Man - this is brutal. Reporters are saying they’ve never seen a fire event with winds like this. Explosions of fires. 30K ordered to evacuate. Cars abandoned due to gridlock and bulldozers moving them around like tuna cans. Looks like the Paradise fire scene. Scary thing is these winds are supposed to continue for 2 more days.

Pacific Palisades is one the more desirable places to live on earth. Views of the Pacific. Close to all the action. Amazing how many fires have been happening near Malibu. It’s racing towards Santa Monica now. Stay safe So Cal FBG’s

We're looking at New Mexico for retirement, which has its own fire issues. I dunno.

Six months of winter gets a little old, but I don't really mind it. Blizzards are pretty if you're not trying to drive through them, and they're not dangerous at all otherwise. Maybe we should just stay put. That seems like an overreaction though. I dunno.

I've grown accustomed to fire season in Northern CA ending in November. We've gotten a little bit of rain but not much.

I read LA hasn't had measurable rain since May which is just crazy. It was once desert but Pacific Palisades is right on the water; you'd think they'd get some precipitation from somewhere with so much moist air around. Not a meteorologist though. :oldunsure:

We decided during covid we probably won't leave Cleveland. We enjoyed winter once there was minimal driving and we decided when to do it. This sucks right now, but it's because our life is 7-9 most weekdays with stuff going on all weekend- winter wears on you. There's an expiration date on that life though.

Scrolling through Twitter, some of these videos are like nothing I have seen. Massive out of control fires ripping through populated areas.

Santa Anas really kicking in too. No real way to stop it til the fuel is gone. Good luck, LA.

My daughter’s ex boyfriend’s family has an ENORMOUS house in pacific palisades. Like indoor full size bball court under the house big. Jaylen brown worked out there during Covid. Pretty sure it’s gone. Really sad.

A third fire is in the Sylmar area. Reports of no water to put out the fires. Why hasn’t the National Guard been deployed?

For anyone living in these affected areas, be safe.

Haven’t heard anything about no water. That would be weird. The NG might be activated tomorrow, but I don’t know what their fire fighting capabilities are.

Reporters drove down PCH and it looked like every home on the beach was on fire. Local landmarks gone. The Reel Inn among others. Many in our area here in Thousand Oaks are starting to lose power. Never seen or heard winds whip like this. They said 3 days ago that this would be a “life threatening wind event”. They weren’t kidding.

Ole Pete Demetrio was on the radio reporting on those beach front houses. Said he hasn’t seen the beach side of pch on fire in 35 years. He said a half mile was just gutted. :sadbanana:

This is where I heard it about the water issue - https://x.com/lakeshow_323/status/1876894189201314261?s=61&t=GOackElqs7DERhSylz1Pww

Anyway, praying for all of those affected. Been bouncing the LA channels all night.

No disrespect. And I’m happy that the city is on a big time upswing. But Pacific Palisades vs Cleveland? 1,000 times out of a 1,000.
I'm glad you enjoy it, but no thank you (notice the date)
Every location in the US has it's own pros and cons. But there is pretty much no set of circumstances where we would voluntarily retire to California or Florida. When actuaries tell me that they won't insure my home, that tells me everything I need to know. And things are not going to get better there.

what kills me about milwaukee is that when you wake up and go into work it is dark and when you get out and come home it is dark and then when you do finally get a weekend to be outside during the day it is overcast and cold it just wears on you and your mental well being take that to the bank brochacho

this is awful i wish the best to all impacted and their families tim i wish you and yours safety and good luck
Thanks I just spoke to them. They’re fine. But it will be a while before they can learn about their house. We saw on X that a home 4 houses up from theirs is on fire but i don’t know if that can be trusted.

I was in Milwaukee for the first time a couple weeks ago. Kept asking myself, "why would anyone want to live here?" That's not an indictment of the city itself, but the bitter, dreary cold.

I'm across the lake from you and agree. Last winter we had a stretch where the sun come out 1 time in a 28 day period.

so from may through october it is generally niceish outside and we have one festival after another and the people are nice and there is a lot to do between all of the lakes and trails and sports teams and festivals and good restaurants and a ton of booze if that is your thing and so on but man when it gets cold and dark from basically late november through march it is an endurance test for your soul and probably explains the massive binge and unhealthy drinking that goes on up here take that to the bank brohans

i mean as long as they are ok that is the big thing possessions can be replaced people cant so i am glad to hear your news

My FIL and his wife live in Sunset Mesa, just above the Getty Villas off Sunset. They were safely evacuated hours ago but now we’re all anxiously waiting to learn if their house is going to make it. We may not know for hours or days…
I was watching last night and it looked like the Getty Villa was surrounded by fire and a bunch of their fencing and surrounding brush was all on fire.

Our power is out this morning so I haven’t seen updates on the news yet. Have you heard if the Villa made it? That would be a massive loss. We were just there last month.

I read (via Alison Martino FB) they have tech to make it airtight and safe from fire.

Was just coming to check on this. Would be a huge loss if the Getty Villa was destroyed. I hope it makes it.

i cant find anything about an origin except that it started at 11 am in the santa monica mountains does anyone have any information on that

Driest start to a rain season on record here in SoCal.

Lived here basically my whole life and usually once we’re into Nov you stop worrying about fires. Something like this in January is nuts.
Same here in northern AZ. Where I am at, we usually have had about 6-12 inches of snow right now which is imperative to our water table. We have gotten maybe an inch.

Locals are very worried about the impact on fires this summer. Not good.

This was a major factor as to why I left Minnesota. Liked the people, like The Cities and the surprisingly diverse culture and things to do there, but only 3-4 months of "good" weather per year (and those months have rain, mosquitoes, etc.) just seemed nonsensical to me.

Have friends there. Evacuated. They left CA for TX but went back after pandy because of weather, jobs, etc. Looking at what's impacted they are probably wiped out.

Ours was even worse than that last year- we had one 'fair' day between 12/20/23 and 2/3/24. On a similar trajectory so far this year- sun went away about the same time, hasn't been back since, is making a cameo appearance tomorrow, then likely gone again until at least late in the month. I'm bailing early to maximize the vitamin d!

I look forward to the day when we can just leave SAD for a couple weeks this time of year, but control our destination (i.e. where there are not active wild fires). No one is climate change proof, but our probabilities are much MUCH better here vs the alternatives and just about everything we want is within an hour or so of our doorstep.

Good luck to any in the area, videos look brutal.

You know there are places that 1.) don't have fires and 2.) don't have blizzards in the 48 contiguous United States of God Bless America, right? Move from OH to SC was life changing.

We've got to figure out a solution to these wildfires in the West.

Why can't we have an anti-fair air armada that can handle high winds....do we not have the technology and/or funding?

Hearing a little about it now. Sounds like isolated water pressure/water pump issues in the worst possible spots. I just drove from NorCal last week, reservoirs and aquifers appeared full. Rick Caruso is a bitter dude. He just spent 104 million on a failed mayoral bid. And is probably losing another 100M in these fires if palisades village burned, which seems likely.

I typed a post up about this last night and then erased it as I ultimately didn’t wanna derail the thread. But since everybody else is talking about it…

As a SoCal native, my wife has talked to me about moving back to where she’s from, Minnesota, largely due to the fact her family’s there and the cost of living. The thing I can’t wrap my head around in thinking about it is life is hard enough when I don’t have to deal with Weather and the challenges of just existing in it. Shoveling your driveway, humidity in the summertime, bugs, cars you have to start 10 minutes before you get in them, 15 layers of clothes, etc., etc. etc. I just don’t want to add any of those stressors to my life. I’m happy to pay the sunshine tax to avoid all that.

From Huntington Beach here—about an hour away from the fires. Last night and this morning were brutal. The winds were constant and there were plenty of gusts that were strong enough to shake my house. I feel like it’s calmed down a bit over here—but we’re still getting some pretty strong gusts. Scary stuff.

70-120 mph winds last night. Just can’t fly in that.

so we can land rovers on Mars but can't figure out how to fly in 120 mph winds to fight fires? Seems crazy to me but that's the obvious explanation. I'm just wondering if we're doing everything we can do everytime I see one of these fires...every year it seems like clockwork.

Yup—it’s too dangerous. You mix that in with limited visibility from the smoke—and also how the strong wind would effectively make it hard to control where the water or fire retardant would land. Look at NASA and Space X—two entities that are known for their exceptional technology and intelligence—and they routinely postpone launches due to wind.
