They are doubt going to have to figure out cutting brush, killing fire lines, etc. also forcing some insurers to stay in the state

And doing more to force the utility companies to maintain their equipment (unless that has changed). I remember reading a few years ago that poorly maintained electrical lines/transformers/etc start a lot of fires in CA.
Here in the Bay Area PG&E is our only power option and they are a FOR PROFIT publicly traded company. They neglect the infrastructure to save money, Then when they are a responsible for a fire, they just raise the price on everyone to cover it.
PG&E has been the bane of many in the development industry's existence for quite some time. They do whatever the F they want and if you don't like it, too bad.

Damn Altadena is on fire. We went there for Christmas a few years ago, the coolest Christmas decorations I’ve ever seen. They had these old trees brought over from Italy back in the 1800s. Can’t replace those. Horrible.

Defense Department is sending these firefighting assets to the Palisades Fire

From CNN's Michael Conte
The Defense Department outlined the additional firefighting capabilities ordered by President Biden to assist with fighting the Palisades Fire in California.

Here’s what Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said:

  • The California National Guard is adding two modular air firefighting system units
  • The Nevada National Guard is also adding two modular air firefighting system units
  • Ten Navy helicopters with water delivery buckets to immediately assist with aerial suppression

The department has four additional modular air firefighting system units (MAFs) that “could be used if needed,” Singh added.

Biden has approved major disaster declaration for California, White House says

From CNN's DJ Judd
President Joe Biden has officially approved a major disaster declaration for California, the White House said Wednesday, unlocking federal resources for survivors affected by a spate of wildfires devastating the Los Angeles area.

“Today, President Biden has approved a Major Disaster declaration for California, allowing survivors to immediately access funds and resources to jumpstart their recovery,” the White House said in a fact sheet outlining the federal response to the wildfires. “Additionally, FEMA approved a Fire Management Assistance Grant to reimburse California for firefighting costs last night.”

Earlier Wednesday, Biden received a briefing from local first responders in Santa Monica, pledging, “We’re prepared to do anything and everything as long as it takes to contain these fires and help reconstruct, make sure we get to normal.”

“It’s going to be a hell of a long way, it’s going to take time, but the federal government is here to stay as long as you need it and everything you need,” he added.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom thanked Biden for the federal response during Wednesday’s briefing as well.

“This means the world to us, and just publicly, because I think this is important, the president happened to be in the region in town,” Newsom said.

or declare bankruptcy and get the state to help pay off creditors

CA utilities absolutely need to do a better job maintaining power transmission. Of course the problem is that costs a lot of money, and people already hate their utility bills. 🤷‍♂️

This sucks. My wife has family that lost their home in the Santa Rosa fires in Norcal a number of years ago. They were visiting relatives in LA and lost everything except for a couple of suitcases worth of clothes. Now the relatives they were visiting are under evacuation orders themselves. Seems likely their house is gone.

Crazy times and my heart goes out to anyone who is affected. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

5 people dead in Eaton Fire, LA County sheriff tells KABC

From CNN's Taylor Romine
Five people are dead as a result of the Eaton Fire, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna told CNN affiliate KABC Wednesday.

Officials said in a news conference earlier that two people had died.

CNN has reached out to the sheriff’s department for more information.

just got word someone i know lost her house in the Eaton fire. that area is old money so lots of history and memories lost up there, as are most of that Palisades area. such a sad way to start the year.

They'd have plenty of money for stuff like this and not have sky high utility costs if they didn't do the other zillion things that drive costs sky high. That's a discussion for another thread, though.

We lived there from '00 thru '08, several of them in Santa Monica, Mrs worked for Pepperdine-Malibu for a while, the drive up PCH was gorgeous

I echo what Bobby said, just heartbreaking to see these images
And it happened so fast
I was streaming the local SoCal news channels on YT this morning, the aerial shots of the Palisades made me numb

VERY :goodposting:

I used to think one side or the other of the Smokies (but still elevated) in eastern TN or western NC was about as good as one could get in order to achieve balance, but then Helene happened.

Many historians partially blame North America's chaotic climate/events for setbacks in technological and social advancements pre European colonization. Tough for civilizations to advance when they are dealing with prolonged droughts, earthquakes, volcanoes and other extreme weather/geological events.

Crazy people running california played a big part in this. Cut the fire dpt budgets down and diverted rivers to save some fish.
the blame game is surely going to be a big part of this...saw it already this morning on one of the major news networks.

I often think about how the Lakota (Sioux) people even survived in the Dakotas. It seems like their entire civilization should have been wiped out every few years, but they thrived for several centuries and posed a real challenge for a pre-industrial US, as recently as 150 year ago. It's wild.

The Hollywood hills fire is spreading quick. Got airdrops on it. Big initial evacuation area, sll the way down to Hollywood boulevard.

Seems like most of the states in the western half of the US are sending crews to assist. Thank you all for that.

New fire in Runyon Canyon, within a mile of Hollywood Blvd and near the Hollywood Bowl…ETA probably same as post from Gr00vus.

Right, they're calling it the sunset fire officially.

The helicopters seem to be doing a nice job of controlling this one.

Yeah, I just came across this on YT.

How does this get stopped?
winds have definitely calmed since this morning, so that will help. extra bodies coming in with the state of emergency will also help. the wind is not gone altogether, so will be still tough. four of the six fires show less than 10% contained.

aerial photo of Altadena

photos coming out of Palisades just as grim. hoping for better news tomorrow. I recognize much of the nation has faced difficulties in the past decade as I say this. It's crazy that a powerhouse such as Los Angeles has been facing so many challenges in a short amount of time, historically speaking, from covid to the entertainment strikes and now this. financially, economically, the city is facing quite an uphill battle. This will get politicized, we're probably in a heap of trouble for awhile.

He said you trade 4-5 months of **** winter for 4-5 months of Africa hot summer.
That's the thing, in our new world, it isn't 4-5 months of **** winter anymore. We had zero daytime highs below freezing in Dec 23 and one in all of Dec 21 / 19 / 18. The only times it happened in Dec 20 and 22 was when a giant front ripped through the whole country and like in places like SC it only lasted a couple days.

I'm not gonna blow smoke up anyone's *** about January and February. January always sucks. February can have a few hits, but it being shoulder season those hits often come with winter residue all over the ground, so it mostly sucks too. That's about it though. 60's and even some 70's linger into Nov then usually start to return by early March. And I don't know about you, but I'd much MUCH rather have my nice weather in summer v winter.

The times they are a changing...
I like having four seasons. That's why we're looking at places in the southwest with elevation, like Albuquerque/Santa Fe or Flagstaff, not Phoenix or Las Cruces. We would welcome upper-midwest winters if they were more like three months long instead of five or six.

I like the geographical diversity of the US, but one place where we really suffer relative to Europe is that we just seem to have incredible climate variation relative to them. It seems like every single place in the US either has brutal winters, hot and humid summers, hurricanes, wildfires, or something. You sort of have to decide what you're willing to live with and what's a deal-breaker.
Yep. As an insurance guy, the main thing we worry about in Europe is flooding. Very little else happens weather-wise that is exciting.

Just found out the place on the beach in Malibu where my wife and I went on one of our first dates (and many after) was burned to the ground last night. So much devastation.

The Reel Inn? A Malibu institution. Loved that place.

Yeah, Reel Inn was awesome. Our date place was Moonshadows. Hate using past tense for these.

Moonshadows. This is surreal. I have some great memories from that place. I saw the footage from all the waterfront homes on pch burning. I saw the footage from the plane leaving LA and that hill in Pacific Palisades. Just a raging inferno side to side top to bottom. I think I went into a kind of shock. I'm in some sort of denial. Now the Hollywood Hills. I have family there. I can't wrap my head around this.

It’s that bad or maybe worse. It’s hard to fathom. I grew up in them there hills. I can’t wrap my head around it yet.

No rain in forecast for remainder of 10 days and seemingly thru Jan. Red flag winds next week again. Will get worse before it gets better
