So is Benson a go? (1 Viewer)

From NBC Sports:

Though some in the media believed that the league would resolve the appeal of running back Cedric Benson’s three-game suspension by now, the more accurate position always has been that this one will take some time.It will take some time because there are several moving parts. In addition to the appeal of the suspension under the personal conduct policy, Benson is pursuing a non-injury grievance under the CBA, based on the allegation that the league lacks jurisdiction to punish him for off-duty conduct occurring during the lockout.Benson also has filed an unfair labor practices charge with the National Labor Relations Board against his union, the NFL Players Association. Per a source with knowledge of the proceedings, Benson will be meeting today with the NLRB.It’s expected that the league will defer any ruling on the appeal of the suspension until these other proceedings have been resolved. So, in other words, Benson will likely continue to be practicing during the weeks and playing on Sundays.
Guess I'm dropping Scott.

I suppose this is not entirely unexpected, but for those of us holding Scott, there comes a point when that roster spot could be better utilized than waiting out this process. The problem is, Scott actually showed signs of life this week. I am curious why Scott was in on the touchdown run in the final two minutes of the game in a crucial situation with Cinci trailing. Benson's stats were dreadful, but you would think it would have been Benson, not Scott, in there in that situation. I did not see the game, so I am just looking at the stats. Does anyone have some insight on this?

good for Cedric. Yeah hes not exactly a role model but I think its utter BS that the NFL can suspend players for incidents that occurred during the lockout.

I follow the Bengals and am just as confused about why Scott was in the game for that situation. It is completely out of character for how the team runs its Red Zone offense. It's obviously one of two things. 1) It was just a onetime shift in philosophy to throw off the Jags (i.e. get the Jags thinking pass). 2) Cincy is changing philosophy and is going to put Scott into more situations like this. My personal opinion is #1. Benson has been their plow horse and I don't think that's going to change. They are committed to Benson. If it is #2 I'd be surprised but still would think Scott's inclusion into these situations would be minimal.Edit: Just read this from the local paper and thought I'd add.The one running play that was huge was third-and-goal at the Jaguars 2. With the Bengals in shotgun and Brian Leonard and Bernard Scott in the backfield, Gruden picked the perfect time to call a draw to Scott, who waltzed into the end zone for the go-ahead score.Said Gruden of the play: "They blitzed us and the free safety had a bad run fit and kind of got lost. We had a little cross kill going (Scott and Leonard crossed) and it was great job by Bernard finding a hole to get in there."After a couple weeks of saying he wanted to get Scott more involved, Lewis took control of the substitution pattern and made the calls on when he would play. In the 11 plays that Scott was on the playing field, he had season highs in carries (six) and yards (20)."When he gets into the game, he just has to relax," Lewis said. "He's so talented, and he wants to do good so bad he just has to relax and let things happen. He'll make the big plays."

Gimick formation. Scott and Leonard were both in beside Andy in the shotgun. Its a unique subpackage and that is usually where you find Scott/Leonard getting their reps.

The Bengals like to spread the field around the goal line so that is why they use that stuff mostly inside the 10. The week before the Bengals went shotgun empty and ran QB draw.

The NBC story just makes it sound like he may not be suspended for a while yet.

If anything, though, I may more aggressively pursue Scott. Imagine if that suspension comes down during the fantasy playoffs. Cincy has:

Week 14 - Hou

Week 15 - @STL

Week 16 - Ari

That could really be a game changer.

*checking to see if Goodell has Scott on his fantasy team...*

I still think we don't see a suspension. Benson is aggressively pursuing he's rights and I think he's going to beat the rap.

The whole thing reeks of backpedaling to me. The league doesn't want to eat crow so they won't enforce the suspension until the other stuff is dealt with first. My guess is Benson's lawyer(s) play the delay card for a bit and ride it out. My completely unprofessional opinion is that Benson has a good chance to win his case / grievance anyway.

ProFootballTalk.com reports Cedric Benson's appeal of his one-game suspension has been rejected, and he will sit out as expected on Sunday.

Already reduced from three games to one, the odds were long Benson's suspension would get thrown out. He'll be allowed to rejoin the Bengals on Monday. Bernard Scott is getting the start in his place against the Seahawks' stout run defense Sunday. Benson will return against the Titans' bottom-10 run defense in Week 9.

Brian Leonard a sneaky play for desperate owners having bye week or injury issues?

I dunno, it'd have to be a seriously deep league to start Leonard. Peerman's liable to get some carries too so Leonard may not do too much. Leonard did close out one of their games on the last drive as ball-security dude but anything beyond a fluky goal-line carry or a 20-yard screen when he does a Leonard leap for a score is asking a lot - and even those plays happening today are doubtful.-QG
