Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (2 Viewers)

Really? I had no idea. I stand corrected.
Didn’t know she had a role in AHS, had thought she was a fringe actress that just got her role in SW because of Fisher. Thought she was good, how was she in AHS?

Yeah, they totally got me, too. I thought he was really there. But with hindsight you see that he never actually interacted with Kylo. Light sabers never met, Luke only dodged that kind of thing. I thought that was well done.

I'm actually rather angry that they killed off Luke this way. He was so tired from pretending to be on the planet that he died? That's just lame.
I kinda agree, but if I had to argue I'd say it was more like he fulfilled his purpose and then became one with the force. He was obviously taxed from what he did, but then he's at peace and he chooses to pass on imo.

Kylo actually makes a comment earlier in the movie when "connected" to Rey that he knows she can't be causing it to happen because it would kill her--which is a commentary on how powerful both Luke AND Snoke are, and yet as far as we know they never meet--I hope Luke ####ed up his face with his lightsaber in the past, actually. Snoke wants him dead badly, even outside of Luke being his main adversary in the fight of dark vs light, so there must be a history there. That should have been a plot point imo.

Random lightsaber related comments:

1. It's weird that at one point Luke calls it a "laser sword". Sounds like something someone who has never seen Star Wars would say in an attempt to explain it.

2. Luke having his blue lightsaber when fighting Kylo at the end maybe should have been a clue that it wasn't real--his/Anakin's old blue lightsaber had just been destroyed, torn in half, in Snoke's throne room and the last time we saw Luke with a newer lightsaber was in ROTJ and it was green (by far the coolest lightsaber hilt and color btw, I hope Rey's new lightsaber is green following in Luke's footsteps).

Shr was just ok, kind of like the whole season. But while watching the movie tonight, my wife said to me "where do I know her from?" and it popped into my head that she was in AHS.

I had no idea that she was Carrie Fisher's daughter.

That bothered me. Probably more than it should have, but it might be because it was just another “joke”, a snarky comment when Luke was making fun of Rey in their conversation.

Correct me if I’m wrong maybe I missed the line, but Rian Johnson really let go of the past and never let anyone say “I’ve got a bad feeling about this”.

Also passed up an obvious opportunity to have Po say something like "don't ever tell me the odds" when C-3PO was spouting his numbers. That's a Han Solo thing rather than a Star Wars thing, but it was dangling there.

That's the $$$ scene where Leia should have gone out with a bang imo, rather than that random purple-haired Admiral whose only job was to show Po he had more to learn before he was ready to lead.

But obviously Carrie Fisher was in way too many important scenes after that happened for them to cut the movie to pieces, put it back together, and still make it work.

I do think it would have been a better movie had it gone down that way...and then you don't have to have the stupid Force illusionary dice fade away after the twist is revealed that Luke isn't really there (I never bought it anyways because I didn't think the writers would credit the audience as being smart enough to remember that Luke's X-Wing (and way off the planet) was shown submerged at the beginning of the movie). But they obviously really wanted one last scene on screen between Luke and Leia when they filmed it originally, and a scene where Leia basically turns the Resistance over to Po and nods approvingly at what he's learned.
I didn't know when he was speaking to Leia that he was projecting. I suspected it when he got blown up and did the brush-off, but they really tipped their hand when he fired up the blue light saber.

Terrible.

Mark Hammill was actually good and should get more work. But that might have been worse than prequels. Nothing making me want to see the next one.
I'm in the same boat. The "humor" was way too forced and detracted from the mood of a Star Wars movie, the porgs were just stupid, some of the story lines weren't really developed, and many parts dragged on too far. The Luke stuff was pretty good, the Poe fights early were great, and the collision was cool. But overall I thought it was bad movie. And I get it, Star Wars movies are never what I'd consider to be a good movie, but man... those terrible jokes...

Of the last three, if say this one and rogue one are better than force awakens.

Only real issues was it was too long, could have been edited down by 30 mins and told a tighter story. It's like they tried to squeeze the plots from a new hope and empire strikes back into one movie.

Daisy Ridley is hot

Mark Hamill was great

Carrie Fisher was ok.

PO character wasn't quite as good. Finn was great. The new Rose character I could have done without. The ending obviously sets up the next installment but I would have preferred a different emphasis.

As per Rey's parents it's either she really was abandoned by druggies or she is the secret daughter of han Solo and Leia and therefore kylo's fraternal twin. I don't have a clue it's just a guess.

I thought Finn might be a force user but this movie rules that out.

Overall I liked it, glad I didn't go in with sky high expectations and I think it will benefit from repeated viewings to catch the many things I'm sure I missed in first viewing. Theater was packed and loud.

GTFOH Leia dying, then using the force to fly through space. That really took away from the movie a lot, at least in the 1st half. After I forgot about that it became much more enjoyable.

Daisy Ridley's face is flawless.  Best part of the movie.

They really went back to the porg-well way too many times.  It was funny and they kind of ruined it.  Young kids loved it though.  The humor in several places was a bit off IMO.  Just not of the Star Wars universe.  Mainly the part where Po was stalling the red-head dude.

The should have used CGI to have Leia be the one to go light-speed through that ship.  Would have been perfect and they really didn't need her after that.  Plus Luke could have felt her dying and it would have added more tension to the fight with Kylo.

Felt the emotional tug when R2 projected, "Help me Obi-Wan you're my only hope."  Like my childhood was from a time long ago.  With the passing of Carrie Fisher that scene really packed a punch.

Yoda scene was great.

The scene where they killed Snoke looked fantastic.  Wish the guards would have all had different types of light sabers.

Was I the only one expecting Lando to be the hacker at the casino place?

What books did Finn have there at the end?

The little kid at the end was cool.  Was hoping he would have mimed a couple of light saber moves.  Crowd would have loved it.

Overall I enjoyed it very much.  Better then Force Awakens.

The biggest laugh in the theatre I was in was the unintentional comedy of Kylo yelling at Luke at the end... something like, "YOU WOULD BE SORRY!" or something like that.  Also, no ovation... not a single clapper.

I didn't like it very much.  Though I did take an edible and was falling asleep through the middle part.

I agree that Mark Hamil was good.  But, I mean, he is Luke Skywalker.  He's been terrible in any other role I've seen him in, but definitely good performance here.

I'll probably see it again since it'll be in theatres forever and I definitely snoozed through some of it and it's free, but won't be pumped for it.

That was the very beginning of the movie and it felt like too much too soon. I don’t mind a little humor, and it felt like it was a little too much overall. Especially when Luke just tosses his LS over his head. Come on. There was too much of it with Luke and Rey on the island. Seems like he forced it to be like funny Yoda on Dagobah before he reveals himself as Jedi master Yoda. This is Luke ####### Skywalker, I guess he’s been practicing his stand up all these years alone on an island, finally had someone to test it out on.

Count me as one of those underwhelmed. Not by the visuals, but by the story. The visuals and set pieces were amazing, but we get a lot of nothing other than a large reset button and few answers. Poe and Finns mission was an utter waste of time and all it does is introduce a love interest for Finn (triangle with Rey? or did Disney decide to blink at the idea of a mixed race love story in this political climate?) and show that the downtrodden will be the next heroes of the resistance.  All the Luke scenes were good and I appreciated them not making the whole Ben solo/ Luke thing to be a carbon copy of obi wan and anakin.

Mark hamill was amazing, and my guess is that some of these side characters are being introduced (Laura dern for instance) to have some stand alone movies later on

Finally, if Rey’s parents don’t matter and ky-lo is the last skywalker, then unless he gets redeemed or gets busy episode 9will end the skywalker bloodline in the stories.

Leia floated through space like the wicked witch of the west without a broom
Her getting blown into space was a legit what the #### I can’t believe that just happened moment. Then to see her flying through space turned into a Oh come on moment. Just seemed really out of place for someone who never really used her force abilities.

Wonder why the Asian chick wasn't hot?   I guess they did not want to create a love triangle, but still kind of waste.

Should have just killed her there.  And they should have spun some kind of success out of Finn's trip.  Lots of stuff to really like about the movie, just not the best.

I thought Poe screwing with Hux was one of the highlights of the movie. Surprised some people didn't like that.

I took Luke's laser sword (or whatever it was) comment to Rey to just be condescending. Nothing more.

Leia floating through space was odd. Didn't love that.

I thought the ending with the kid playing with the Luke toy was beautiful. Crushed that imo.

Several hours later I have come down a bit from the Star Wars high.

  • As others have said, fin/rose was pointless
  • PL's space walk was abysmal
  • Luke looked like he was about to break into tears in every single scene
  • Kylo needs the helmet
  • loved the space craft
  • editing seemed very poor
  • no idea how they end this trilogy. Felt like this should have been final episode
  • I missed Han

I went in excited because the movie had gotten such universal praise.   I really thought it was between meh and bad.  But hey, I'll still see the next one, I applaud the movie for kind of clearing the slate for the last part of the trilogy.

Luke toy? Help me out all I remember was a mop.

I get the point that’s there’s a next generation of rebels and hope but it just felt like an after credit extra scene, seemed a little out of place to end it that way. Would’ve been cool if he started swinging his mop(?) like a light saber.

Damn that #### was great. I dunno where it ranks, don't really care. Just loved it.
1000% this. Guys in the bathroom after the movie were geeking out hard. People left my local theater buzzing about the movie.

This one’s going to do monster numbers.
Saw it last night and Agree 100% .. Thought it was Great. I wanted to just sit back down and watch it again right away, but no additional showing last night at our theater.. I know where I'll be Saturday :excited:

I figured something was up when Luke showed up at the end to face off against Kylo and he had taken the time to dye and cut his hair and beard.  My guess is he looked like that the last time Kylo saw him (at Luke's Jedi academy) and so that's what Kylo "saw".  Thought it was strange, but it made sense after it was revealed Luke wasn't really there.

Thought it was really good, could have killed the pointless Canto Bight storyline and made it even better movie.  Thought Poe messing with Hux was reminiscent of Han and the "We're all fine here, how are you" bit on the Death Star in ANH.  Will see it again next week with my daughter, who never was a big Star Wars fan until Rey came along.

I was surprised that they didn't kill Leia. They're going to have to explain what happened to her in the third movie, it seems they could have filmed something after Carrie Fisher died to work into the plot. Now it's just going to be weird in Episode 9.
:goodposting:

This is one of the reasons I can't wait to go back and see it on Saturday... Every scene with her I kept expecting the " Death Scene".. Reminded me of when Paul Walker died before his last Fast and Furious was released.. Spend too much time thinking.. OK<...here it comes, and not just enjoying what you are watching.

I thought when the thing chased him out he was playing with something and said LUKE SKYWALKER -- like a kid playing with a homemade toy. Went fast though.

Just went straight to the last page.....to add this.

2 Hours and counting for me!!! Back with the discussion later this afternoon!

PUMPED!!!!!!

It seems now they are taking the ending from being about royal bloodlines of the first eight episodes to being about the downtrodden.

SPOILERS INCOMING

Random thoughts.

I can’t believe you guys think Kylo told Rey the truth about her parents. Junk dealer parents? As strong as she is in the force? I ain’t buying it.

A lot to process. Good movie, probably doesn’t crack my top 3.

Agree with everyone that the Finn storyline was a waste, especially after they accomplished nothing.

How did Rey get from Snoke’s throne room back onto the Falcon?

Really surprised they whacked Snoke so quick. Makes sense for the story but damn I wanted more of him. He’ll get his own comic book which I won’t read.

They absolutely CANNOT kill Leia off screen. If they do that in the opening crawl that would be most the egregious writing in cinema history.

A lot to take in still. Have to spend more time thinking about what I seen.
Killing Leia offscreen obviously wasn't their plan but what else can you do? Sucks but everybody knows she died.

Agreed.  90+ percent of people watching the movie know she is dead irl so whatever they do “has”to be done. So they can do it 3 ways: 1) kill her in the crawl; 2) kill her in cgi (which they said they wouldn’t do) or 3) use some footage from this movie to show her being killed in the next one (cutting room floor scraps). We all know that Carrie Fisher is no longer alive, so make it early, make it quick, and on with the show.  Unless she somehow decides to run away with lone star in the space Winnebago those are our only choices.

The president of Lucasfilms said she won't be in the movie at all, so there won't be scraps. My guess is crawl only but maybe they would do the funeral thing where they have a wax figure or whatever laying there.

or did Disney decide to blink at the idea of a mixed race love story in this political climate?
Yeah because the only two races are "white" and "off white" ;)

Although I will say that i think that Rose and Finn had even less chemistry than Finn and Wray.

Just to throw it out there between the differences of opinions from a bunch of adults (I'm 42 and have loved Star Wars since I can remember), I thought it was very good, and will be seeing it at least 2-3 more times in the theater.  It was not perfect, and a couple useless scences could have been taken out.  But I can't forget just how great I felt watching most of the movie, it' hard to explain. Just so many things reminded me of watching the originals as a kid.

The absolute best part, my 11 year old loving it. Thought everything was super cool, and now I get to take my 6 year old next week too, and get to watch and listen to her talk about it after the movie and have lightsaber fights after seeing Rey kick ***.

Totally agree. It wasn't perfect but it had that SW magic.

If they were going to bother going to a casino city,  they really missed an opportunity to not have Lando be in the film and play the Del Toro role.. even though that entire scene was dumb.

I did think the scene where they offed Snoke and had Rey and Kylo team up was pretty awesome... but it really did marginalize snoke..  I suppose his backstory will be hashed out in the comic books eventually.

One of the things overlooked by the prequels was that they did marvelous job building up how sinister and awesome Palpatine was.   In fact when you re-watch 4, 5, 6 I feel like the emperor is enhanced greatly by what was done in the prequels.

Snoke had 5-7 minutes of total screen time...  it's really hard to have ever felt his level of evil.. or even be intimidated by him.

Frankly that's one of the issues i have moving forward..  we have a supreme leader of the first order that feels like a heavily conflicted and not that evil kind of guy with a cosmic connection to the hero of the resistance.

I'm in this camp, too. Maybe not that he lied, but that Snoke (who admitted manipulating what Rey saw) put that in Kylo's vision, too. Probably for some self-serving reason like Kylo knowing the truth would make it harder for Snoke to control him.

If she's got all these mad Force skills for no reason, and was just randomly born to two nobodies, why have all the visions and flashbacks that were tying her to the Jedi temple and other Jedi-related things the last two movies?
