Simeon Rice cut (1 Viewer)

They're talking about it right now.

I thought Rice was still pretty good. Did he decline a lot last year or is this strictly a salary cap move? Interesting that it came the same day that they signed Gains Adams.

Wow man, that's pretty crazy.

I wonder where he'll go? Gee, I wonder if there's a team out there who's head coach loves signing Ex-Buccaneer personnel. Hmm, that's a thinker....

He'll be a Lion by Monday.

There's a bit of a buzz around Jacksonville. Reggie Heyward is coming off an achilles injury and isn't likely to be 100% for a while so it might make sense.

Can't believe they cut this guy. He's only 33 and will eventually be a hall of famer.
Only 33? Uh, this is the NFL. 33 for a DE is OLD. 2 sacks pretty much says it all. He's at best an average DE now, and an expensive one at that.

I could see the Redskins maybe giving him a look, though I don't think they can afford him under the cap.

Uh, says who? Reggie White, Bruce Smith, Kevin Greene, John Randle, Chris Doleman, Michael Strahan, etc (virtually all of the top DEs sackwise) have played into their late 30s.

You can't believe they cut a 33 yr old coming off major shoulder surgery with $10 mil coming to him this year? Really?

His cap number was 7 million or so. He's well worth that, especially given Gruden's hotseat.

Michael Strahan isn't in his late 30s.Randle sucked in his last two years (34, 35). Again not late 30s.Smith went down hill fast at 35.And most of the other guys bounced around various teams in their mid 30s, and had moderate success. So no, they don't play into their late 30s. You should look up the word "late". Rice was garbage last year. He got hurt. He has a big contract. And he's no longer worth it. Seems fairly clear to me.

Randle had 32 sacks at 33 and older.Doleman had 64Smith had 74White had 62Greene had 61Strahan has had 19 and is continuingIt appears that the Bucs cut him after he failed a physical though; this wasn't a planned thing. Maybe his injury hasn't healed. Before last year he had 10 sacks or more in every season in which he tried, with no signs of slowing.

I wonder what kind of cap hit the Bucs took ... probably pretty large, but they have a good bit of room IIRC.

Editd to add:

[CELEBRATION - Tampa Bay Buccaneers General Manger Bruce Allen said Simeon Rice was cut Thursday evening because he failed a physical.

Rice injured his left shoulder last season and had surgery, but according to team doctors, Rice was not ready to play. In an interview with Tribune reporter Ira Kaufman, Rice admitted he was not at 100 percent, but was befuddled and angry about his release.

Bucs linebacker Derrick Brooks was reportedly see walking Rice to his car after the release and was in tears. :lmao:
As usual, Simeon Rice was at no loss for words when asked about his release from the Bucs.

“The next step is to let my body heal up and then I’m gonna come back like a maniac,” said Rice, who was on his way to Chicago Thursday evening. “I’m an ageless wonder, and I want to play for someone who will respect me.

I’m the most consistent thing they ever had over there in Tampa. I played two games more than I had to with one arm. I’m not right yet, but I’ll be right in three or four weeks.

“I know one thing: they got a lot of big shoes to fill right now in Tampa.”
http://www.tboblogs.com/index.php/sports/related/C546/One thing is for sure, the Bucs need Gaines Adams in camp ASAP.

According to people with access to this info, the Skins are currently $7 million under the cap, which is ample room to add a depth player should injuries arise, and also to account for any jump in Cooley's cap number should that get done soon (more on that in a paragraph or two).

Is this where everyone says he should go to their own favorite team?
:lmao: I love these threads. "Boy I'd sure love him in _______" or "He'd sure look great in ________"He failed a physical. Probably wouldn't be ready for a month at least, and acknowledged as much when he left today. He was pretty bad last year and was due 7.5M this year.Hate to see him go, since they need a pass-rusher so badly, but that's the way it goes I guess.

BTW - For of those that are recommending 3-4 D's...think again! He's a speed rushing DE, not a DL in a 3-4 and not a LB. :goodposting:

I guess John Gruden wasn't kidding when he said GA will be going up against Walter Jones week 1. Simeon had a great run here in Tampa, but it's time to admit it's over. Would he still be here if the Bucs drafted Calvin Johnson, or JT? Maybe, but thats not how things played out. We had the opportunity to draft an elite DE early in the draft to replace one of the best DE in the game (when he was healthy). Don't see how anyone can say it's a bad move since he was bound to leave in a year anyways. Besides, we are officially in the re-build. If you try and keep those big salaries around your team can never dig itself out of cap hell (see Atlanta Falcons).

Farewell Simeon, all the Bucs believed you when you said you were faster than Mike Vick!

fwiw, I think it's a guarantee he signs with Detroit. He has spoken very highly of Marinelli as recent as last year. Doesn't really say much positive about JG :goodposting: In fact, as recent as last year I heard an interview of him praising Rod. I almost wondered if it could have been taken as an insult to Monte and Gruden, but maybe I look too deep into things. Gruden did bench him for the San Fran game a few years ago because he was late for a meeting, a game we lost btw. I don't think it's a big secret that Simeon butts heads with a few people at One Buc. If the relationship was great he would have tried to rework a deal the way Brooks did.

I don't really think he would have been that great of a role model for GA anyways.

Huge Buc fan here, watch every game.........I won't miss him a bit. Takes plays off, sucks against the run, bad attitude. And there is no cap hit, he was in the last year of the contract. I'd be much more excited about watching Gaines Adams play than listen to Rice preach how he was going to set he sack record, blah blah blah.......he sucks now and whoever thinks it will help their team if they get him should watch some film. One exception: a team with some great interior DL who will stop the run might be a good fit...someone mentioned NE and that sounds about right.

Simeon Rice in the Hall of Fame? Not a chance in hell. He has made two pro bowls and one all-pro team in his entire career, and if he plays the run tomorrow, it'll be the first time.

Block has never seen him play, go easy on him.

17 more sacks and Rice will be 5th all time.
Cool. He'll also only have 2 career pro bowls and 1 career all-pro, and the next time he plays the run will still be his first. He's not making the hall of fame- no way, no how, no discussion. In fact, we could debate whether he'd even make the "Hall of Very Good".

Rice 2007 to 2009 will = Lance Johnstone of 2004 to 2005

Get him in purple, Ziggy.

Let him become a situational pass rusher to pad his stats, and give a breather to Udeze and James.

Love him or hate him, but how does a Top-10 sack guy NOT make the HOF? :bye:

It's pretty simple. Only make 1 All-Pro team.Seriously, Bledsoe and Testeverde are #6 and #7 in career passing yards, but neither will ever get a whiff of the HoF. Dave Krieg is 10th in attempts and TD passes and he's not getting anywhere near Canton. Tiki Barber is 10th in career yards from scrimmage, and he won't make the Hall, either. Art Freaking Monk was #1 in NFL history in terms of receptions when he retired, and he's still waiting for the call (in fact, the top-10 receptions list is practically a who's who of players in the Hall of Very Good- Monk, Isaac Bruce, Jimmy Smith, Keenan McCardell, Irving Fryar, and Rod Smith sitting 2 receptions short of 10th and a lock to crack it this season). Making a top-10 career list doesn't guarantee you a trip to the Hall, *ESPECIALLY* if you were only twice one of the three best players at your position IN YOUR OWN CONFERENCE, and only once one of the two best players at your position in the league, and even *MORE ESPECIALLY* when that "statistic" has only been kept since the 1980s, anyway.Besides, Rice *ISN'T* a top-10 sack guy. Right now, he's 13th on the "all-time" sack list (with "all-time" meaning since the early '80s, not counting the accomplishments of guys like Deacon Jones and Jack Youngblood, just to name the first couple that come to mind). If you factored in the accomplishments of the DEs from the 60s and 70s, I wouldn't be surprised if Simeon Rice finished his career outside of the top-20 in total sacks. And he never played the run, was never a leader, was never much of a team player, isn't a media darling, has never won any awards worth noting, has never compared well to his peers, and pretty much has nothing else going for him whatsoever outside of his (great but not THAT great) ability to get to the QB.Edit: If Simeon Rice makes the hall of fame, I will cut off my arm and eat it with a spoon. Roughly speaking, I'd say he has about a 0% chance. No way, no how- it just ain't gonna happen.

Rice has clearly been on the down swing of his career recently. There are very few teams that should seriously entertain the idea of bringing him IMO. Det and Wash are really the only ones that come to my mind.

I hope people are now realizing how many players Warren Sapp helped to look better than they actually were.

Simeon was a definite force when that D was clicking, especially the SB year. His speed and height was intimidating. His long arms reaked havoc in the backfield. That NFCC game in Philly was a great example. But as others have said, he won't be sorely missed at this point. Time to move on.
