Solo: A Star Wars Movie (1 Viewer)

Might be a revealing dynamic taking shape here.

I really enjoyed Solo, and am super pumped about a Boba Fett movie.

FWIW I was a dyed in the wool SW fan as a kid.  ANH came out when I was 6, so SW was pretty much the backdrop for my childhood.  I think others on the other side of this discussion also grew up with SW though, so I'm not sure what to make of this.

Not sure. I wouldn't say I was a hard core fan as a kid. Born in '79 so missed them in the theater, etc. I know for sure that my daughter will say "who?" when I tell her what the next stand alone movie is about. I think the Boba Fett fascination was really just hard core fans in that certain generation.

Oh, definitely understand that.  Sure, he only got 3 lines.  But the dude captured Han Solo, had the most interesting costume and weaponry, and those of us who were playing with figures when Empire came out played with him for hours on end.  So he ended up with this mythos about him - kind of like Morgan in the first few seasons of TWD.  I used to call him the Boba Fett of TWD, in fact.  Just an image that far overshadowed the screen-time.  Something anticipatory.

That said, I don't think that's all of it.  I actually liked the Solo movie.  I mean, really liked it.  Like, my first reaction was that this was the best SW movie since Empire - or at least, the least flawed.  But I see these movies through kid eyes. I watched Jenny Nicholson's critique, and I have to admit that she's totally on point.  But I don't care.  This movie was a blast.  It's just too bad they didn't do it when Harrison Ford was young enough to play Han.

I've seen articles quoting an estimated $250M production budget and an estimated $150 in marketing for Solo, but you never really know for sure, studios hide and obfuscate those numbers as much as possible. Most production companies get about 60% of the take on theater sales according to an earlier article posted but Disney gets a slightly larger cut because of their muscle, plus they make up a lot of that on toy sales and other merchandise. Merchandising has always been the real Star Wars money maker, so much so it was even made fun of in Space Balls.

Im kind of with you. I would rate it in my top 3. Prob Empire, ANH and Solo. Followed by Episode 3 and 7.

Very recently (either yesterday or the day before) Simon Peg said that Rian Johnson made changes from what JJ originally intended.  There is now a theory/hope that JJ may retcon some of what Johnson did in 8 during 9 but that is all speculation and it will be a long time until we find out (Dec 2019)

Just totally insane for Disney to allow this to happen.  Say what you will about George Lucas but he had a timeline.  You absolutely cannot hire directors to write their own script for the second movie trilogy.  

Disney needs a team of writers to write the main stories and hire directors to direct the movies.

 
I’m a huge Star Wars fan and have zero desire for a Boba Fett movie.  I’d still be there opening night tho.

I love technology as much as the other guy. But in moderation. Just like TV for us Gen X'ers. TV was the baby sitter with baby boomers as well as Gen X. But it was in moderation. I see kids who simply can not be peeled away from their phone or tablet. I see families of 4 and 5 at restaurants eating dinner in complete silence and heads down looking at their phones from the moment they sit....till the moment they leave.

Grumpy old man. Please man.

Back on topic......SOLO WAS AN AWESOME STAR WARS FILM!!!! I already want to see it again and again. Did not say the same thing about The Last Jedi which is dreck compared to TFA, R1, and Solo. So Disney in my book is 3/4 so far.

Not really looking for an argument here, but I said you "sound" like a grumpy old man.  You're changing your point as well.  You said no more imagination and too much device time.  I was mainly countering that and agreeing that kids need other activities as well.  The sky is not falling.

 
Can't wait till they do the origin movie about the clarinet player from the band at the Cantina on Tatooine.

Rather than a”Solo” movie and a “Fett” movie they need to make “The Smuggler Chronicles” and have movies that feature Han, Greedo, Boba Fett, Jabba, Lando and whoever else all sharing bits and pieces of roles where they can ebb and flow different storylines where some characters have bigger parts in some movies and lesser or none in others.

@KathleenKennedy, this #### isnt complicated.

 
With that said I am in the minority and love Boba Fett and think a stand alone movie could be awesome, but the issue is what is brought up above. For the casual fan you need to explain who he is which then takes half your movie. If he is layered into a larger story he can grow within it and have a more prominent role. 

Like if they wanted to introduce a Boba Fett movie, I don’t know maybe make him be the one trying to steal the score from Woody Harrelson working on behalf of Jabba. Boom, introduced as a villain in “Solo” and now can expand.

That is one thing they can learn from Marvel, so I don’t know walk down the hall at Disney HQ and ask them their advice for tying in 100 characters in a universe seemlessly as they seem to be doing an ok job of it.

 
Instead of picking the bones of lesser light characters, why not put the universe back in Star Wars universe and maybe go in some new directions 

you won’t antagonize legacy fans who are apt to be harder to please

its harder to F up something that’s a new storyline, last Jedi most of all because of them not knowing how to handle luke

Agree with you and It's not horrible....but it is discouraging.

First of all, it's good for them to know that just because it says Star Wars on it, doesn't mean it will sell.  That's huge.  

Second, the "unknown actor" thing works for trilogy movies.  But I think it will be a huge failure if they try to keep it going for all the spinoff movies.  At times, you need some actors with name recognition.  No one is saying that they need to hire Tom Cruise, but SOME star appeal needs to happen.

Third, I love the fact that the movie is really good.  Who cares if it's a box office bomb.  That's really not relevant.  Nor does it mean that a second movie won't happen.   If my research is right, Antman was the lowest grossing movie of all the Marvel movies (Solo will soar past it imo).  Yet I loved Antman and a sequel is coming.  

All in all, the good news is that Star Wars/Disney didn't actually DELIVER a bomb.  The movie just didn't perform well at the box office.  That can be fixed.  It's on Disney to up their game.  In all aspects of life I think we tend to get lazy when things are going well and big corporations are no different.  Fire a few marketing folks and move on.

I really like the fact that there is now a 1.5 year break between movies.  Star Wars needed that.

They are.

Two completely new trilogies, not Skywalker based, are in the early stages of development.  One of them is being developed by the Game of Thrones guys (Benioff and Wiess).

That being said, considering how enjoyable both Rogue 1 and Solo were, I hope they also keep looking into anthology films as well.

I was never a Star Trek guy but in retrospect its amazing how they were able to push out their worlds.

the non episode trilogies week ambitious as this stage... focus on a good story and if a trilogy is demanded the  you deliver 

 
solo may be great (haven't seen it)  but its gettting murdered in the box office and will go down as the first Star Wars flop that loses money.

you should read the thread if you have some time.  You will find there are plenty of other well thought out reasons why this has struggled at the box office.

It also doesn't tie into the larger story in any meaningful way.

These standalone movies should be current/future characters - Kylo, Rey, Finn, Poe.  And they should progress the larger universe in some minor/major way ala Marvel standalones.  

Seems obvious.. someone dropped the ball big time.  :shrug:

The new trilogy just isn’t that exciting.  I wouldn’t go see a stand-alone movie about those characters.  

Boba Fett in The Clone Wars was an annoying whiner IMO.  

 
There's plenty to nitpick on the new movies but I just go and enjoy the nostalgia. I've liked all of them to varying degrees in different ways. Happy they are being made again.

It's technically a Kloo Horn....and it's Figrin Dan and the Modal Nodes.

I'm thinking a "Spinal Tap" mockumentary might be a nice direction that Star Wars could take this in.  

 
The Star Wars franchise really needs to get a secondary outlet away from the Skywalkers/Galactic War period we all know.  A Boba Fett or Obi Wan movie will make money......but I don't think they do anything to expand the Universe.  

I liked Last Jedi and the new cast; Poe, Rey, Ren and Finn.......but I don't think they've resonated that much with the nerd base that felt Disney raped their childhood in TLJ.

####### nerds...what did you want...Luke chopping everything under the sun down with his lightsaber in one hand and his #### in another?

Is that counting Obi-Wan/Boba Fett and the Otis/Figrin Dan joint project?

Obviously they're going to beat this thing like a red-headed step child.......but I don't think the franchise is immune from taking hits to its viability.  I'd have thought that the DC Universe was in great shape after the Bale Batman......but look where we are with that.

3 from the Last Jedi director and 3 from the game of thrones guys. Completed unrelated to any characters we’ve heard of, or so they’ve said. 

Also there is supposedly a Fett film and Obi-Wan film in the works.

That would have been much better than Luke taping his #### to his taint and hiding like a little #####. Just such a stupid arc for Luke.  I'm not spending money or time on the triology any more. Solo I will see for rent.

He's an old man.  He ain't winning that fight.  Hell, it was the same with Obi-Wan and Vader in A New Hope.  Luke gives himself up to give the Future a chance.

I didn't hear one person object to Han dying.  They had to get one of two things if they were bringing the old timers back:

1. luke han and Leia together yukking it up

2. Luke being Luke for a damn movie

Its not that hard, and it wasn't the nerds decision to put these characters back into play.  But to put them in the movie and change everything they loved while at the same time using his image to sell the movie, these guys can go #### in their hat

No he ran away and for no reason at all. If he stayed around the future might  not have needed to be saved.  There was no empire in power, nothing  to guard on that island, just a ##### with hurt feelings.

I don't think people actually mind him dying, I minded his death in the finality it presents in that we will never get this mess sorted.  You had a good swath of Han in the Force Awakens, passed the torch even.  Luke milked a muppet while offering no real reason for his 

1. hiding

2. living a few bread crumbs with R2 where to find him

Its clear a framework was laid with Force Awakens and people were ok with Han dying with the Luke carrot.  

And then ... a mess.

You can say F Nerds but Nerds built their house.

 
And as displayed in the "fight" he still got "it".  Unless astral projection self has more skills than real person?  Just super ####### dumb.

He gave his reasons.....with I'm sure said reasons tying all the way back into Empire Strikes Back when he goes into the cave on Dagobah.  He's conflicted and he knows it.  He knows how easy it is to succumb to the Dark Side and he choses to take himself out of a potential situation that would have him turn.  He knows he isn't a noble hero.  

ETA:  Taking all the "nerd rage" schtick out of it...I REALLY don't understand how people don't see Luke's journey in TLJ (aside from milking muppets and maybe the "saber flip") as being the most consistent with the character and what he has been taught. I'm 43....I grew up with Luke.  It seems like a very mature and satisfying resolution to the character. 

ETA: And the only person I have any remote disdan for is Lucas....who (IMO) squandered pretty much Mark Hamills entire potential "### Kicking " Luke career.

I could give a rats ### what the critics think about Solo, or about how much money it made. 

Fact is.....I will buy the Blue Ray, and will enjoy this movie again and again and again like all the other Star Wars films I love. They made a really cool Star Wars movie and it is a shame all these idiots were ripping a movie before it was even out. I mean that is the most insane thing ever. Bad buzz and bad press from insane people about a freaking popcorn flick. It’s a freaking movie. Not some life saving medicine. LOL.

It was great. I already want to see it again in the theater! Such a relief after the huge let down The Last Jedi was. 

So far the “A Star Wars Story” flicks (R1 and Solo) have been home runs for me. 

Keep em coming.

Believe it when I see it chief.  The likely scenario you'll see play out is Kennedy steps aside which clears the way for a new regime to quietly broom Johnson out of there.  

You're putting a lot faith in a regime that has displaced 5 directors in 2 years plus.  

Tell me more about how this isn't a bomb.
