Snowmageddon 2022 (5 Viewers)

I remember some pictures in a social studies book when I was a kid of people in Buffalo shoveling snow off their roof and of those nerdy bicycle flags attached to kids so that parents knew where they were if snow caved in on a shoveled path.

Sounds like that's what this will be like for some people. Seemed surreal as a kid and still does.

Wonder how long it will take to get shoveled out and for the snowplows to clear stuff? Or how many people will start losing power as the weight of the snow starts taking stuff down.

*knockonwood* Why haven't you lost power?

And just curious, what's your heating system and what's a typical winter bill? I live in a small rancher built in the 50's with minimal insulation in the ceiling and walls (I've since had had them both insulated but it's not the same as when first built) and I shudder to think of what my bills would be with my house covered by snow. Igloo effect maybe?

It's so crazy, I'm a few miles north of the storm and can still see my grass. Brought my daughter to school this morning and it was like a ghost town.

How was the night/morning for you poor bastards in the Buffalo area? Anyone make it to the hockey game?
Lots of booze and more snowblowing. Plow finally made it down my street but now I just have 8ft of snow piled up at the end of my driveway. I did trek out a few times during the night to make sure my furnace vent was still uncovered. I've got a pretty decent sized drift right near it so it is a bit of a concern.

Someone asked about power and thankfully there hasn't been many reports of outages. A bit surprising since there are still some leaves on trees.Would be rough if we lost it.

It has stopped snowing for now as the band has moved north and weakened but they are callng for another 2ft tonight when another band forms south of the city again.

HE Gas furnace. Newer house (2009). Bills aren't bad really - typically $150 or so in the worst of the winter.

Storm signal showing up for Thanksgiving for the Northeast. Long way out, but interesting. Could see record low temps tonight, then back up in the mid 60's for Monday. Then possibly slamming back down low enough for snow by the end of the week. Perfect weather for getting sick in.
Storm signal for Thanksgiving is still looking promising, although not sure how much cold air will be around to work with. Going very long range, the next really good storm signal is December 10th.

Ten miles north and east of us are an absolute disaster, just an inch here though.
I am in that 10 miles north and east... Buffalo is making the 14 inches of lake effect that fell 20-25 miles east of Cleveland last week look like child's play.

From what I hear, we've still only received a handful of inches of snow - in the city, slightly north of downtown, maybe 5-7 miles north of the heaviest snow band activity. My girlfriend went to work today as normal, she says there's like 40 people actually there out of the 1,000 or so who work there.

My flight from Baltimore to Buffalo (connecting flight from Vegas) was cancelled like 12 hours before takeoff yesterday. Normally not a problem...but I need to be in Chicago and was supposed to drive a few friends. All Southwest flights cancelled through end of day Wednesday (including girlfriend's flight to Chicago, which was supposed to be today). I just bailed and flew direct from Vegas to Chicago and crashed on someone's couch. My friends left last night, driving, but have to drive through Canada because I-90 is still closed for the 112 mile stretch from the PA border to Rochester.

My coworkers rented a car at the Baltimore airport and are attempting to drive, but don't know what they're gonna do when they hit Rochester and the highway is closed. What a ####### nightmare.

I suggest getting a garbage plate at Tahou's.

Just snowblowed the driveway for the 4th time today. Most snow I've ever seen in one day. And it's only 4:45pm
So, is this snow pretty much there until spring? Is that how it works in Buffalo?
It's supposed to be 50 on Sunday. Should be awesome when 6ft of snow melts.
What's worse. The 6 feet of snow, or the massive flooding that is going to ensure this weekend?Also... Are you out in west Seneca? I've gotten some crazy text pics from there and east Aurora

It looks like rain is in the forecast for that area early next week? That much weight on structures is going to be a nightmare situation. :(

The flooding is going to be a bigger issue. Always happens with these late autumn snow storms. Warm lake/cold air dumps massive amounts of snow, then temps go back up to the 50s. Massive melt off ensues. All the little creeks fill beyond capacity.

Yeah, I wasn't discounting the impact of the flooding. I was just saying that they also will have to deal with heavy, wet snow on rooftops prior to the flooding.

I'm in Lancaster. Apparently we're near the lead with 63" in the last 36 hours.

Curious...why didn't you fly from Vegas to Chicago to start with? Why fly Vegas - Buffalo just to drive to Chicago?
The Vegas thing was a relatively recent addition and our HR booked it all pretty much so I had very little say. I also kinda forgot it was this week. The car idea was half cost-related and half beer-related. I always like to drive to Chicago to cram my car full of Midwest beers. The drive isn't that bad, like 8-9 hours, and then I don't have to rent a car if I need one (which I will this weekend). Since my old college buddies and I are all in our former roommate's wedding, we wanted to make it a little road trip weekend.

The Bills are offering $10/hour and free tickets to the Jets game this Sunday to anyone who volunteers to shovel the stadium. I saw some pics on twitter...the snow is like halfway up to the crossbar on the goalposts. Insane.

AH!!! I see now. Makes sense. Hope you can have a good time this weekend.

They have 220,000 tons of snow to remove. And that's assuming no more snow tonight.
