Down with the Devil
I'm the commish of a 13 year league with pretty much the same owners over past 10 years. I'm playing in the championship next week. Guy I'm playing emailed me asking if I wanted to split the total prize money and just play for bragging rights. We both already have earned $200 each. $250 is up for grabs in the championship game. He wants to split the $250 and have both of us walk away with $325 each.

I'm curious what everyone thinks. Would you look poorly on this if you were an owner in our league? Would you consider splitting if you were me?

I have no desire to do this as the game loses some luster for me if there is nothing to gain. I would prefer to play it out for the additional $250.

Nothing wrong with this, you're both playing to win and for bragging rights. He just wants some insurance in case he loses, maybe he really needs the money.

Nothing wrong with that.

The commish in my local redraft asked me if I wanted to chop the pot.

I said hell no....my roster is in my sig. I am going to take his money along with the rest of the league.

I play to win it all.

But there is nothing wrong if 2 owners decide to spilit the $$$.

you do realize you don't have to tell anyone about the split. what the winner does with his prize is up to him.
Most of the guys in my league are friends of 10+ years. They would find out about the split eventually. And I'd have no desire to hide it from them. Just how I operate my league.

Absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Last year I was asked and declined (thought I would kick butt). I ended up losing and don't regret the decision... still, there is nothing wrong with it.

Collusion?

Seriously?

You guys are still gonna submit a lineup to determine the winner right?

You guys are mainly merely a financial decision regardless of who wins the championship game you both will still be trying to win.

No?

Nothing wrong with this. They chop the pot all the time in poker, why not in fantasy football? The only thing I won't chop is the title and bragging rights.

I would hate for anyone to look at me as having anything even remotely close to cheating going on. Just curious what everyone thought. Sounds like it wouldn't be an issue.

ya then might as well tell then, its fine. Personally, i would never want to do a chop, and definitely wouldn't want people to know i copped out if I did. but thats another thread.

its not collusion but it is incredibly lame
He's hard up for cash and I understand. He's got a newborn kid at home now and $125 extra beats a 50/50 shot at $250 as far as he's concerned. I would much rather play it out and take the shot at another few bucks if I were him. He's already won $200. Screw it, take the shot at more than doubling that.

I think chopping here sux for you if you only want to do it cause the guy needs the $$$. If you value locking up the xtra $125 I say go for it. Otherwise don't do it for him.

You could always pay out $250 & $400 or something.. It makes a little deal (which might make your friend happier) but still gives the winner some extra money.

I like this... We both have $200 locked up... $250 up for grabs. So I might propose a 300/350 split.

had 2 guys do this years ago. one guy was broke and needed $ and the other guy is just cheap

me, I would not did it

This comes up every year and its always the same answer. The two teams involved can do whatever they want with the pot because it doesnt effect any other team.

It's not collusion but I do think the rest of the league would like to see a majority money winner and I also think right or wrong, many look at is as "chicken."

how the hell could it be collusion? One of you is entitled to the money, if you agree to split it, big deal... :goodposting:
Again, I don't think it's collusion but I'll attempt to answer your question as to why people may think it.Because 2 teams are making a "deal." When two teams are making a deal behind the scenes, many find that kind of underhanded. They also like to see a champ have the stones to play it out and win it all.I don't think it's the definition of collusion splitting the pot but it does leave a bad taste in my mouth.

This was exactly my perception. I don't like the idea of the two teams who beat everyone else, getting to the end and saying "ok, now that it's just us, let's split everyone else's money". A bit off-putting to me as well.

Dont understand this line of thinking at all. Its not your money so what do you care? It doesnt effect your team even a smidgeon. The teams could decide to donate the money to charity for all i care. Its their money.

I guess it's human nature. You've never been to a party or somewhere in life where people talk about how other people spend money and have an opinion on it?I think you have the right response to someone who would say something to you if you did chop a pot, but in a few of my leagues I think the two choppers would take a little ribbing for doing it. Nobody would call them a cheater. I've chopped a pot before, so I'm not acting like I haven't done it just trying to be ojective about it and why some people either have a problem with it or some of the potential feedback you'll receive when you do it.

Also, if you as a commish dont like this you should make the 1st and 2nd place prize money closer. This mainly happens in leagues where theres a big 1st place payout and a nominal sum for 2nd. Fantasy is mainly luck anyways, especially for a single game, and a lot of people dont want to chance a flip of a coin. If 1st place were no more than twice 2nd place this would happen less imo. Alot of leagues are winner take all or something like a 1000 bucks for 1st and 200 for 2nd.

Good point. The league I did chop was similar to what you're saying, like 900 for 1st and 250 for 2nd. Another league where I didn't it was 700 for 1st and 500 for 2nd so there was no real need to chop, there's not a lot of risk involved.

I can see where youre coming from. You prolly will take a bit of ribbing but its usually good natured from my experience. Ive chopped some pots before, usually when the diff in 1st and 2nd is a good deal of money or i just dont want the stress that week. When the championship game falls on xmas weekend i can see why some would like to split it and relax a little with their family.

Nothing wrong with this but I would never do it. Not as satisfying taking home a lighter pot. F the bragging rights, I want it all.

Until they finally make the title game and do the same thing.
in 2, not even thinking about it. its not like a long poker game where two finalists are too tired to finish the game, and decide to chop. we don't do sh#t here. unless you're hard-up on cash, you should finish it.

If it makes it more palatable, this is no different than accepting a side bet, where each of you are betting $125 on the other's team. I wouldn't do it, but there's no collusion here at all.
