It looks like they will be re-visiting this franchise on the big screen.

With JJ Abrams behind it, it may be a decent flick.

I was just curious as to who should be cast as the young Kirk, Spock, and others.

Not sure which other characters then will bring back, but you would assume Bones and maybe Scotty.

Johnathon Schaech comes to mind for Spock.

And for some reason a slimmed down Vince Vaughn comes to mind for Kirk, not sure if he could pull it off though.

Just wondering how the FFA would cast the film?

This has potential but it's always VERY risky when new actors try to take over for established characters - especially ones as beloved as Kirk, Spock, McCoy etc. I like Abrams' work quite a bit so that's a positive but as a die-hard fan of the original ST cast I'm a bit apprehensive about this project.

I agree with your apprehensions, but I think since they are going with the Star Fleet/first time in space angle it gives them some leeway. The characters will be younger, thus seeing the different faces is a little less unnerving. And having the characters as Ensigns or Lts their behaviors are expected to be different as well.I think that basically by doing it this way it gives them a lot of freedom to take some poetic license with the characters.

Does anyone have any opinions on the style of the movies? The original Star Treks were kinda light on sci fi, but its the one I fell in love with. The Next Generation always seems a bit nerdy, trying to make everything sound so scientific. I love Space: 1999 (first season). The episodes were really quite suspenseful, although kinda dark. But I suspect that style may not suit the original Star Trek.

I don't remember a "Romulan War" being part of the Star Trek mythos.

yup. a reboot of the franchise, but with a connection to the "known star trek universe".I was lucky enough to see an advanced screening of the movie yesterday and, I gottasay, it was really really great. The great thing is the story, characters and humor areall excellent. Not what I usually would think of for a Star Trek movie.This thing's gonna be a blockbuster.

I'll admit, when this was first announced I was really skeptical. But the trailers have looked really sharp.

I just wonder how much screen time/character development each cast member will be given. They have some decent names in the supporting roles (Simon Pegg, John Cho), so you'd think they would give them something to do.

IMO, one of the problems with the Star Trek franchise is that they have too many charcters fighting for screen time. Go back and watch the previous movies (especially with the original cast), and it's mostly Kirk/Spock/Bones doing something and the other crewmembers watching. Scotty usually got about one scene per movie, while Uhura, Chekhov and Sulu were pretty replaceable.

I'm curious to see if they can have enveryone on screen and it not feel like they are neglecting characters.

That's what, imo, makes this new star trek movie so good. it takes time to give back story and character developmentto kirk and spock, foremost, but also gives us some time with Uhura. Some good intros to Checkov, Sulu and Scottythat develop their character pretty quickly with a combination of what we already know about them from the Star Trekuniverse as well as the actors bringing something that is fresh to the table. And Scotty is really freakin' hilarious in thisfilm in more than just one scene. The comedy writing in this movie is really top notch.This is the movie that makes Star Trek a cross-over hit and not just a niche sci-fi nerd film.

Howard Stern and his staff saw a screening of this yesterday and they could not stop raving about it. Stern is THE biggest geek on the planet when it comes to this stuff, and he declared it was the best Sci-Fi movie he ever saw.

Really looking forward to checking it out.

No, I thought this movie was a sure-fire disaster.However, J.J. Abrams is directing it (LOST & Alias), so it had *some* hope. The trailers looked TERRIBLE though. However, apparently early reviews are saying it's really good. Abrams' well known talent for character development worked wonders. I'm actually considering seeing it.
