SP Mock Invitational--5th round? Uh huh....5th round...... (1 Viewer)

The Philadelphia Eagles select: Jordan Howard, RB, Indiana.
As an Eagles homer I don't like him over the value at OG on the board at the pick. I'd have jumped at the chance to pick a long term OG to protect the future of the franchise over an often injured, upright running, 1 speed RB. Even his YouTube highlight vid is uninspiring.

Well, hopefully, they are who I think they are!!!
I'm only partly kidding when I say this seemed to be the methodology or tie breaker for Denny. If the guy was from THE Ohio State that was the player they wanted. Started with Robert Smith I think and at one point the Vikings were TOSU west.

Been patiently waiting and following this thread since it started waiting for our pick and today am at a conference so didn't have time to look into it enough for this pick. Wanted an OT but nothing inspiring was left. Didn't love the value at OG and wanted a future RB. I think he can 1/2 with Mathews and take over next year. Had I been able to look back on the picks I likely would have tried to trade back and pick a rb in the 4th.

Howard runs really hard. That is why I compared him to Asiata. I do think he is perhaps faster than Asiata and maybe in some other ways a better player as well, but that is his main strength is running hard and getting yards after contact. It is this type of running style that also leads to him getting hurt more often than RB whose strengths help them avoid those big hits. That is not Howards style at all.

Texans select Nick Varret TE Ohio State

Style wise not much different than the dudes they have now, hopefully just better.

The need for a future RB isn't questioned and your assessment of the lack of remaining value at OT seems to be accurate...However there was value at OG. If your play was exclusively on an RB I agree with your assessment on a trade back.

Ya I honestly was expecting there to be more there at OT but he sent me the list and didn't have time to seek out a trade back. But yes in reality if no OT drops to there then would like us to trade back to the bottom of the 3rd and pick up the 4th and go ot/og + rb with those two picks.

Chargers draft so far:

The Chargers gave up 2005/17/4.8 on the ground last season, while recording 32 sacks. In 2014, they gave up 1986/11/4.5 on the ground, with just 26 sacks. In 2013, it was 1725/14/4.6 on the ground and 34 sacks. That is your Mike McCoy and Tom Telesco era of run defense and pass rush. This draft, along with the signing of Brandon Mebane, puts an end to that.

In the big picture, the Chargers have a lot of issues. One of the biggest is run defense and overall DL play. Problem solved.

They still need plenty of other help: #1 need is center, but they could use OL help in general; only Jeff Cumberland behind 36 year old Gates; no ILB depth; no FB on roster (and Gordon needs one). I'm pretty confident all of that can be addressed to some degree in rounds 4-7, but it is still a tall order to address everything, so I decided to go all out to completely solve an area of need.

If C Kelly had made it to the Chargers' second round pick, I would have taken him. This is one reason why I hope Telesco trades down... I hope he can move down to pick up another second rounder, then use the extra pick to move back up (if necessary) for Kelly or to take Martin, and not feel as bad for reaching thanks to the extra pick.

Looking to trade up. Given we are only going 5 rounds deep, I can only offer 102 and 175. Please let me know if anyone is interested.

I'm the third pick from now and I have 3 guys I like and I can't decide between them.  Anyone interested in trading up to 89 for Hack-Attack or The Cookiemonster? Don't want to move down past 94.

3.24 The Cincinnati Bengals select Connor McGovern, OG, Missouri

Without much depth on the interior OL, McGovern will fit in nicely with last year's picks of Ogbuehi and Fisher securing the future of the OL.

1.24 Vernon Butler, DT

2.24 Deion Jones, LB

3.24 Connor McGovern, OG

Saints' biggest needs coming into the draft were an OG/OT and basically every defensive position except LB. We've addressed our top three, the first two of which happened to be the BPA on the board:

1.12 - Shaq Lawson, DE, Clemson

Accomplished 5-technique who can slot in at any position in the Saints' base 4-3 from tackle to edge rusher. Extremely quick and agile for a guy his size, he'll be a day 1 starter who will instantly upgrade the Saints' woeful pass rush.

2.47 - Germain Ifedi, OT, Texas A&M

A monster hulk of clay that needs some work but in the right hands can be sculpted into a perennial Pro Bowl tackle. Likely to slot in immediately at OG while he perfects his technique, with the aim of moving outside in 1-2 years to keep Brees' jersey clean as he winds down his career.

3.78 - Adolphus Washington, DT, tOSU

Another guy who's got size, speed and agility to spare. Our woeful defensive units don't have the luxury of developing long-term projects so, while Washington's ceiling may be limited, we'll be counting on him as a rotational starter from the get-go to offer further help to our beleaguered front seven.

IRL, I think the Saints will try to trade down in the 2nd/3rd in an effort to plug multiple holes on D, but from their existing draft slot this should be a productive trio and one I think Who Dat Nation would be happy to have.

And just like that, all the momentum and speed we built up through the 3rd round has come to a crashing halt. I know we won't finish the 5th round, but will we get through the 3rd and into the 4th round?

What about Jerell Adams, TE?

Fills a need, is rated by many as the 2nd best TE, and is mocked to GB in the 3rd round in a lot of mock drafts.

With the 89th pick in the 2016 draft the Steelers select:

Javon Hargrave, DT, SC St.

25 - William Jackson III, CB, Houston

58 - Mike Thomas, WR, Ohio St.

89 - Javon Hargrave, DT, South Carolina St.

This is interesting, do you think Hargrave fits better?
I think they both fit better in a 4-3, but that Hargrave can translate well into a DE for us since we run a lot of weird packages.  And that Ward would be stuck in between a DE and an OLB for us, he'd rush the passer but be a huge liability if he had to drop back.

Hargrave could potentially bulk up and be in the middle for us, but as-is he could remain on the field on 3rd downs.  Also, been seeing him mocked more and more in the 2nd round so getting him in the 3rd is good value for a quality player.

For Pitt, yes.  I think they need more of a plugger and anyone who can play two-gap.  Hargrave or Ioannidis are the type of players I'm looking for in the 3rd.  If Pitt can't get Joseph in the first, I usually target Butler or Billings.  If I don't get a NT in the 1st, I look for Jones to slip in the 2nd or take Hargrave or Ioannidis in the 3rd because I think that is the end of starter quality inside men. I want more of a two-down NT to get our 3-4 base back to being useful (our 3-4 hasn't been effective since losing Hampton) and by the 3rd round I am OK with someone who doesn't play 3 downs.

Heyward and Tuitt are perfect inside guys for 3rd down but we lost our best (and wasn't all that good) true NT.  The next guy up at that spot is even less impressive that the one we didn't mind losing and is a high priority in the draft IMO.  I believe that safety and NT is actually a bigger need for this team than CB since we have our 2nd round pick from last year entering the roster for the first time as Golson missed his entire rookie season to injury, and losing A. Blake is addition by subtraction as he was outplayed by every other CB on our roster yet somehow kept starting.  Our CB situation is actually better than last year, aside from Gay being a year older (31) and finding his successor is becoming a higher priority every year.  I have a couple CBs I like in the 3rd and 4th and am happy to take Artie Burns in the 2nd if he falls there.

I think there is a LOT of WR talent available in rounds 3+.
Ok, but round 3 just passed and still no WR. Let's be real here, are we talking about taking a guy in rd4+ now and plugging him in as a starter wk1?

Seeing how quickly things got out of hand once we went DL (didn't hate that) and Shepard went before rd2 makes me terrified of anything other than RD1WR.
