Speaking of sterioids and suspensions (1 Viewer)

I know that the NFL will suspend a player 4 games for the 1st offense, and a season for the 2nd offense. My question is:

If NFL teams truly care about 'character' guys, why wouldnt the team cut a player who is found to be using performance enhancing drugs? Is it fair to say that NFL teams dont care at all about their players using steriods since they dont enforce any penalty on their player and allow the NFLs policy to runs its course?

Simple, if a guy was juicing up, he's turned himself into a stud player thru chemicals. He sits out a few games for suspension then comes back and is still more than likely better than his peers, backup players etc. In essesence, his presence on the field helps his team win. After a while off the juice, he'll come back down to earth and probably be just a mediocre player who then becomes expendable, but there is still a period of exploitation of the "juice effects" that can help the team win..that is until the juiced up 265 lbs linebacker no longer can run the 4.4. forty anymore.

FTR: Many of the cell altering effects of "juice" are permanent. While a person is "on" he certainly has many benefits that dont last (increased protein synthesis being the main culprit, with increased size from water retention in the muscle being another). But many of the changes are very permanent. Typical bodybuilders who work with the drug for cycles often expect to keep about 75-85% of gains if they handle themselves appropriatley. "Weekend warriors" who are clueless to the science and effects associated with the use of AAS often lose most all of the noticeable effects because of a lack of understanding of what they are doing and downright willful ignorance. But recent studys have confirmed that the changes at the cellular level (of the muscle) are permanent, even if they become less then noticeable from underuse/missuse. An NFL player is certainly likely to remain very physically active and gain an advantage from the AAS, even when no longer using them.

the hardest thing to try and get a grip on, IMO, about NFL GMs/owners is understanding who else might want a player and how that will effect your decision. You can probably think back to guys with lesser character traits that could find a job anywhere. Didn't matter if one team cut him, the next team would pick him up and also give him a decent sized deal too. GMs and owners are stuck weighing the fear of empowerring another team.Chris Henry, for example, seems to be a real real good WR. Pacman is an excellent CB and returnman. After the initial rumors, the interest wasn't really that strong in those two. IMO That's different than normal, the NFL may be changing. Last I looked, Henry might be headed back to Cincy where he'll likely have a tight leash. Pacman seems to have a super tight leash on too. I think these have ( finally) been handled well.

I would guess that NFL teams truly care about appearing to care about 'character' guys but doing everything they can within the rules to win enough games week to week to fill the seats. I would further guess that the NFL as an organization feels the same way about 'character' guys and filling seats. If the teams and the League is willing to look the other way about real crimes to the world abroad by its players, I seriously doubt it cares about what the players to their own bodies. I know the NFL is suppose to be at a higher standard than, say, the NBA, but it's still a business. A successful business. The NFL and the Players' Union do an incredible job creating a vale for the teams to hide behind on issues like this.
