Soapless in Cincinnati (1 Viewer)

Oh, so I got my Japanese Magic Sponge Blanket today... I was actually already in the shower when I realized (PRAYED) it might've come...so I jumped out, ran downstairs all wet, to find my Amazon package outside the front door, finally.

That was the first scrub I've had in a week. I didn't think it was all that great, it only felt good in a few places. In fact, on my face and other more sensitive areas, it didn't feel so good. I guess just knowing it was doing the job was enough. Maybe I'll get used to it, but soap sure felt better. I don't get why it was so strongly recommended in here.

Also, does the no-soap strategy also mean you don't use ANY moisturizers? I usually just use soap to shave (in the shower), but the other day I used shaving cream and then after-shave stuff. Only time this last week, but still. Am I supposed to just shave in the shower, without anything?

Day 8 with no soap. Starting to get used to this. And I really don't think I smell. Using my magic Japanese cloth now, but don't really know what the big deal is. It's 60% nylon and 40% polyester, feels like a brillo pad.

Maurile, you say it takes 2 weeks to get used to the no-shampoo thing. But then you let the gal shampoo you once a month when you get your haircut. So, you spend half the month getting your hair adjusting to its own oils and stuff...only to start all over again just weeks later. Doesn't really make sense to me.

The Japanese cloth removes dead skin and stuff. It's like a loofah sponge, except that it's lighter, more flexible, more durable, and more resistant to mold.

I don't think I'm starting all over when I get a single shampoo. I think there's a big difference between shampooing every day and constantly washing out all the natural oils (thus making my scalp work to constantly replenish them), and doing it just once every so often so that it's not constant and doesn't put my scalp's oil-production into overdrive.I should also mention that, about once a month, I "shampoo" with an egg yolk and then use a vinegar solution (about a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in an 8 oz glass of water) as a conditioner (which I wash out, but some people leave in). I like the way that turns out. I'd do it more often if eggs were cheaper, and if I didn't forget all the time.

I would just do what you feel like here. Whatever's easiest and feels best.(I've been shaving in the shower with no soap/cream for over 20 years — just as a matter of convenience. I don't think there's anything wrong with shaving soap/cream; I just think it's easier to shave without it.)

FWIW I shave with coconut oil.

I'll stick with regular shampoo, thank you.

Reading this thread has me contemplating giving this a shot. I am assuming that the few of you here not shampooing are not using product in your hair?

Tried this for a day. My pits smelled so bad when I took my shirt off after work that I'm back to using soap and smelling good.

Egg yolk in in your hair and not washing it out??? WTF? Boneheads.

Everybody washes egg yolk out, as far as I know. It's the diluted vinegar that some people leave in.

I ordered the fancy Japanese scrubber and will commence without informing the wife just as a test. Will report back.

I've never worn deodorant. I just don't seem to have smelly sweat. Nobody has ever mentioned a smell, including the ladies. When it has come up in conversation, people have smelled me to prove how wrong I am, only to end up agreeing that I don't stink. I do have a smelly ###, but deodorant isn't going to help that.

I already don't use soap in the shower, I just use the shampoo suds. I guess I use soap on a loofah if I get muddy from soccer or mountain biking, but that's probably about five times per year.

I might try dropping the shampoo for awhile just to see if I prefer it, but there's no way I'm going to stop washing my hands with soap after using the restroom.

So you are blaming no-soap for your pits smelling? Isn't that a anti-perspirant/deodorant thing? No-soap doesn't mean no-scrub.

I stopped using anti-perspirant years ago because I read this thing about the aluminum (?) or some #### in it being linked to Alzheimers. :lmao: I was super baked but what stuck with me was that the bottom line was that it wasn't natural to stop your body from doing something it needs to do. And what it's always done. So at first it felt like I was sweating more, but probly because I was so cognizant of it. Once I forgot about that, I was fine. Maybe that was my body adjusting but whatever it was, I've been fine ever since. I'll use deodorant if I think I'm going to sweat, but not anti-perspirant.

Being soapless seems to be working out ok after a couple of days but I don't see how any of you are doing it without deodorant. I tried it for a day and couldn't handle it, and I'm not even a big sweater.

I went no soap & deodorant. There are days when I forget to put deodorant on after a shower and at the end of the work day I smell fine. Not so much when you shower without soap.

I'm going on a month now without soap and I'm fine with it. I really don't notice a huge difference either way, especially once you are used to it. I think my skin isn't as dry. I was starting to use moisturizers on my face before this -- due to dryness and kind of a flaky forehead of late -- but no more. It's not part of the program, using that stuff, right? All I use is deodorant, without anti-perspirant.

I don't even use my magic Japanese carpet every time I shower. Which, btw, feels GREAT in the junkyard. I get a little over-zealous there, and find myself going back a lot.

Gonna try the no-shampoo thing eventually, but I'm not real confident about that one.

This is true for me too. I am however using shampoo on my hair once a week or so. I can't outlast the greasy period.

I tried going no deodorant for a couple weeks. I stopped when the weather warmed up a bit and I started smelling like a junior high locker room after gym class.

I've been at no soap for almost two months and can't find a reason to return. Sold.

I use deodorant but not antiperspirant and have been for like 10 years so nothing new there. I don't know why you wouldn't at least use deodorant.

However, I did decide to try the no shampoo thing again and I've made it through the greasy days. I'm around day 6 now and sure enough, hair is not greasy anymore and definitely thicker or whatever.

And like Norville, no shaving cream, no moisturizer, no product, although I more often than not, did this before. Dry shave in shower works fine for me, but I'm not very hairy.

:excited:

No shampoo for a month now. Hair is thicker-looking. If you have thin hair and use gel, you should try this instead. Not a gel guy to begin with so a few people have thought I was now using it.

So no-soap is still dope. Japanese rag does the trick. And I don't even use it every time.

I like the feeling of being all cleaned up when you get out of the shower and figured that would be the thing which would stop this experiment, but no. You still feel refreshed or whatever when you get out of the shower. Just takes a little getting used to...

I have really thick hair. It gets very curly and fro-ish if it gets longer than 1" to 1 1/2". I don't need thicker, I need thinner and straighter. Is no shampoo still an option?

No clue, but I was actually just thinking about this after what I wrote. :lmao: Ask Mo or chaka khan.

My hair is pretty thick and it would say that it is actually more manageable without shampoo. Shampooing it makes it fluffy for me (which I would counter with product) but the natural oil in my hair takes care of it now.

What's conditioner supposed to do, anyway? All it seems to do for me is make my hair frizzy, which isn't what I'm going for... so I've never really used it except to try.

Well, I caved and shampooed my hair tonight. Three times. I made it almost two months...but ran into some issues of late. I'm around the beach and saltwater a lot and lately I'd been finding dirt/sand in my fingernails when I itch my scalp. I know. :bag:

Still soapless for the most part, yes, no problem there. Occasionally I'll cave and do a heavy spring cleaning with the soap. However with my hair longer than it was, I started using soap or shampoo or whatever's in there. What got to me was seeing dirt under my fingernails now and then. It seems harder to stay away from that with longer hair. However, it could also be that it's (the dirt) coming from my skin, in which case I need to use that Japanese sponge thing more frequently and/or vigorously. Which is the other problem...I always forget to travel with the sponge and so I don't use it nearly enough.

So yeah, not shampooing -- especially short hair -- is the way to go, imo Funny, but I saw this former beauty queen asked about her secret to such beautiful hair, blah, blah, blah. She said she never shampooed more than once a week. She was serious, too. I cracked up. It definitely works and more people should try it. It's just that 2nd or 3rd day you gotta get through, ha!

Update?

I still can't tell which of you were trolling and which were serious. Brong? Maurile? You guys still doing this?
I wasn't trolling, but I'm back to using soap. The no-soap strategy worked fine for the most part, but you have to stick with it. If you use soap just once in a while, or about half the time, you'll stink. It has to be always or never. And never isn't reliable enough for all occasions. So I'm back to always for now, but am open to revisiting never sometime again in the future.

I still don't use shampoo (but do sometimes use an egg yolk or honey or clay, with vinegar as conditioner).

So, I keep my hair short and its fine/thin straight hair. Occasionally I get dandruff. Should I switch to no shampoo? If I do, do I have to stop using hair products (pretty much necessary as my hair just goes straight up if I don't put something in it).
