Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (3 Viewers)

If they waited for the third movie to have Kylo kill Snoke, people would say it's derivative.
It was a nice risk he took killing the "bad guy" that everyone built up in their minds. Again almost everything with Kylo Rey was good in this movie. Wish they gave more of it and a bit more back story to it.

I agree.  I loved the way in which he killed Snoke too.  It was pretty sweet.  There were a few moments that were new and very cool.

How's that?  it took the pair of them like 15 minutes to beat just a handful of stormtroopers in red dresses.  Seemed to me like the two of them should have beaten those dudes far more quickly and easily than they did.

But here I go sounding like all the nerds who where freaking out about the light saber fights in the snow at the end of the first one.
I assumed they were also trained by Snoke

I think some people that reject the movie will appreciate it more after their next viewing.  He's obviously wrong, but hey some people are.

Suicide Squad is without a doubt, one of the worst movies I've ever seen. This is nowhere near that. Not even in the same stratosphere. You're reaching here man.
suicide squad was a better movie that this piece of dog crap

Just saw it. I had fun and loved it. Felt like a kid again. I was there with my 12 year old and was wondering if I was feeling like my dad was when he took me to see ANH. Great flick.

Just saw it for the third time.

It was profound. This was by far the best viewing.  The audience was packed and involved, the movie tells a great story, the flaws I noticed the first time went away. The emotions hit me. It was just fantastic.

Enjoyed it. Didn't care for SpaceSuitless Leia. (Same deal as SpaceSuitless StarLord, but I digress). Didn't care for the whole Casino/Rose/Finnnnnn sub-plot either. But I like the rest. Rey/Kylo vs the guards was quite fun and was a new idea in a series that seems to struggle to find them. The silent jump to hyper-space kill scored huge in the theater. Everyone was muttering "whoooooa" when that went down. Thought it was funny that only the good guys survived that. All the storm troopers die, but our heros live after that... Teehee.

Still think Rogue1 was the best flick outta all of them.

I'd be curious to see the Venn diagram of people who thought Force Awakens was too derivative but didn't like this either.

I think this was probably the most original Star Wars trilogy film since Empire Strikes Back. It was packed to the gills with genuine emotion, and the deconstruction of the Jedi is great.

And a note to George Lucas - Rey's dark side temptation was about a million times more convincing than Anakin's. Had she actually joined Kylo I would've bought it.

So after some thought. The story arc seems to be that Rey and kylo are in love. Kylo sees that she will join him eventually, but she sees that he will turn to the good. They are both right, but her vision is more powerful as she could see everything in their connection but he can't.

This is why Yoda says we must not lose Rey.

The other unresolved story is where did Rey come from. She is not a nothing, there's more there.

I agree. Her parents don't have to be from the lore but they didn't just abandon her on Jakku. Kylo feels like he is either lying to her about being no one to manipulate her or he doesnt really know himself but still needs to manipulate her. However he underestimates her ability to sway him. Probably his first female interaction his age in his life. He has no idea how to handle it. Same goes for Rey.

Their love story is a million times more believable than Anakin and Padme and actually is one of the few things I can have hope for being interesting in 9.

Just go see this a few more times. Trust me on this

Saw the movie today with my 22 year old son.

We both thought it was great.  I love these movies in the theater as opposed to watching at home.

So much better with the huge screen and sound.  Looks like we are set up for many more in this series.

See I think a lot of this movie was about subverting expectations. Think Luke is going to make a triumphant return and bring back the Jedi order? Nope, he wants to burn the whole thing down and knows the Jedi were failures. Think Snoke was this omniscient villain who would rival Palpatine in importance? Nope, he was just a placeholder before Kylo Ren took over. Think Rey is actually of some sort of noble or powerful biological heritage? Nope, sometimes heroes come from losers.

And so on.

They definitely went out of their way to purposely troll all the fan theories out there. They devoted a lot of screen time to it in fact. Rey seeking out the Jedi tree and Luke asking himself as well as her "Who are you?" Rey's whole spirit journey to find a reflective rock looking back at her. Then Kylo teasing you want to know your parents (big dramatic build up)... No one.

They definitely hammered it home. Guess we'll see if it was a feint when JJ takes over again.

Caveat: I’m not a huge Star Wars fan.  I’m not going to be the guy who debates the story and how it fits in the universe or anything like that...

Just saw it and I’m completely meh about the entire thing. It was 45 minutes too long I wasn’t nearly as entertained as I was by the last movie. I also think Daisey Ridley is a pretty terrible actress. I wish the main girl in Rogue One played Ray, she’s much more talented. Actually, I enjoyed Rogue One substantially more than either of the “new” movies.

6/10. It’s fine.

Can somebody explain a few things to me?

What happened to Luke at the end of the movie? Did he die or just use the force to "go away"?

Are Kylo Ren and Rey in love or just have a connection through the force that they are using to manipulate each other? Why would Rey fall in love with the person who killed Han?

This new ability for Jedi (as Luke did) appear to be physically present (but actually not)....good/new force trick?

How did Princess Leah survive that explosion?

I'll have more coming...

One thing I learned today is that a LOT of people are really upset over the scene of Luke milking the alien cow. Yikes.
I wasn't going to comment on it because until now I blocked it out but damn was that weird. Even the creature looking back at Rey like "Sup?"

Luke died. Think how Yoda died.

Ren and Rey were connected by Snoke. I don't believe they are in love.

As far as I know what Luke did was new. Guess we could have seen someone do it before but I don't recall it.

She's extremely strong in the force I guess. She is a skywalker.

Luke used up his life force on that hologram manuever and became one with the force.

Kylo and Rey we're able to use a force Skype via Snoke but then seem to maintain that connection even after he died. I don't think they're in love but they are certainly infatuated with one another. Rey wants to "save" Ben and Kylo wants to "claim" Rey. So maybe, maybe not.

Luke's ability was pretty cool. Seems to have a heavy cost though.

Leia I guess learned to harness her force abilities over the years. Would have been nice to see any of that in TFA or even hear some mention of it even as offhand commentary. She's as strong as Luke if she was able to cheat death like that.

I guess the lesson to take away from TLJ is that you only need to be really strong in the force to do cool stuff and not necessarily have to train super hard at it.

Haven't read the thread but just saw the movie.  It was fine I guess.  It's weird that I thought Mark Hamill was one of the better actors in the whole thing when he was objectively the worst in the first ones.

Also,  I feel like he was channeling Marc Maron the entire time.

Yeah that is what I still don't understand,  if Snoke supposedly created the link for Ren and Rey to see each other then why did it still exist when Snoke died?

the best I can guess is the creating the link is harder than maintaining it once is has been created the first time.

I don't know how someone can say that Ridley is a poor actress. She conveys more with just a facial expression than nearly anyone in the original trilogy did with over the top body language AND dialogue. Her face is extremely expressive and it works imo.

I mean if we were taking in the previous movies, only those with a very close relationship we're capable of "seeing" each other through the force. Leia and Luke. Luke and Vader. So maybe they're either related or they're bonded by a growing relationship between the two of them.

Or maybe it's nothing and just don't think about it cause it was a convenient way for her to say good bye at that point in the movie.

30 years of learning how to put gobs of emotion and subtext into just his voice for his voice acting career, and knowing when to ham it up and when to play it cool, have helped him a ton.

We don't know that Snoke created or enabled the connection in the first place...just that he manipulated it at points. As the light/dark equivalent to each other and having experienced touching each other's minds as basically their "hello" back in TFA, they may have forged the connection themselves. Almost the first thing they did upon meeting was force themselves into each other's minds in a battle of wills. They not only each succeeded, it also probably gave them a uniquely intimate insight into each other.

I still don’t think Kylo is lying about Rey’s parents...she was really nothing the same as the kid sweeping up the stables on canto bight. Shows there are force users out there who can be powerful beyond one lineage.

He is not lying, but only telling a half truth.  There will be something very important that he left out, like he killed her parents or something.
