Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (1 Viewer)

I need to see it again to know what to think.

What I liked

Everything Luke - He was unbelievable in this.  His acting was great.  The years of voice acting have helped him.

Rey was awesome of course.

The last 1.5 hours were incredible and action-packed.

Snoke death was surprising.

What I didn't like

I don't know that I liked Snoke dying.  He was pure evil and he toyed with Kylo early in the movie, toyed with Rey...then bam he's dead.

Now what?  Kylo is the supreme bad guy in the universe and there really isn't a number 2.  So we are heading into the final movie and Kylo is the weakest bad guy we've had.  

Yeah, Leia floating was weird.

Lack of excitement for 9.  I just don't have it.  It almost felt like an ending.  No cliffhangers at all.  Almost would work better if there were TWO more movies left and not 1.  

I'd say somewhere around the 30 minute mark to the 1 hour mark, (the casino timeframe) was quite boring.  I was ready for Rey to get off the island (similar to how Luke "wasted" half of ESB on a swamp planet), I wasn't engaged with the casino storyline and I didn't like Rose.

New characters - After hitting a home run in Force Awakens with Kylo/Rey/Finn/Poe, they completely bombed in their attempts to create any new characters in 8.  

Chemistry between Finn/Rey and Finn/Han was incredible in TFA.  Han was dead in this one and he never saw Rey until the end...also Rose was super boring.  

I gave TFA a 9.5.  My preliminary rating for this is a 7.5, but I anticipate it going up for the second viewing.

This left me feeling pretty conflicted. 

On one hand you have some of the most compelling story telling of any of the movies. In a span of about forty minutes, I thought Rey was going to turn, Kylo was going to be redeemed, Rey and Kylo were developing romantic feelings for each other, I even thought Luke had turned for a bit. It was all really well done. 

On the other hand, flying princess Leiah. 

That and the Casino city/planet was so bad. It reminded me too much of the prequels. One of the things that made Force Awakens so special was the return to sets and costumes. The amount of CGI throughout the movie really took away from it. Even the Island scenes which should have stood on their own with Rey and Luke on that gorgeous island had to have porgs and the weird animal that Luke milked. Shoot, I even wish Yoda could have been Ghost Jedi Puppet Yoda instead of Weird Looking CGI Ghost Yoda, but maybe it's just me.

I’d have to see it again but the dialogue is the key to the movie. The kid at the end is the key to The Force. Luke mentioned The Force as a religion... first time I’ve heard it mentioned in the movies as such. The kid at the end believed in Luke and the kid represents the future of The Force. 

Hear me out. Anakin was a slave/abandoned kid. Luke and Leia were slave/abandoned kids as well as Rey. The Last Jedi is not Luke but there will always be one Jedi in the making. Luke knows that because, Rey, I think, mentioned how Luke separated himself from the Force and in that time, he may have realized the above, to a point. 

What does this mean? The Force is something outside of the realm of understanding in the Star Wars Universe. It’s believed to be some ancient stuff but The Force is always around and chooses who will have it. Kylo wants the old to end and when we’ve seen the old end, something new popped up. Kylo doesn’t understand this... Obi-Wan did, Yoda did, Luke did, and now it may be up to Rey to find this wayward boy in some dramatic coincidence. 

The final scene is they key to the movie.

I thought when the thing chased him out he was playing with something and said LUKE SKYWALKER -- like a kid playing with a homemade toy. Went fast though. 

Yeah, there was a stick figure toy and he mumbled skywalker and then went outside and showed some ability to use the force.

So awesome that the kids we saw for 3 seconds during one of the worst sequences in the movie was the last scene.

I agree with pretty much agree with everything in here.  overall I was disappointed.

That was Benicio Del Toro, right? I just kept picturing him in The Usual Suspects. His stutter cracked me up. 

That whole storyline seemed weird.  How did he know what the rebels plan to escape was?  Hell, Poe had no idea and he was there.  Why would the empire give him a boatload of money to reveal the plan?  He had zero leverage.  He was lucky to get out of there with his life.  Why make the point about money and the defense industry/weapons brokers which sells weapons to both sides?  Is that going to be the true villain in the next episode or just some kind of political statement.  Was that the real purpose of that otherwise meaningless side plot?  Seemed like a complete waste.

I liked Finn in TFA but he was completely wasted in this movie, he accomplished nothing. Even had his hero moment taken away from him with the big donut cannon. Unfortunately they couldve left him and storyline completely out of the movie and it would’ve been a better movie. Imo.

Her getting blown into space was a legit what the #### I can’t believe that just happened moment. Then to see her flying through space turned into a Oh come on moment. Just seemed really out of place for someone who never really used her force abilities. 

Funny, I literally said out loud, "Oh come on..." 

That might be the worst scene in Star Wars history for me. It was a bad idea, and then the stiff cgi work just made it head-shakingly bad.

The biggest laugh in the theatre I was in was the unintentional comedy of Kylo yelling at Luke at the end... something like, "YOU WOULD BE SORRY!" or something like that.  Also, no ovation... not a single clapper.

Yep, I laughed at that and it wasn't supposed to be funny.

I thought nearly all the intentional jokes seemed way out of place and more like they were written for a bad sitcom rather than a SW movie. Though I did laugh pretty hard at two parts... The first was, to me anyway, a nod to Porkins, the chubby X-wing pilot from IV who was the first to die on the battle of Yavin. They had an overweight pilot die first in a similar manner. The second was when they cut to the command ship and Akbar immediately yelled out something like "We're going to do WHAT?!"

i wondered if i saw him force move that mop...  but it was so quick

I do hesitate to really trash or love a movie that i actually care about like this until a second viewing..   scenes like this can definitely be value added.

According to Luke he had already turned to the dark side.  But in Rey's opinion it is never to late to turn back.

Just to throw it out there between the differences of opinions from a bunch of adults (I'm 42 and have loved Star Wars since I can remember), I thought it was very good, and will be seeing it at least 2-3 more times in the theater.  It was not perfect, and a couple useless scences could have been taken out.  But I can forget just how great I felt watching most of the movie, it' hard to explain. Just so many things reminded me of watching the originals as a kid.

The absolute best part, my 11 year old loving it. Thought everything was super cool, and now I get to take my 6 year old next week too, and get to watch and listen to her talk about it after the movie and have lightsaber fights after see Rey kick ***.

Totally agree. It wasn't perfect but it had that SW magic.

I've enjoyed the other Movies, but while watching this one I was swamped with all the feelings I remember when I saw Empire Strikes Back in the theater during it first release "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...."

I think this was a movie with a few really cool ideas and storylines that looked -for the most part- exceptional, but there were some major missteps and parts that are, frankly, inexcusable for me. It surely wasn't a 0, 1, or 2, but it's entirely lost on me how anyone could think this was a really good movie. 

And on the flip side, I think a lot of people decided they were going to like this going in, and as such have said this is a great movie. 

ETA: By inexcusable, I mean both from a Star Wars perspective and from a just-make-a-decent-movie perspective.

The Leia part, casino part, the whole pointless Finn and Rose stuff, the utter lack of developing Snoke (who, btw, looked FANTASTIC), the porgs... And then it was those horrible, horrible jokes that they forced. 

The Luke stuff was great though, and the Kylo/Rey team-up was cool. And that first fight scene with Poe was damn awesome.

I agree with wanting to know about Snoke and maybe Knights of Ren. Don't care at all about Phasma and we already know enough about the First Order.

I guess it's a two way street. On one hand the expectations are high so there's more room for letdown. On the other you already have people jacked up to see Luke and what happens next, so when you make so many missteps it is even more of a letdown.

I think it was IMDB that had it rated something like an 8.7 yesterday, and then last night when I read it it was down to 8.0 and the most recent 100 reviews almost universally panned it.

I'd rate it a 4 right now, but I'll have to see it again. I'll probably give it a 5 or 6 after that. I have it solidly below 4, 5, 6 and Rogue One.

My friend that's a huge Star Wars fan saw it last night and said it was pretty good.  He had it below Rogue One though and I've been seeing a lot of reviews with similar opinions.

I loved Rogue One. I would have it a hair under R1 I think. 

All 3 of the Disney era movies are in my top-4 though (along with Empire). Of that I am sure.

I've been a huge fan of how Disney has been handling the franchise compared to how the prequels were handled.  I think they are much more in line with and give the same feel as the original movies.

I enjoyed it but not as much as TFW.  I'd probably put it 4th out of the 6 movies (above Empire and Rogue One).

Bad:

• Casino planet was dumb, cut that whole part out. 
  
• Some pretty bad cheesy jokes. 
  
• The furball critters.
  

Good:

• Opening space fight scene was probably the best space fight in the series. 
  
• When the sound went silent as the admiral went light speed through the Empire fleet was really great. 
  
• Kylo/Rey team up. 
  
• Kylo choking Hux. 
  
• Luke fight scene. 
  
• And even though I pointed out cheesy jokes above, I liked the "Rey destroys the island/natives are grumpy" jokes.
  

Edited to add: The crowd was really great in my theater.  Lots of cheering and did get an ovation at the end.  Also, some uber-nerd in jedi robes let my kid take a picture with his awesome replica lightsaber.

I think a lot of people have a special place for Rogue One because of how it directly tied into the original movies.  So, once again we have that correlation with the originals that everyone holds so dear.  It's hard to measure up to those.

I'm hoping I can see the movie tomorrow morning or some time this weekend but it's not looking good so far.
