Veteran NFL players looking for jobs are making contact with the Lions.

Quarterback Daunte Culpepper, a former Pro Bowl star with the Minnesota Vikings but a journeyman since sustaining a serious knee injury in 2005, has contacted the Lions to see if they are interested in signing a quarterback before the start of training camp.

The contact by Culpepper, a first-round draft pick by the Vikings in 1999, has been confirmed by a Lions official. It is not known when Culpepper called the team's management, but it is believed to be earlier this month.

The Lions also had a recent visit from linebacker Takeo Spikes, who has played 10 pro seasons with Cincinnati, Buffalo and Philadelphia. Spikes was released by the Eagles in March after his only season with the team.

There is no indication that the Lions are in the market to add a quarterback before training camp starts. Players report to the team's Allen Park headquarters on Wednesday. The first practice is Thursday morning.

It is unusual for a player to contact a team, but Culpepper has been acting as his own agent in recent seasons. The NFL Players Association lists Culpepper as his own agent.
