Between the two yes choices of "to a game" and "no exceptions" is where I fall on the spectrum. I don't think you should wear them to weddings (unless the bride mandates it), funerals (unless the deceased mandated it) or the off season (unless it's draft day). But in season is fine for most circumstances.

don't care 95% of the time. there are certain events/venues (mentioned) where they are inappropriate.

The only two players I'd even consider are Mike Matheny STL Cardinals (preferably powder blue) or Jrue Holiday Boston Celtics. But never anywhere that wasn't to attend or watch a game for that team.
That said, I don't care if someone does. I think it is silly just on a random day, but on gameday seems perfectly normal. See a lot of Mahomes and Kelce jerseys around these parts.

I have a Cade McNown Bears jersey. Don't wear it anymore 'cuz I got an Urlacher jersey now, but I think I blacked out the "w" and "n" so it just said "McNo"... as in NO!

I have no opinion on people wearing jerseys, but someone rocking like an old Jerry Ball jersey is just cooler than a Calvin Johnson one, to me.
I have an authentic Chester McGlockton one, with the 75th anniversary patch and everything, and I get a lot of attaboys at Raider games.

Corollary to this, I guess.... what about wearing, say, a polo with a sports team (in my case, Longhorns)? I figure this is way more acceptable than a jersey. I wear my white Nike Longhorn polo pretty much every Saturday during college football season, even if I'm just laying on my futon watching the game alone

When my dad passed away, my kids bought me a personalized throwback jersey with his number and SKOL as the name. I wear it every Sunday, but pretty much never wear it other than that. I have a number of player jerseys from over the years that I never wear anymore so not sure why I even bought them now.

I voted "Yes, no exceptions" because I think it's kind of embarrassing for grown men to tell another grown man what he can and can't wear. Obviously I would prefer that people not start showing up to weddings and funerals in their game day attire, but sheesh who cares otherwise.

There wasn't much as much merch in those days. When I see crowd shots from an old game from the 70s and 80s, I'm always struck by how few fans are wearing team gear, maybe a hat or a t-shirt but you don't see many jerseys at all.
In retrospect, Starter jackets in the 80s seems like a turning point.

I pretty much only wear them to sporting events. When I was in LA I did go out in that throwback Magic purple jersey from the 80s. When I was in Ann Arbor I had the Webber fab five throwback. I have a decent collection at this point. I like having them even if I almost never wear them. Never had the money for it when I was younger.

Have several Cowboys jerseys. Romo (2), Aikman (2), Roy Williams (2) the safety. Only time I wear them is if I am at home watching a game. 
I also have a bunch of Jeff Gordon T-shirts and sweatshirts. Most were my wifes. I wear them now to do yard work or walk in the neighborhood.

I went through a phase about 15 years ago scouring eBay for unusual former packers jerseys. I have a Tony Mandarich, Terrell Buckley, John Jurkovic and Lynn Dickey. All are pretty good quality. Good for games and parties. I also got my dad a Ray Nitschke from that company that makes throwbacks. He wasn’t much of a sports fan but loved wearing it at games and on airplanes.

I have a superstition that only lets me wear mine during the game. Like, put it on when they are lining up for kickoff and take it off when clock hits 00:00.
That said, I'd change your list of acceptable times to:
- Any time the person wanted to wear it
I know I stated it above but it seems ridiculously arrogant for anyone to think they can tell other people what they should/shouldn't wear, and when. Super entitled. This is a hill I'd die on.

Same. Now that I'm 40 I find it odd to wear the jersey of some knucklehead 25 year old like he's somebody I should be looking up to, but if others do it I couldn't care less. That said, I could foresee myself even this year buying an Anthony Edwards jersey for myself if my 8-year-old son asked me to buy one so we match. He fell in love with the Wolves/Edwards last year during the playoff run and that experience of watching them together has been a highlight for us so if he wanted to match I'm happy to do it for judgment from others be damned.
So, yeah, to a game is fine or I just really don't care. But, I may find somebody weird if they wore a jersey to dinner or something (but, seriously still, who care?).

I don't think it's that weird if a family watches a game together with matching jerseys. Maybe they were hosting a party and buying food for the game? If so, I don't find that strange.

I hear you, but I am interpreting the question as more of a "do you think it's strange or odd" rather than allowing us to be the arbiter of what is acceptable (which we obviously have no actual standing to dictate and arguably who cares how somebody else dresses).

and the golf course on game days.
Second corollary - I'm wearing a Mets tie today. I just got back from court and my client complimented it. Giving a presentation later today and plan to obviously keep it on. I probably wouldn't wear it if I was in a jury trial, but thoughts on a grown man in a "serious" job wearing a tie with a sports team on it on a big gameday?

This reminded me of a picture my dad took of me and my son years ago. We're walking into Raymond James stadium in Tampa for a Packers game and we're both wearing #12 Packers jerseys - his Rodgers and mine Dickey. We didn't know he was taking the picture but he sent it to me later. My dad was wearing his Nitschke jersey that day and my cousin, in his 60s at the time, was wearing a Bucs Derrick Brooks jersey.

OP asked for opinions, and I gave mine. I'm not out here forcing people to conform to my view on sartorial choices for sportswear. If you want to wear your 1998 John Elway jersey to a happy hour, a wedding, a job interview, a first date, or as your final outfit before you're put six feet under, you're free to do so. That won't stop me from laughing at you, though.
