the Middle East, why stay in the military? Why join at all? Not that I expect a person capable of this heinous crime to possess reasonable thought...

Come on, you have to take anything thats reported right now as highly speculative. Most of what we "know" about Columbine (they were bullied loners, asked people if they believed in God right before they capped them, etc) turned out to be completely made up.

Honestly I've posted here long enough to know something of your background and I acutally appreciate your persepctive in threads like this. I don't care for the wild speculation either. I just think there's a time for the 'you don't know what I know' and this isn't it, in my opinion. I'd like to think that this is one of those situations where we can sift through the BS together and have civil discourse as to what the hell is going on. And if I think you can add valid perspective in here, I'm sure others do as well.

I agree. But that doesn't mean it's not worth discussing. This is a discussion board. This is not an angry mob in front of a mosque or something. We can have a discussion, speculate about events, discuss their liklihood. We can do it civilly without throwing insults at each other. That's all I'm doing. I think it's likelier than not that there was a motive here related to someone's misapplication of Islamic beliefs. I hope I'm wrong.

The new video was shot 10 minutes after the shootings. My good buddy shot it and I made fun of him for it being so shaky. He noted that they were taking cover from the second shooter. :lmao:

It was a Cessna...wait, a larger aircraft that malfunctioned....wait, a commercial jet that was way off course...two planes? What?

Gotcha. I erased that one post, was pretty dumb. I'm just frustrated because I'm trying to get all the info before the external media and I have two people there at Fort Hood helping but I'm still waiting. Gonna be a long night.

A major with a Muslim name who is now a mass murderer - allegedly. To coin a God-awful phrase, "it is what it is." Again, I can't wait to see how they spin it. I've already heard on national radio (conservative) that the FBI is saying 'not to worry, this is not a terrorist act.' I do not have a link, sorry.

Add me to the list of people who think DD's perspective on this is invaluable.

Even if this was motivated by religious beliefs, there are thousands of Americans that are Islamic who have served and continue to serve honorably in the United States Armed Services. This is important to remember.

Absolutely understood.

If there was more than one shooter then it was obviously planned and if it was planned I think the odds of this being religious or terrorist based goes up. I'm hoping the reports are mistaken and it was just one guy going nuts.

They are saying there might be video from inside during the shootings if anyone was filming any ceremonies. Is that true?

I'm one of your fans here. But on this subject, I'm starting to think you've lost it. No one in this thread but you is speculating this was motivated by religious beliefs, and yet you're now posting the counterpoint to your own speculation?ETA: While I was typing, jonessed joined your group of speculators. Still, this whole internal dialogue you're playing out in the thread strikes me as very odd, GB.

It's going to be real interesting to see the outpouring of cash and stuff that this gets versus the dozen plus that died just last week in a helicopter crash, but that happened over there so it doesn't mean as much.

Why do you insist on talking to people like they are children or have some lowbrow global understanding?

Everything I have heard is one confirmed shooter. The two guys under custody can be under custody for many reasons without direct involvement.

And he was an MD which means he had less time in the Army than a normal Major, so I was wrong about that. No one really knows what's going on right now.

 You're just about the only person in this thread that has suggested the motive behind this has something to do with Islam."Somebody stole my bike. I'm going to guess it was a black guy. But just remember there are a lot of good black people out there."

for some reason, I read Tim's posts imagining the voice of Clark Griswold.. strange

The reporter on CNN keeps reporting the shooter is between39 and 40 years old. I wish she would stop saying that.
