I'm caught up on GoT and Veep and looking for a new show to start this week.

Should I start The Wire or Silicon Valley or something else?

TIA

(will answer yours)

both good shows.  The Wire is the GOAT, just objectively speaking.  you can get through Silicon Valley a lot quicker (only 2 seasons so far and the 3rd just started) and it's a lot 'lighter' of a watch, but The Wire is amazing.  depends what you're in the mood for.  can't really go wrong either way.

The Wire is a must-watch for sure.

I don't rank it as my favorite all-time like a LOT of other people, but it's definitely Top 10.

Have watched it through 4 or 5 times and I'll probably do it a few more.

Isn't that like 80 hours through each time.  Are you tied down to a bed?

I am through 4 episodes of the Wire now, it is okay.  Hope it gets better.  Don't have the urge to watch episode 5 right now and it has been 2 weeks since episode 4.

People building up the wire as the GOAT are doing the OP a serious disservice.  I don't mean to say that it doesn't deserve the title, but you're building up a level of expectation that will easily lead to disappointment.

In an effort to right the ship, if you put a premium on the quality of a show's characters and dramatic realism, you should enjoy this show.  If you're expecting wall to wall action or suspense, you will be let down.

The Wire is up there with Breaking Bad and the Sopranos for me. An all-time great show. Dig up some old interviews on the youtubes with David Simon about the show too. There's a lot of interesting subtext.

A below the radar show that is excellent is Satisfaction on USA.  it is about a guy who catches his wife having sex with a male hooker and chases the hooker down.  He ends up with the guy's cell phone and starts to hook for himself when the phone starts to ring. First season is really good but the second season is amazing.

The Wire is an incredible show.  It does have a higher barrier to entry than most, as it has a large cast ( all excellent) and a somewhat complex storyline interweaving everybody.  The realism is great, and it requires your attention, but I can understand that it may not be what everybody is looking for.

Saying it's overrated is very nice proof that you can always find someone to say anything is overrated.

'Threesome with Halle Berry and Emily Ratajkowski?  Meh.'

Google the scene where they document a crime scene saying nothing but #### and you've seen all there is to see.

It's definitely my favorite show ever but I think it's also hurt by a lot of shows that came after it which people got used to binging through, most of which had a style more conducive to binge watching than The Wire. There's a lot to take in, and I don't think you can automatically appreciate it as much by watching 4 episodes in a row.

I know that sounds douchey but I think it's true.

Well said.  It definitely takes some effort to get into the first season, but once you're in it is worth it.

This is definitely true.  As good as The Wire is, it never gave you that "OMG I CANT WAIT UNTIL NEXT WEEK TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS" feeling.

The ending music on each episode was so ####### depressing too - Sunday night, 10 PM with nothing in front of you but not enough sleep before Monday morning.

joe t i have read a lot of your posts around here through the years and trust me on this brohan you are a totally a sons of anarchy kind of brohan take that to the bank brochoppero

Yea, definitely not that kind of show. It doesn't fit with the more modern concept of "oooh, what happens to character x" and "after-show" talk shows. The Wire is more a slow burn, and when it's finally over, you realize how great it was. GOAT in my mind. Been through it about 4 times, and it still feels fresh.

I was going to suggest California Dreams or Saved By The Bell.
Breaking Bad is my favorite series ever. I was told by you guys the Wire is comparable - not close so far.  GOT is also a favorite along with Walking Dead.  Saved by the Bell was pretty awesome though.

I binged season 1-4 1/2  for some odd reason I stopped and havnt missed it., debating starting up again or not

Tried Silicon Valley as well.  It was not good.

Think I'll just go with The Wire for now.  Will report back.
