Hmm, might have to change what I just said.

The GFS gives the entire DC/Balt metro 28"+

This is insanity. Would truly be a once in a lifetime event if it verifies. Comparable to the famous Washington-Jefferson snow, when both of those guys wrote in their diaries about a 3-foot snowstorm.
This is so annoying. Every 12 hours a different map comes out with a dramatically different NYC forecast. This looks like 3-6 inches. Another one a few hours earlier looked like a foot or more.

Sweet Jesus. Does that say 43.6 in JEFFERSON CO, WV (near Harper's Ferry for you outlanders)?
I think it's talking about the high mark on that map, roughly Berryville VA.
Yeah, the "43.6" is offset and placed over WV - worded badly on my part.
The center of the 3 in that 43 essentially points to my house. We appear to be in a 40 band.

I trust Koya's prediction the most.

So, we have more clarity.

4-24 inches for NY. <_<

My intention is to shovel every hour or two (see? I'm already waffling) during waking hours, then up every 3 or 4 hours during sleep time. I can keep up with my sidewalk and driveway, I think, but - the blessing and curse both of living on the same street as a hospital - the snow plows come through so often, they'll block my driveway with that hard-assed #### that's hard to shovel. During a normal, decent-sized snowfall they are coming through every 15 minutes. I'm just imagining a continuous conga line of trucks and I'll have a 14 foot ice-drift blocking me in.

Food - check

Booze - check

Tobacco - check

Genny-that-should-auto-start-when-power-goes-out - dunno
I'd like to shovel at least once before I turn in Friday, and first thing Saturday morning, then again around noon, then one more time. If I can keep the shoveling to under 10 inches each time I should be ok.

Wtf?!?!?!?!

One minute it's 3 inches. The next it's 3 feet.

What a job. I need this job. I wish this kind of wild approximation and missing was widely accepted in my profession.

Stay safe up there.

When i hear of a chance of a good snowstorm i immediately love coming to this thread. I don't even care how accurate the info is, the passion you guys have should replace the weather portion of the nightly news every time.

I made it out of the grocery store in one piece. No bread or milk to be found and the alcohol was also wiped out.

And also add in the bottled water as gone.

Latest NAM run shows almost 2 feet everywhere up the I-95 corridor almost to the Mass Pike. Don't believe it, the massive amounts of precip this model shows are a long running joke among weather geeks.

But Philly and central NJ are looking better and better for 18" or so

I love how everyone is stocking up on the "essentials" as if we won't be able to get out of our homes for weeks on end.

For one, almost every household owns a ####### 4WD usually SUV nowadays. Second, that gas station place and 7-11 AIN'T CLOSING. If they stayed open during sandy they are staying open here.

Finally, you get hungry? Order chinese.

#### the mail service, they will deliver in ANYthing. Usually in a 1979 rear wheel drive Datsun, at that.
LOL. Gas Buddy sent me a fuel available alert today. I live near Sheik. I can walk to a WAWA if I have to.

I just left Home Depot in Bed Stuy and people are going nuts. A guy that has to be a bodega owner bought ALL remaining snow shovels. About 50. What a doosh.
As if Home Depot is not bad enough in the burbs, I can only image the horrors that must be seen at Home Depot in Bed Stuy.
It really is the worst Home Depot in the country. But it's a known commodity. So it's actually nice to have close by.
Ace is the Place.

Accumulations... snow accumulation of 18 to 24 inches in the eastern suburbs of Baltimore... and 24 to 30 inches in the western suburbs. The city of Baltimore is expected to receive around 24 inches.

This is the RGEM, a pretty good short-term model:

http://i.imgur.com/F6RyZXa.png

I think this is a decent accumulation map, a lot more realistic than the NAM. Still, using just 10:1 ratio, there is a chance totals go higher.

I really can't believe the entire DC/Baltimore is now only about 20 hours from a widespread 20" with a realistic chance for some areas to hit 30". People around here are talking about work on Monday and don't really understand what's about to happen. I say work on Wednesday, maybe. School? Maybe Friday? We'll see. Can't believe all the area districts closed today, since it won't snow (at least here) until after dark tomorrow. They're going to regret taking that day when they're still in school on June 23.

Now it looks like a sperm whale

GFS is actually scaring me a little right now. It's like 3' for everyone in the region, some places around DC nearing 40".

It's one thing when the NAM does this, but I feel like this is now something that has never been seen before 24 hours out on one of the high resolution models. Will post some maps if I can get them.

This is like end of the world, new Ice Age stuff

Wes Junker and a few others are on a radio blog now basically throwing it out saying it's unrealistic.

Central jersey has been right around a foot average whether it be the higher end on the lower projections or the lower end on the higher projections.

That makes sense. Ha, I was torn between excitement and fear.

So the Cardinals are reportedly not changing their plans fo fly in Saturday for the game. What are the chances the game gets postponed?

Our crews had a safety briefing this morning before heading out on trouble. They've been told to pack for 7 days and will leave in the next couple of hours.

The crews have been briefed to be aware of local drivers who - we have to assume - are not able to handle driving in winter weather. Unfortunately, FE trucks are white, but they do have reflective red and white striping to make them more visible, along with amber strobe lights and orange cones. Our trucks should have chains on them while driving in the area and the crews will be wearing reflective vests while working.

If you do see a crew, please don't rush up to the truck. While the truck itself is grounded, they may be working on downed wire that we treat as if it were hot. You also have to worry about step potential (i.e., the voltage difference between your feet while walking). Our linemen wear dielectric overshoes to mitigate against this. If you want to speak to a lineman, stay at least 20-30 feet away and get their attention. They may not be able to tell you much of anything - remember, they may not be familiar with the area and they are only given one call at a time. Your neighborhood may be next, or it may not. They won't know and please don't get mad at them if they don't know. They also don't need your help. :D

Restoration is done in the following order:

1) transmission (substation to substation)

2) hospitals, first responder locations and health-risk customers (e.g. oxygen);

3) neighborhoods with crews going to the location with the highest number of customers out and working their way down to single customers. It's not based on who is off the longest.

These guys will be far from home, tired, cold and working around downed/damaged equipment in unfamiliar territory. So, give them a little grace and you'll be back on soon.

Well that sucks. SW Ohio went from about 4" to now 1-2". This morning, the news said my area would get a "dusting". Was looking forward to taking the boys sledding this weekend.

So I worked on my generator for about 3 hours last night. IN attempting to start it 2 nights ago, the rope on the pull start broke. So I had to disassemble the pull start and install new rope - only the rope I got at my local Home Depot was just a little too large to thread through the hole (an issue I'm very familiar with, giggidy). I ended up having to go with multiple strands of string and got that issue fixed. New spark plug, and disassembled the air box to spray "starter fluid" directly into the carburetor. That allowed it to fire up for a second or two before cutting out - likely meaning a gunked up carburetor. I then (with the help of my MIL) got the thing into the back of my SUV in the hopes of finding a local small engine mechanic who can give it a quick look this morning and possibly fix what ails it - likely with me having to pull out the sob story of having a 6 month old baby at home.

All this trouble I'm going through simply means we will not lose power.

About an inch here in Lynchburg, VA and coming down pretty hard.

I hope I bunkered enough booze. About 60 PBR's, 48 various IPA's, and about a gallon and a half of bourbon. It might be enough to last until we see daylight again, but it certainly won't be enough to ease the pain from the money it's costing me to close the restaurant for 2-5? days.

Definitely going to hit you up the next time I'm down that way. Stay safe this weekend.
