Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (1 Viewer)

Saw this in 3D and at one point wanted to tell the guy standing in front of me to sit down, but then realized it was Luke

 
Just saw it tonight with the family. It had its moments but had too many flaws. Part of the equation for me is that TFW vastly exceeded expectations and TLJ underwhelmed.

 
I don't see how anyone can like TFW better than this. TFW was a completely derivative story. It was a complete failure as a standalone movie, but what it did do is provide a new hope for future episodes by adding in some good original characters/actors. This episode paid that off by using those characters/actors to service a story with some originality and surprises. It wasn't great, but it was solid.

One thing that really bothers me is how Rey always yells and shows anger in her lightsaber fighting. Not very Jedi-like. And in fighting royal guard, it was stupid that Kylo and Rey wouldn't use their advantage of having control over the force.

I believe that the royal guard were the handful of students that Kylo Ren took with him after burning Luke's school.

 
Here are some of my thoughts

-They made Snoke so easy to kill. It would have been better if he came back after the Imperial Guards were killed vs Adam Driver and Daisy.

-Why couldn't Adam Driver use the force to choke or impede the Imperial Guards? Is it because the Guards have that special body armor so they can't be affected by the force? For as powerful as the two were they should not have been that close to being finished.

So about to go see it in an hour.....my son and I are watching TFA again (2 times in the last 3 days). When Rey get’s the lightsaber......Obi Wans voice calls out “Rey”.

She has significance. Huge significance. No way I believe Kylos BS. Her parents will be revealed and a big OMG for episode IX. Also the way her and Leia embraced when she got off the Falcon.....I am going with Leia had her but never told Han ( Han could have been out of the picture again) and dropped her off at Jaccu to protect her. There just has to be more to this.

Kylo is so conflicted. Much more so than Darth Vader was. His biggest fear of not being as powerful as his grandfather makes him not as confident in his powers. And Rey knows this. That makes his betrayal of Snoke so much more believable now. Smoke trolled him in TFA and then even more in TLJ. He was mocling him badly in TLJ and called him a little boy in a mask.

Yeah I am going to enjoy it today a lot more than the first time. Pumped.

I don't think TLJ was that far off of what Empire was.  Young kid with powers goes to learn from a Jedi Master while their friends battle it out with the big bad.  Friends get betrayed, young kid goes back untrained to face off vs. big bad and learns about their parentage.  Features a big battle on a white covered planet with AT-ATs. 

IMO this one felt like too much of a stand alone movie, and I don't that they had too much of an broad story in mind before they set out on this venture.  It's seems like they let each director do their own thing, which is impressive for Disney, but I guess maybe I was expecting something more like the Marvel franchise everybody is trying to copy in that there is a story that flows through all of them, but they each have their own style b/c of the different characters and people behind the camera.

Reading about possible plot directions for next one.

One I found sounds really good to me.

  There should be consequences for Kylo killing snoke.  There are rumors snoke had multiple apprentices that may return to seek revenge against Kylo.  I'm sure hux would gladly assist them and lead them to him.  Just throwing it out there

Hux doesn't seem that strong and isn't much of a threat. They made Snoke seem so powerful.

Forget that it was Luke that saved you from having your atoms scattered throughout the galaxy. Forget that it was Luke, and not Han Solo, that wanted you rescued from the Death Star detention area. Kylo will be dating Lena Dunham in episode 9.

 
Comment spurred by the post of @Politician Spock.  If you think about it, this was an absolutely crushingly total victory for the First Order.

How many rebels at the original base?  How many rebel ships made it out to be pursued?  How many people would you estimate aboard those rebel ships?  Several thousand to tens of thousands?

Now how many made it off the final planet?  No more than will fit in the Millenium Falcon.  A couple dozen then?  The First Order probably wiped out 95% of the rebels including all but one of the leadership. They wiped out every single rebel ship and resource except for the Falcon.

The First Order took some losses, some ships and Snoke's ship, plus the death of Snoke.  But pretty much the entire rebellion was destroyed as payback.

The only place the First Order didn't accomplish their goals here was that Leia, and Rey, survived to try to reignite the fight.

Just got back. Liked the movie a lot despite some bad scenes and some pointless characters.

Leia floating in space was PAINFULLY bad.  So incredibly awful.

Like others have said, the casino scenes (very reminiscent of the prequels) and the whole Fin/Rose story line were bad and ended up being pointless. Really expected Lando to be the code breaker when Moz didn't mention him by name. Too bad. Maybe they're saving  him for the 3rd movie now that they need some old characters  for nostalgia. (with Luke, Ha and Leia all gone)

Although I like Fin, I wouldn't  have minded if he had died stopping the big cannon.  Would have made sense.

Snoke dying kinda unceremoniously without backstory was disappointing.

Some of the humor (the Luke shoulder brush especially) seemed out of place.

Loved the fight post-Snoke death. Well done.

Loved pretty much every Hamil scene. I think his death was more of an obi-won type "willing sacrifice for the greater good"  and not the result of him being drained from projecting himself across the universe.

Loved the little kid force grabbing the mop at the end.

I get what you're saying, and that's been my concern this whole time -- especially after seeing the trailers. But I felt there were enough differences that I was relieved this felt like a new movie, even if the outline had similarities. She didn't go to the planet to train with Luke, she went to bring him back. Then, while he offered her training, he really didn't give her much of any. She did take off before ready to confront Vader's grandson, who then killed the head Sith to save her -- so obviously similarities. But I thought there were differences in that she wasn't going to get any training by staying and that Kylo wasn't really conflicted about going light. He does like Rey but his intent to bring her to the darkside never waivered. He was making a power move, and the fight with the royal guard was something new and exciting. And the parentage was obviously the opposite of what Luke learned. The rebel stuff was also very different, and there were some good adventure scenes there. So for a guy who was going in dreading that it was going to be derivative like TFA, I saw the similarities you mentioned but came away relieved that the differences were enough to make it feel fresh to me. I don't see how you can say it's both similar to Empire and felt like too much of a standalone movie.

 
It was definitly better seeing it a second time. Actually a lot better. They have me scratching my head about the origin of Rey. I am conflicted as to if Kylo is telling the truth or not.

The only thing that is completely ridiculous is the Floating Leia scene. So cringe worthy. And it was painfully Disney. Even my 12 year old son was like WTF was that? Some of the humor went better the second time around.

Luke is a broken man. He feels like a complete failure. I loved all his scenes.

Rey is a great character. I love her. I also liked Poe a lot more after a second viewing. I hope they can develop Finn more in Episode IX. I really loved his character in TFA.

I reccomend a second viewing for those that were like me and really underwhelemed the first time around.

In the grand sceme of the entire series it still does not rank in my top 6. But it is a good Star Wars movie.

Looking forward to Solo next year!!!

Saw it again with the kids. I was less annoyed this time but still eye rolled a lot. They liked certain parts but we're pretty bored throughout. That's not really an indicator though as they are only 6 and get bored of things not shiny and in your face. 

I was able to appreciate certain scenes better. Kylo and Rey tag team throne room is by far the best of the movie and probably a top 5 scene of all Star Wars. Snoke I'm less annoyed about but still feel like he was a waste.  The hyperspace kamikaze looked really impressive still but looked like anime for about 10 seconds. The Luke and Kylo showdown could have been epic but as it is it was only not bad. 

The casino was still terrible. Just 100% out of place, tone deaf nonsense. Most of the island is terrible. The deliberate misdirection of her parents still feels like a troll job. The whole ending attack is just eye roll after eye roll for both sides. 

Overall I give it about a 6 out of 10. I'd place it above 1&2. That's about it.

 
So a guy who can stroll out of jail any time he wants, and has the means to steal a high end loaded starship with light speed capability is sitting in a jail cell waiting for our heroes to show up?

Ugh so lazy.....just have them meet the guy they went looking for. 

Good movie, but not one I am dying to pay to see a second time. 

 
I'm watching TFA. Carrie Fisher's daughter is in that too. Much less prominent and in the background but same hair style. Had no clue.

Almost right with you. But I give it a 7/10. There is a fun factor I have with it.

But ranking wise among the films....exactly where I have it as well. Above 1 and 2 and nothing else. 

But....it was better the second time around.

I’d be surprised if there wasn’t a detailed story outline for eps. 7-9 before they filmed TFA.

I haven't seen this posted anywhere else. It it has, I apologize. I'll try to make it spoiler free. When Luke made his 'choice' at the end, what happen to his hand? Shouldn't we have heard metal on stone and have seen it fall?

Someday I'll have time to go back and read all the critics posts here...

FWIW, Rian Johnson says Kylo wasn't lying and Rey's parents were of no significance. I'm kind of disappointed there too. Hoping for link to OB1 or something. I think the whole point was anyone can be a hero though and the force will choose regardless of bloodline. That scene at the end with the stable boys which was a little over the top cheesey went to that.

Overall I left the movie loving it. There were many things that I could pick apart like Laura Derns character, Leia in space, and the casino mission but there were enough other things going on that left me saying that was awesome when I left the theatre. I loved Yoda telling old man Luke you're still a dumb kid who has much to learn.

 
I get the criticism about the casino but it's not that different than the cantina where they picked up Han and Chewie. In a way the end result with the code breaker shows what Han could have done if he made different choices (although is it really the end with him?)

That the problem with American movies and TV; everyone - no matter who they are - are drop dead gorgeous. There are ugly and meh looking people of both sexes out there.

Well since she literally met Poe at the end of the 2nd movie, they're either doing a piss poor job of it or it's a misdirection. I still think she goes with Kylo in the end.
