Silicon Valley - New Mike Judge 8-Part HBO Series (1 Viewer)

Am I the only one that feels this show has totally dropped off? Especially in comparison to Veep, which is firing on all cylinders this season.

The storyline is just so meh and Richard is a such an unlikeable protagonist.

Noticeably worse plot this season.  However, the non Richard/Raviga characters are still ####### hilarious

This is my struggle. Wonder if I would be happier with Silicon Valley if I didn't love Veep so much. Planning on binge watching it again after the season is over.

No I think this season has been hilarious but I do agree Richard is a horrible character.

Honestly, I barely pay attention to the main plot anymore,   I enjoy all the dialogue

 piedpiper.com is pretty good........

“And his name that sat on him was Erlich, and Profligacy followed with him!” (With apologies to Revelation 6:8.)

I have sort of felt this way but couldn't put my finger on what it was about the show I didn't like; then after watching tonight's episode it was clear as day.  Richard is a tool.

Jared biting his nails at the Riviga party :lmao:

I've flip flopped my favorite characters all season. Gavin has climbed the ranks for me, the animals in every board meeting :lmao:

Gilfoyle is consistently solid and him & Dinesh are a strong duo. Erlich is always solid... Richard is always meh, love Bighead too, wish they could've kept him rich in some sort of subplot or even a spinoff.

I've always had issues with this show when they throw in the last minute huge problem/dumb mistake in order to kill any momentum the company has and keep the up/down/up cycle going. So I appreciated that the daily active users issue made plenty of sense for the plot and could be seen coming back when they first gave the beta to the non-tech chick and she was the only one who didn't like it.

Did anyone else notice the DAU number go back and fourth from 199 to 200 and back. Seemed like such an obvious catch, didn't think it would be missed in editing. I thought they would use it as a gag or something but they never did.

I thought that was intentional. Not knowing how a DAU is actually determined, I figured it meant that someone who had previously used the app (to keep it simple) 7 times over the prior 24x7=168 hours has now used it only 6 times over the most recent 168 hours once it refreshed so they fell out of the count.

I've come 180 on this.  I agree he's probably the weakest character on the show but it's almost by design.  Every scene he is in is featuring the other character and he is surounded by so many..... It's a great show.

Erlich is still the best character to me.  The way they present his hubris is amazing.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it before but the actor who plays Gilfoyle (Martin Starr) also played Bill in Freaks and Geeks.  When I first found that out I was

I think he also plays the snarky bearded guy in every Judd Aptow movie ever made

I am starting to lose a bit of patience with the show.

Sometimes I feel like I'm watching because I"m supposed to...  because I'm invested in it thus far, and in the hopes that another "mean jerk time" type of hilarious moment occurs.

I have no issue with suspending disbelief, but to think that he wouldn't have thought to have regular people test a major platform before release sounds hard to believe.

Never worked with "super" software/engineer guys I see.

They assume if you don't "get it" then you never will.

There is still a lot of funny moments.  I could watch a show with just Ellich, Dinesh, Gilfoyle, and Jian Yang sharing a house.  There is no need for the continuous roller coaster.  One week their company is worth hundreds of millions.  The next week they're completely broke.  Slow down the plot and have more times for Gilfoyle to troll Dinesh.

Need big head too. Much like seinfeld. Jerry was thd worse character. Richard is who u could do without here.

Engineers are strange people.... There is a whole floor of them below my floor, blindly staring at you is how they say hi.

I would love these characters in more of Seinfeld/Sunny approach where it is a show about nothing.
That's kind of the "problem" I see with TV today.  I agree with you totally, I love this show because of the characters/actors and the dialogue, I couldn't frankly care less about the overall plot.  But you do that and every avclub or Sepinwall in the world starts ripping your show as being pointless and meandering and then potential new viewers look somewhere else because of negative reviews.  It's tough in the internet era to just be FUNNY and nothing else, at least with a show that has a story arc and not just episodes that are stand-alone vignettes.

:goodposting:

what about if they just made it about the incubator- you could have some of the things in development go for several episodes or even seasons, but basically it's a bunch of stupid ideas being helped to be developed by that crew.

and I have a new favorite character every week. been loving Jared lately- especially because I have a coworker who looks and sounds way too much like him.

Agree with this. I'm a little surprised to see the nitpicking on the plot in this thread (well, maybe I'm not entirely surprised; this is the FFA). To me, the plot in a comedy like this is just a vehicle to keep putting the characters in situations where they can be funny. As long as that's happening, it doesn't matter how plausible the underlying story is.

The problem is, IMO, the current plot in S3 is taking up too much time and being absurd to the point of distraction.

Love Jared.  Loved Zach Woods in the office.  Both characters are so hilariously creepy.  Gabe never ####ed like Jared though.

One of Sepinwall's favorite recent shows was Louie, which had less of a story arc than Seinfeld.

Point taken, but I'm not sure that would work here. They've already established this as a serialized comedy. I also feel like most critics are afraid to criticize Louie because it would give them the stink of "this guy/gal doesn't GET it."

Dinesh's video app is going to save the day to end this season
well, yeah.

that goes back to having this just be an incubator show, IMO... opens it up to not have to be a running story-line and just be them goofing around, which all of us would happily watch.
