Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (1 Viewer)

What backstory was missing from the last movie that you thought was necessary? I'm not asking in a snide fashion, I thought it was fine in that regard.

Johnson's trilogy is going to be a whole different thing somewhere else, right? He's an intelligent filmmaker, and, despite what some might see as some "rebellious" tendencies, he's still tethered to a multi-billion dollar franchise/corporation. He can't just make experimental films or something.

I am not sure what part of "I am interested to see how it works out" is that hard to understand or controversial for you.

I am not saying it needs back story, I am not saying it can be ignored, I am just interested to see how the puzzle works out.

There was some weird stuff going on with the Rotten Tomato reviews, like an unusual amount of new accounts making the reviews.  Would take the with a grain of salt.  That said, I think it will end up missing its projections.  Still do well for a movie, but not a Star Wars movie.

Not really sure why you're feeling the need to be so ####y. I'm sorry the USMNT thing didn't work out. Buy a sombrero and cheer for Mexico, you'll be fine.

There’s no way they move forward with him based on these declining receipts
What in the world are you talking?  What's declining?  So far all the people who went to see it a second time like it more even if they didn't all that much the first time.  I have a feeling this movie will age much better than The Force Awakens.  Since it wasn't what everyone expected I think it's just going to take a bit for some to appreciate it.  Not everyone liked Episode V when it was released.

Historically in Star Wars, the second movie had the smallest box office of the trilogy.

Empire was the smallest of the original and Clones was the smallest of the prequels.

I wonder if TLJ will keep up that tradition......

“Last Jedi” Tuesday was $20.3 million vs. $37 mil for “Force Awakens” on its first Tuesday. That’s around 42% off. $17 million is a big difference.  Monday and Tuesday are big days for adults going to the movies, so this development is a little surprising. Almost every other film increased from Monday to Tuesday by quite a lot. Only “Last Jedi” declined, by 6%. Again, Monday and Tuesday are days when adults come out and sample “smart” movies. For some reason, their interest in “Star Wars” less than was imagined.
Not sure why this is a surprise. For the "adult audience" the Force Awakens was a moment of historic redemption for a franchise that all but defined our collective childhood.

This is the sequel to that event.  We no longer had DECADES of pent up frustration at the approach of the series, not to mention how the franchise would actually move forward into the "future" of what happened since the initial three uber-busters decades ago.

This is, imo, another really big blockbuster sequel - and done quite a bit better than most.  But the nostalgic need to HAVE to see this movie, to relive and evolve from our first exposure to the films as children, could never again be matched.

I think he will.  JJ seems to be a more traditional story teller
I wonder if JJ and Johnson had any meetings to make sure what ever story Johnson helped frame would not affect JJ's view of end game.

For all we know they are all working from the same outline and nothing Johnson did affected JJ's story.

I'm curious what the movie will rake in once schools go on Christmas break.  The next week will be very telling for the immediate success of the movie.

TFA also opened 3 days closer to Christmas than TLJ.  Might make a difference in when people decide to go see it due to when people are off work/school for Christmas..

There are differing levels of suspension of disbelief. It's not important to the story how all the alien languages are interpreted between characters.

Luke actually being/not being there is central to the plot. It would have been just as easy to have Luke not engage Kylo at all throughout the battle - making it look like he's just toying with him.

As presented, it simply signals that there are no rules that the story needs to follow - which cheapens the story, IMO. It's my biggest problem with the movie - the conveniences and coincidences that need to happen for the story to work.
A princess flew through space without a space suit

There are no rules and there never have been. The original trilogy had Jedi ghosts first appear. You suspended your belief then?
I don't get so many being out of sorts over the Leia space thing.

We accepted Jedi can make amazing leaps and safely land from amazing drops while working against gravity. I think it's fair to say the Force is propelling their entire body in those.  Since we never see things like super strength using their arms, I think we can rule out it working via their muscles being supercharged.

So if they can propel their body that well against gravity's pull, why would we think a Force-user floating weightless in space couldn't propel themselves with extreme ease?

NASA estimates a person can live about a minute in vacuum, so that's not an issue unless we're going to nitpick the timing of the scenes.

My issue with that whole seen is that it just didn't look right.  Surviving it didn't bother me but her floating to the ship like that just seemed off.

Projecting himself like that is probably one of the most high end things one can do with the Force and you could tell how much it took out of Luke, ultimately ending in him dying.  It's like a mage in D&D casting a spell that takes all their MP.  :nerd:
When Ren and Kylo first make contact he asks how it was happening. He says the effort for just that degree of projection alone would have killed her.

On second viewing they did a much better job than i first thought at tightening these things up.

From what I understand, jj didn’t come back on until after Pricipal photography was done on this. Which really questions Kathleen kennedy’s Leadership that apparently no one had established the tent poles of this trilogy before TFA.

Jj Doing the trilogy makes too much sense so he must not have gotten enough money.

:tinfoilhat:  Time.... they knew this movie was a mess, hamil was a huge PIA though so he gets killed in post, jj gets money thrown at him to “save” it and this idea that a total jabroni like Johnson, with no track record, gets a “vote of confidence” by  saying he’s doing the next trilogy to keep the press positive on this one

I’ve asked this a few times, are we sure we are still in a trilogy structure?

jedi had huge crossover momentum off the end of jedi.

Revenge of the sith, despite disappointments, had the expectation of obi wan vs Vader

what am I going into the next movie that I absolutely can’t wait to see?  What on paper is exciting you?

This story says they went after JJ for 9 after Johnson turned it down, which is strange since shortly there after Johnson was said to have been given control of the next trilogy.

I assume we are.  10-12 are being set, supposedly in another part of the galaxy with all new characters.

I assume 9 will focus on Rey restarting the Jedi's and her eventual show down with Kylo.  That is just a guess though.

They’re going to need both these two for the next trilogy.

Dear god we are getting a Jedi wedding to end episode 9, aren’t we.

Maybe Rey will be the next Vader.

Maybe Rey will be the next Vader.
my guess is that what ever JJ presents to Disney, they are going to make sure there is a long term plan in case they want to bring back some of these characters in later movies (or change their mind for the direction of 10-12).

we have had a bunch of people post that in seeing it a second time they liked the movie better but I think most of them really liked it to begin with on the first viewing as well.

Did anyone who did not like it on first viewing change their mind on a second viewing?

Unless you're straight up Scrooge or uber Star Wars nerd I don't see how you couldn't enjoy parts or all of this movie.

My initial reaction was I liked it but thought they could have edited it the casino scene and dwelled back and forth too much on the island.

After the 2nd viewing I reversed in those complaints. I think it's great.

For me it's wanting to know how the rebels are going to rebuild.  Where are they gathering support from?  Are we going to see more people with force powers?  How big of a bass ### is Kylo going to be or is he still going to show weakness?

I have lots of things I look forward to seeing.

I am certain the only reason Leia did not die was so Kylo can kill her in episode 9. He was not strong enough in 8 to do the job, this time he will be.

I guess. That sort of feels like the start of a story as opppsed to a conclusion.   Just really weird structure.

I think we have had many people in here who liked some parts of the movie but overall came away with a slightly negative opinion.  I was wondering if any of that group has changed their mind on a second viewing.

I'm going Saturday. I'll let you know.
I should acknowledge that the reverse is true as well.

I loved the movie the first time I saw it but you guys who did not like it as much brought up some really good points that might make me view it a different way the second time I watch.
