Last night I went to see Billy Crystal. Several people gave him a standing ovation at the beginning when he was introduced. OK, fine. He has had a fairly accomplished career. People are showing a little respect for that. I get it. He proceeded with a 2 1/2 hour show that was pretty much a retrospective of his career and anecdotal stories from his life experiences. It was an entertaining evening, nothing spectacular. A few laughs...a few moments of "I hadn't realized that" type stuff. Of course, a full standing ovation at the end. Nothing in this particular show worthy of special accolades, but alright...again, people showing respect for his body of work. This performance got me thinking about other recent events I have attended. In the past few months I have seen 4 plays and an orchestra concert. Every one of them ended with standing ovations. The orchestra concert and one of the plays was probably deserving. The others were fairly run of the mill, decent, but not great productions. It seems every performance must now end with a standing ovation. It has become like the adult version of a participation award.
