Solo: A Star Wars Movie (1 Viewer)

My first impression of this movie was that it was never dangerous. But there was nothing wrong with it honestly, it was a ton of fun to see them complete the Kessel Run, etc.

Not sure what Marvel did differently to convince me of the stakes of Infinity War. Maybe just be a magnitudes better film.
We already know what happens well into the future of the characters we care about in this movie, so the same level of uncertainty just isn't there. It was still a hell of fun ride though.

I will likely take a long lunch in the next few weeks and run down to the theater by where I work to check it out.  I'm probably the only one on this board with a Star Wars tattoo so I suppose I need to see this before it hits DVD.
Chewbacca tramp stamp?

I was entertained, but not overly impressed like I was with rogue one.

Was it me or were they setting this up for more of these movies moving forward?

My theater last night (nice theater, downtown kc, 8 dollar tickets) had 15 people in it.  Theater holds 200

Have to see it again....but as of right now, I'm thinking that all of the great/good parts (Glover, Ehrenrich, Solo-Chewbacca meeting, Woody, all the Easter Eggs and ties to the OT/Rogue One) fall short in making it a great movie.  Thought it dragged a bit in the middle, Bettany was forgetable as a villain and the stakes just didn't feel high enough, nor did the resolutions to the different character relationships feel important.

Definitely worth seeing again....and maybe it was just a bit of Infinity War fatigue.....but the Star Wars Universe feels pretty bland/low stakes these days.

Fun movie; will watch it again when it comes out later this year.  But I agree on Star Wars - main movies are just not grabbing me.  I enjoyed TFA, but TLJ was just okay.  I watched it once in the theaters and haven’t even thought about watching it again.  No interest at all.  I’ll go to episode 9 just to see how it ends. By contrast I’ve seen Infinity War 3 times already.

Thought it was great although my expectations were lowered prior to seeing it.

Not too much of a Star Ward nerd, but I am wondering if Kira and the rebel leader are part of the current canon.

Qi'ra and Enfyst Nest are part of the canon now but this was their first appearance in any form of media.

Enfyst will be in an upcoming comic book.  Qi-ra will be showing up in some youth novels and an animated short series.

I agree. With Avengers and Dead Pool on either side (originally Dead Pool was to come out next weekend and probably should have if the numbers remain low). There's also Incredibles 2 and another Jurassic movie right behind it. Would much rather see it on the first day of Christmas break with the kids like Episode VIII
Dead Pool can't compete in ticket sales totals with 'regular' movies because it is Rated R.

I have tried with new bit-time movies to avoid threads like this and most articles/reviews to remain as 'in-the-dark' about them. It worked with Avengers: IW because I was unaware of a second movie, so the end caught me off guard.

I was pleasantly surprised with this one, review is similar to most: good, not perfect, and not best of series. Ending left me wanting a sequel, or some sort of tie-in to rest of series.

how is the mother of dragons?
I am only a GOT Newbie (almost done with S2 - watching them weekly with GOT-Nerd wife as a way to stretch until new season) but I didn't realize it was her, must have been the hair. She has said one of great things about GOT fame is she doesn't get recognize her because she doesn't walk around with white hair.

Yes, much like Vader survives Mustafar due to the dark side, so does Maul.  He ends up on a junk planet, makes himself spider legs and loses his mind. His brother finds him and takes him back to dathomir where his witch mother brings his mind back.  He and his brother team up and take over the crime syndicates to build an “army” to take revenge on Sidious.   He also wants to kill Kenobi.  Sidious kicks everyone’s ### and the cards tumble down.  I believe we are now several years past these events.
I had to have this explained to me by my 15 y.o. Sci-Fi Nerd son. Recognized Cameo, thought he was dead, just didn't know his story between Ep1 and Solo.

Apropos of nothing, Friday’s “word of the day” on Words With Friends” was “solo”.

Get a grip guys, I don’t think comparing a Han Solo movie to Infinity war is quite fair.  Infinity war is the culmination of ten years of movies.  Solo is a one-off movie.

There are countless duds in the marvel universe.

This is a fun summer flick not the biggest movie of the franchise.

In the old days, we never would have known about the problems in the making of the movie or would have had monstrously irresponsible article that spread like wild fire about possible acting issues of the lead.

I think a lot this really tainted the build up to this movie and likely effected both the initial reviews and initial box office.

It is great to see that it appears the majority of the people who have seen the movie have enjoyed it and that it was not even close to the disaster that the media build up led many to believe.

I follow IMDB ratings very closely.  For most movies and almost all genre movies, it is almost never seen that an IMDB rating goes up as more votes come in but that is exactly what has happened with Solo.  Just a few days ago, the movie was at a 5.8 which indicates a below average movie, but the ratings have steadily climbed all weekend, now up to a solid 7.2 which I think better shows its real standing now that people have really seen the movie.

I don't know if the improved word of mouth can overcome the issues at the box office, especially with the summer competition but this movie should continue to make movie studios run their productions in as much secret as possible.

Spot on.

I didn't even know this was out.  Ads came on during warriors/rockets game last night, my kids yawned.

Would have expected more fanfare... probably won see it until it hits hbo or something.

I’ll go see it tomorrow. Wierd  that it’s not getting bigger numbers considering everything I’m reading is positive

word of mouth rarely effects week 1 numbers for a movie with significant negative press coming in.  The good word of mouth may help reduce the drop in week two though.

I still can't believe this is ever a question.  Unless specifically shot for 3D (very rare) , the answer is always NO.
Heh. Uh, sorry?

For anyone else with a similar question, it is not worth 3-D. AND, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT TYPE IT OUT!!!

Here is my newly revised tier list.  I am trying to use a non youth biased view point.  The tiers are not to indicate I like the movies exactly the same but more to place them with other movies in the series of similar quality from my perspective.

Top Tier: Empire Strikes Back, Rogue 1

It is probably not a coincidence that these were the two darkest movies and the two least concerned with commercial tie ins and pandering to pre teens.

Second Tier: A New Hope, The Force Awakens

Two very similar movies in tone and texture.  A couple of flaws but nothing that should detract from their overall quality

Third Tier: Return of the Jedi, The Revenge of the Sith, The Last Jedi, Solo

Plenty of flaws in all of these but so many strong items that they can still be viewed multiple times with enjoyment for those of us who can tolerate flaws

Fourth Tier: Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones

Not much more can be said that has not already been said.  But the fight between Maul, Obi and Qui Gon is still the best in the entire 10 movies IMO.

I can see you don't place a high value on the use of musical score, color, or fantastic settings, all of which push Phantom Menace much higher on my list.

I enjoyed all of those as well but my eye always goes towards writing first.  Story and dialogue are the foundations of movie and tv for me.

Mozart, Rembrandt and David Lean couldn't make up for that horror show.

Episode 3.1 Turn to the Dark Side (a popular fan re-edit of the second trilogy) got it right, the only part they included from Phantom Menace was the fight with Darth Maul.

Disappointing box office.   Definitely fan fatigue at play here.
Yeah, might also be due to the negative commentary swirling around it but the huge dropoff for Deadpool 2 as well suggests people are having a bit of big blockbuster movie fatigue. Or they just blew their movie budget for the year seeing Infinity War over and over and over.

Prequel re-edit without the pod race? Unpossible!

No pod race, no Count PooPoo, no General Robot Emphysema.  It's not great; because they truly make it the story of Anakin turning to the dark side so you have to suffer through Hayden Christiansen a lot but it's a better story on many levels.

To pile on.. just left a pizza party for 2 basketball teams (lots of older and younger brothers playing together).

19 kids.  Nobody had seen it.  Some thought it came out later this summer.

They screwed something up on their marketing.

The sad thing is I think they've screwed Infinity War in the process.

I checked out IW seats and theaters are empty.

That said, I got a single ticket for 7:15 tonight and managed to snag the lone seat in the middle of the theater left open in XD.  Looks like it's going to be packed.

Watched last night - good but not great.  They completely stay away from all the force stuff which was good and bad.  It was a decent movie but didn’t seem like hardcore SW.  The lead wasn’t bad at all - the story was just ok but he did pretty good.

Kid and I enjoyed it. Would watch again.  Second tier in the star wars catalogue.

DM appearance at the end was awesome. Chick was super hot (and a scheister!). Glover was great

Kid and I thought Han looked like tom brady at times.

Really enjoyed this. Not as good as Rogue One. Loved how Han and Chewey meet. Donald Glover was awesome. The lead was very good at picking up some of Harrison Ford's mannerisms.

Thandie Newton needed more screen time.

And who was the chick at the end that took her mask off.....i feel like that character is important.

IW is already the 4th highest of all and 3rd and 2nd are with in shouting distance.  IW could easily end up #3 or even #2 all time when their run finishes.

Better the second time around. Also theater was packed and applause at the end (like on Friday night).

The story is good, the acting is good, hits all the right notes. Not sure where I put it in the list but in terms of developing a new EU, this is a solid contribution imo. Lots of little lines will continue to pop up. For example, Lando says something about mining colonies being a dirty business and Beckett says that's where the money is. Iirc, in prior cannon doesn't Lando make good money by running a mining colony that walked (the whole colony) around the light side of a revolving moon or planet?

Went today, enjoyed it. Some of the humor seemed to fall flat, not much response from the audience. Dragged a bit at times, middle of the pack for SW movies.

One thing, the first card game for the ship, didn't seem necessary since they lost and still got the ship anyway. Lando won but then never really mentioned it again. I know it's a plot device for the second card game but seemed like a big hole there.

Lando feeling some kind of way when his robot lost it’s power was a little weird. NTTAWWT.

Idk, there's something kinda poetic about a guy that charismatic, who only cares about self-preservation, having a reluctant robot best friend--a seemingly safe, reliable choice for a self-interested rogue. Then she dies because she cared about something more than herself, which Lando doesn't understand (yet).

His second-in-command on Bespin in ESB is part droid/android as well if I remember correctly.

Oh, and... :nerd:

Went tonight.

Not awful but almost instantly forgettable.

I've sat here for about 5 minutes thinking of something either positive OR negative to say about it and I've got nothing.
