The chive is great stuff.
I saw a lot of that too, and in an odd way it really made me even more pissed off today. It's people like that who made me fall in love with this town. It actually hurts to witness this place ground to a halt and people unable to find shelter. It all seems like a really fundamental failure that could be easily avoided. It's embarrassing most of all, because it made national news and just seems completely absurd. I'd be laughing if I lived somewhere else.

I have to say, I'm shocked that my son's school in NC has been closed for 4 days now. We only got an inch or two. I grew up in Chicago and can only recall about 6-7 times in my 12 years of school when it was cancelled due to snow.
I'm in the 24" part...

I've heard that we've gotten 10' of snow this winter so far..that's 10 FEET... We currently have 2 FEET standing on the ground... much deeper in the drifts..

We're supposed to get 6 inches of snow here in Illinois today and tonight. People are preemptively abandoning their cars to get the best spots.

Here's a larger version of the same map linked by the creator at Reddit.

Surprised about cities like Chattanooga and Knoxville, Tennessee. I figured that, due to elevation, Eastern Tennesse was not much better off in winter than more northern inland towns like Albany, NY or Madison, WI..

EDIT: Updated version of the same map -- adds Canada and better fleshes out the upper Rocky Mountain states.

14" here in Edison, NJ. There's a guy on facebook that goes by the name Severe NJ Weather. He called this storm a week and nailed it. He's been mroe accurate than all of the news people including the weather channel. He's like the Rain Man of weather.
Have you been following his feud with weatherboy? Who knew amateur meteorologists were so catty
I have. Pure comedy.
Is this real or schtick. If real, link please.
This was posted on severe nj weather's facebook today... feud picking up again today...

Severe NJ Weather
Due to Weatherboy Weather engaging in copyright infringement and reproducing Euro images without permission (which caused most of yesterday's panic), WeatherBell no longer allows the Euro to be posted. Therefore, I can no longer post Euro graphics here. Thank you for ruining this feature for my entire fanbase...you truly are a special breed. You hide behind a a cartoon avatar boy yet you say you are a team of meteorologists. Some say you are a washed-up broadcast meterologist names Michael Phillips. You purchase fake likes from Istanbul, Turkey for your facebook page. You then try to purchase fake likes for my facebook page to tarnish the 100% organic fanbase that I have. Well guess what WeatherBoy, facebook security whacked all fake likes from my page and now I've almost back to where I was with pure organic likes...you know...real people who engage in a facebook page. Was that money worth it?

You staged a huge fit when the Tommy G Show chose me over you to call in and do weather reports. You staged a huge fit when the Trentonian chose me to write about and write for them. Guess what...your own friends sold you out on this information. I saw you try to degrade me and boost your accuracy to the author of my article a few minutes after it was posted publicly. It's flat out creepy.

Don't ever attack this facebook page again little boy. Don't ever post European model slides from WxBell again because its illegal. And most of all, don't ever cause mass-hysteria again with a 240 hour control run of an experimental model. Capiche? You've personally made the internet a worse place. </rant>

Now back to tracking our Monday and mid-week system. Be safe! JC

Saw this too. Hysterical.

I'm really suprised that Georgia and Alabama don't have something in place to deal with 2 inches of snow and ice.

I understand that they don't get much snow, and if they got hit with ten or twelve inches out of the blue, something like this might happen, but two inches?

It's not as though they sit on the Equator and there is no chance of this ever happening.
We do have some equipment, but not the fleets of salt trucks that exist up north. It costs millions of dollars to purchase and maintain all that stuff, and it would get used once every 1-2 years. Not making excuses because I think DOT did a terrible job and it's now a huge national embarrassment, but it was a combination of factors that caused this. The snow in this area was worst than forecasted, and it hit at midday, and everyone got on the roads at the same time. The snow didn't stick to the roads for a couple of hours from what I witnessed, so it was just wet, then the temps kept dropping and it froze into a thick layer of ice. The roads weren't pre-treated, and the salt trucks couldn't salt the roads because of the gridlock. So our roads are skating rinks. I saw cars on TV trying to go 2mph and sliding. It's very hilly here too.
Same problem we had in Nashville a couple years ago. It snowed/iced more than expected and hit around 3 o'clock. By 5, the entire city was in gridlock and trucks couldn't salt anything, but nowhere near the degree to Atlanta. That was ridiculous and should never happen.

Just got the call that the office is closed. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention yesterday due to the game, but I had no idea this was a possibility. Pleasant surprise. Back to bed..

Having that debate right now about whether I try to trek into the office or not. We've got probably 4-5 inches out there right now, it's still coming down pretty hard, and we're expecting 5-8. Should snow until about 4pm. I could potentially make it into Manhattan, but getting up to the train will be a real PIA; getting back home in the evening is what I'm more concerned about. My backup is to go hole up at the local Starbucks here in town and work there.

I never want to be the wimp who doesn't show up when things aren't so bad, but out in my neck of the woods this morning, it's looking pretty crappy. Decisions, decisions...

sleet this morning now its snow. 20 miles to work and its nothing but rain. atleast my car is nice and clean.. hope this ride home wont be too bad.. very tempted to call out tomorrow already  and make a nice chili or pot roast..

you have my permission to work from home today.

Made it into work today, roads were a joke but made it nonetheless.

Probably 3" already down here, supposed to end up with 4-8" when its all said and done.

You think the ####### will be making an appearance at the office today?

I would stay in bed watching stuff on Netflix all day and occasionally masturbating. I'd keep the laptop open next to me and move the cursor every 5 minutes so it doesn't look like I'm idle.

There is most likely an app you can download on your phone that always shows available.

yesterday our forecast for today was 1"-3". Today its 6"-8". Whats the point of meteorologists again?
Some times storms move, slow down, speed up, etc. Weather forecasting is extremely complex.
You gotta admit, though- the weather guys/gals on TV have it the best. Laugh, shrug, have fun- "Who knows!?"

We've been pretty much the exact opposite. Initially we were supposed to get the largest snow totals in my area but so far the temperatures have stayed just warm enough to keep it all rain. The schools are probably all mad since almost all of them closed today.

couldn't help but laugh this past Saturday-- I'm outside walking my dog in gym shorts and a t-shirt with no shoes on. Just three days prior it was 5 degrees with ice all over the roads. I'll take Georgia weather any day over those Michigan winters.

As long as a meteorologist doesn't say 100% or 0%, then they're never wrong. "10% chance we get more than 4" of snow." The next day, it dumps 2 feet, and they're still right.

I went in to work during the big snow 2 weeks ago, only to leave at 11, and spend 2 hours driving home...Today, I didn't even bother going in, and the office closed at noon...again, with most of the interstate I take home closed for yet another accident. I wonder why so many places have to wait until it's actively snowing before they post closures when it's clear that something is coming.

I'm so sick of snow.

Well I skipped out today, glad I did. This area is a mess. Has to be nearly 8" already out there and it looks like we have another 2-3 hours of good snowfall. It's funny how they overhype so many storms for ratings and they end up being nothing, but I guess with the SB in town and all the focus on that they had other things going on last night and all of the sudden we all woke up this morning and it was like "holy crap."

I barely got out car down our big hill of a driveway this morning, and when I got back after getting coffee and doing a little work at Starbucks, I went to our much flatter (but still slight hill) other driveway, and it took me a good ten minutes to get the car into the driveway (had to throw it into low gear, back in and out a bunch, was sliding all over). Nice mess out there.

Are we still expecting this 3 feet of superstorm next weekend???

No superstorm. This storm altered because the colder air got pushed north which moved the entire system.

I think a large part of the area may get more snow on Wednesday though.

Still seeing places calling for a big nor'easter Sunday/Monday. Something's coming, they're just not sure how big it will be.

We really got a pretty decent amount of snow today. It never looked like it was snowing that hard, but it really accumulated. Had to be at least 8-10 inches. (at least that's what was on top of my car).
