Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (2 Viewers)

I'm not reading this whole thing to see if this has been covered, but here's where I was disappointed:

Luke's X-wing is under water at the island.  Why show it if you aren't going to use it (Chekhov's gun and all)?   If Luke is going to go all empty-robe Kenobi at the end, he may as well have let Kylo strike him down in person.   How awesome would Luke showing up in the X-Wing with the Millennium Falcon laying cover for him one last time have been?  Feel like this was a huge missed opportunity for an iconic moment; instead we get a new jedi trick that ends up making no difference as far as how Luke's story ends.
This.

i wondered if i saw him force move that mop...  but it was so quick

I do hesitate to really trash or love a movie that i actually care about like this until a second viewing..   scenes like this can definitely be value added.
He did force move it

Just saw it again.

Ok 2nd viewing the death of Luke is much more heart wrenching.

I actually liked it better the 2nd time. The movie is still too long and has some plot issues but I put it above force awakens.

Of note, lots of kids this time because Christmas break started. The kids are universal in gushing about this one, they all like it the best.

I went in with zero expectations.

There were some outstanding scenes and Luke was awesome.

However on a whole I was underwhelmed. It does not even crack my top 5 SW films of all time.

I am going to see it again of course on the big screen wth my son. I want a second viewing before really giving it a true review.

But after one viewing I no doubt enjoyed The Force Awakens and Rogue One (especially Rogue One) a heck of a lot more. Both of those films are in my top 5.

ESB

ANH

Rogue One

ROJ

TFA

That is the top five right now.

I'd like to see the kid be Rey's brother.

Ky-Lo defeats Rey in the nex pic.  Bad guys win.

Sets up the rest of the next trilogy of Ky-Lo vs the grown up kid.

Thought it was pretty good. Some awesome scenes. Some REALLY corny dialogue and jokes here and there. But I enjoyed it.

As far as movies go, no, it doesn’t deserve the critics 93% on RT. That’s all insane hype and Disney money.  But I thought it was better than the 60% or so audience ratings on RT.

The two of them having fireside chats throughout was kind of lame.  Luke at the end was awesome.  Luke being Luke was good; Luke and Yoda chemistry was just where it left off. Leia did a much better job acting than in the prior film. Loved all the light saber fights. What was with the red dress dudes holding off two of the most powerful Jedi/sith left on the planet doe like 10 minutes of fighting?  How do they not cut up the snoke guards in 10 seconds?

I may regret asking, but what is their basis for that theory?
Primarily they need to tie it all off. You are probably looking at a grandparent situation though given the ages of all involved.

I mean at this point who else could it be?  The obi wan Han spinoff is likely the payoff.

i don't remember those kids at the end showing any ability to use the force.  kid just outside and saw like s ship go by?  no?  did i miss something?
Do you guys actually watch the movie when you go to the movies?

We still think Rey is somehow related to Luke or Han or something right?
I did when I left last night, but now I'm not sure. I think the point to the final scene was that there are powerful people everywhere. Not just Skywalkers.

I still think she is, but I’m not an Uber Star Wars nerd.  I think the fact she still either can’t remember her parents or doesn’t allow Ren/Snoke into that memory means whoever is her parents are/were more powerful than Luke’s, but I’m sure I’m missing something.

and throw my hat into the liking it ring and liking how the “ended” it with Luke.

Liked it alot.  Disappointed that Rey didn't turn bad.  It did feel long though.  Leia was much better in this one but I was sure they would kill off her character towards the end.  Wonder how they explain her absence moving forward

Del Toro's character was kinda lame and forced as well.  Reminded me of Forrest Whitaker in rouge one.  They just don't really belong

I enjoyed it very much.

The force move of the broom at the end was very nice.

I am of the opinion that Kylo was tricking Rey when she said she was no one important just to show her that he cared about her even to get her to join him.  I think her parental lineage will be revealed in 3.   With Obi Wan being lined up as the 3rd Star Wars Story movie, I would not be shocked to see her be his grand daughter.

I was surprised to see on the way out of the theater a poster for Solo with a release date of May 25.  I had assumed they would be running these every winter.

For some reason RT is an excellent site to get an overview of what critics think but it is an awful place to get the fans feeling.

IMDB always has a much bigger vote base for what fans think about movies than RT.  It is still very early with 60k IMDB votes but it is sitting at a healthy 8.1 rating.  That number will reduce a bit over the next two weeks.

I thought Serkis was really good in this movie.  I was actually a bit bummed Snoke died.  I would have enjoyed hearing about some of his back story.

I usually try to find the good in anything Star Wars. I can't with this.

I'm done. They ruined it for me. I'll watch Solo but this was a mess.

Not without problems, still very fun.  About on par with TFA.

The Porkins throwback made me laugh. Rey/Ren vs guards was awesome.  Leia's flying-ET-bicycle space walk was cringe inducing.

I think my biggest gripe about the movie is that every one, on both sides is the absolute worst at their job possible. Like so unbelievably incompetent at the task they have been assigned that it's almost an impossibility. It doesn't matter if your a red head general waiting 5 mins to not shoot a single xwing down, a rebel commander not telling your troops anything until the last minute and then come up with a bull#### plan that relys on the enemy not having eyes, or a former Jedi master going all crochety old man and half assing some Jedi training while ignoring how hard Yoda pushed him when he was already too old.

The lack of character development and back story is what it is. We didn't get any in TFA and I wasn't expecting much here. Would've been nice but they seem intent on going for quick jokes like marvel that land maybe 50% of the time and cutesy Disney esque creatures that serve no purpose to the film. I was right in assuming the porg are Ewok cute with Jar Jar level cringe.

It's a bad movie. There's no way around it. I'm sure some will find it enjoyable but if this didn't have Star Wars on it, this would be laughed at. Seriously this is Jupiter Ascending bad.

The lack of character development
Couldn't disagree more. Thought this was a real strength of the movie, for the main characters.

It had plenty of issues. But you need some perspective if you honestly think this.

No I don't. I've given up. I purposely didn't watch anything this time before going in. I didn't want to be over hyped like I was with TFA. I wanted to be free of expectations.

Butright off the bat they hit me with the first order allowing a single xwing to sit there for 5 mins trolling them instead of blasting it out of the sky. Then we get the longest chase scene in cinema history.

What perspective do I need?

As for character development, who was developed? Kylo? Maybe. Rey? I don't think so. She's right where she was at the beginning of this movie except with very minimal training she can now float rocks. Or maybe she always could. They don't really give us anything to go on. Luke? I was almost on board with this one but he was so back and forth and nothing like Luke Skywalker from RoTJ that this might as well have been a new character.

But I digress. You guys enjoy it. Whatever formula Disney has works for you. Im apparently an old man at 36 and Star Wars is for the new generation now.

It is not high on my Star Wars list.

And although I am going to see it again with my son, just thinking about the first scenes and the incredibly bad jokes and forced humor......ugh.

This movie felt forced (pun intended) throughout. The Force Awakens captured some of that old magic and this film after really thinking about it pissed all over it and lit it on fire.

Rogue One was to me old school Star Wars and I think The Solo film is going to be more of what us pioneer Star Fans crave. This new trilogy is unoriginal and a  rehash of the same story.

This movie only ranks above Episode 2 and barely above Episode 1.

Yeah it was that weak after really thinking about it.

If you didn't like the movie, you didn't like it.  Cool.   But you're really reaching here.

The porgs had a total of maybe 45 seconds of meaningful screen time, With no 'speaking'.  Jar Jar was the worst character by far they've put on screen.   The porgs are an afterthought.

 well then maybe I never grew up.

I just turned 50 yesterday and thought this was very good. I put it right up there with New Hope, Empire Strikes back and Rogue One.

:goodposting: Watching the trailers and seeing the Porg's I was thinking "Not again!!!" But they were not even close to JarJar bad.

This was my take as well. Just easier for him to sell her on joining him that way. At that point if he says “oh yeah and BTW Luke is your dad,” doesn’t really help his cause.

Star Wars was released when I was 12.  I saw it 24 times on it's first run (yeah...back when I could get into the movies for $1.50).  My 12 year old mind just couldn't get enough of everything about the movie.  And above all else, it was fun.  Good guys versus the bad guys fun with some other stuff sprinkled in to keep it interesting.  As I grew older, I craved the deeper, more adult stuff.  I began to see the flaws in the original Star Wars movies and the prequels only compounded those flaws.

When this movie was released, I read some of the twitter reactions coming out of Great Britain before seeing it.  I saw how a significant number of those hated this movie.  So I decided to go into it with my 12 year old mind.  And guess what?  It was fun and enjoyable!  Were there flaws?  Absolutely.  Leia's Mary Poppins act sucked.  And several other things that have been mentioned.  BUT...it was fun, some cool things were shown, it wasn't a re-hash story and I enjoyed it for that.  I think we have to realize that Star Wars is for the kid in us.  Not necessarily the adult in us.

Snoke dying was unexpected but I liked the twist.  But still I'm left wondering who the hell was that guy?  I understand they can't go into back story s all that much.  Just not enough time.  But they do it constantly.  I was expecting more on snoke for sure.
