St. Louis Rams Offensive Line (1 Viewer)

From the little I saw of the game yesterday, the rams o-line didn't look so good. Can anyone offer any insight as to whether they're going to get better this year? I'm trying to figure out if Steven Jackson and Torry Holt are buy lows or avoid at all costs.

Nick Leckey, their current center, isn't the guy the team wanted to go with, but Brett Romberg broke his hand in TC and still can't grip the ball properly to snap it. Once Romberg is healthy, that would help shore up the center of the line. LT Orlando Pace got the wind knocked out yesterday and was hampered by that after the contact - but he's had a series of injury problems in the past few years and doesn't look like a "fast healer" anymore - I think his skills have degraded along with his increasing age.

Do a Shark Pool search on Orlando Pace - there's a great thread on the board with Bob Magaw and other St. Louis homers discussing the OL in depth from throughout preseason.

Here's that thread on Orlando Pace

IMO, the OL is horrid and will limit Jackson's fantasy value all year long, btw. I was one of the few who ranked him outside the top 10 overall this past preseason due to the OL issues and his long holdout.

And they have no depth at OT. Isn't their #3 OT adam goldberg? They have lots of guards though, signed 1 and drafted 2 in the offseason.

The young guy (Rookie Roy Schuening, backup at RG) is still working on making the leap to the NFL level. We'll see how he develops. I forgot to mention that Mark Setterstrom suffered a season-ending knee injury Aug. 16 vs. San Diego, further hurting the veteran depth on the OL.

The line was even worse last year and S Jax put up top numbers when he came back towards the end of the season...

If you consider 5 rushing TDs and 1 receiving TD in 12 games top numbers, OK then...Jackson was great.

Yeah maybe. If I add it up right, he averaged 91 yds rushing and 26 yds receiving per game over their last 8 games, with 5 TD total. Depending on where you drafted him, you'd be happy to get that from him. on the other hand, in those last 8 games, here's the opponent rank in rush yards/game: 13th, 22nd, 12th, 26th, 21st, 14th, 3rd, and 9th. This year, their early-season schedule is brutal, and the defense is terrible as usual, which can take away their run game in a hurry.

IMO avoid at all cost. Had this debate all preseason with people. St. Louis will struggle all year long. The key to winning in ff is consistency, with that being said jackson and holt will get you 25 one week and 8 the next.

Luckily, he's their best player an just got paid a fortune, so he'll still be in the game when they're behind. In my PPR league he was still better than Portis, Addai, LJ, MJD and Jamal Lewis. His 24-yard catch (where he lined up in the slot) shows he's still very valuable in the passing game. I'd back off top 5 projections, but who else are you moving into the top 10 to replace him?

What I worry about is the team or Linehan or both have given up. Did Linehan see the schedule at the NFL draft and realize he woulds be gone before midseason? Maybe. Did some of the players that want him gone (Holt) see the schedule and know he could be gone before the second half of the season? Maybe

That being said, the O-Line is seemingly healthy except for the Center but still played like crap. Not all the time. There were times when Bulger had time and he still rushed it. This is a motivation/coaching issue now. Every single lineman except for Pace had a penalty yesterday. That's pathetic...

Still, SJax is a beast. Give it a couple of weeks. He might be a great buy low candidate...

agreed but this is still a situation I would want to avoid if you plan on contending in your league.

He MIGHT be a buy low candidate but the trouble with that is you have to act sooner rather than later...this team and Washington are the two I'm not confident were just fluke games.

Don't underestimate the effect of Saunders here. Saunders himself has said that it takes a full year to implement and get comfortable in his system, so Bulger's uncertainty may be the result of that.

Jackson tripped over his own toenail with nothing but daylight to the endzone. His stats would look much better with a 66 yd TD. Then he was pissed so he spiked the ball and took a delay of game penalty. Nice.

4:54) 39-S.Jackson left tackle to STL 49 for 15 yards (23-C.Webster). PENALTY on STL-39-S.Jackson, Delay of Game, 5 yards, enforced at STL 49.

This is not a good excuse. Al Saunders was Martz' QB coach. He is a Martz disciple. Bulger played under the Martz system. This should not take a year to get down except that Saunders uses a TE and Martz does not no matter what he rattles on about in the offseason

Wonderful.

Follow me on this one.

Philosophically, a line is not good or bad in a vacuum. They are "good" if they can protect the QB and open holes for the running game. They are "bad" if they can't. Therefore, they are "good" or "bad" only in comparison to their defensive opponents.

Since they have gone up against two very good defenses in the Eagles and Giants and their schedule soften up in the second half of the season (week 13, 14, 15 = Cardinals, Seahawks, 49ers  ) I would say that for the purposes of being able to protect the QB and open up running holes then, yes, the Rams offensive line can get better later in the season.

I would agree with this. Linehan will be fired long before they make it to those games. At one point yesterday Bulger had dropped back 10 times. He was sacked 4 times and knocked down 4 times. Not good for a guy suffering from the football equivalent of Shell Shock...I remember on one play he was hit about the time he got the ball from the center. It was almost comical...
