Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (3 Viewers)

Finn is kind of a dud for me but I really like Poe. Good mix of swagger and humor. I see him as filling the role Han did on the OT to an extent.
Which is completely a testament to Oscar Isaac's performance, that he's so likeable, because we know infinitely less about Poe than we did about Han. There's no backstory. He's just a cool guy who is a great pilot. That character is 100% reliant on the actor pulling it off.

It definitely was not as good as critics said. I liked both TFA and RO better.
It’s a 93% on rotten tomatoes right now which f’ing insane. If it wasn’t Star Wars, we’d be talking 50% tops.

The Phantom Menace was a 55% and the Clone Wars was a 66% if that shows you anything about the pass that these movies get.

Just saw it....thought it was good.  Not getting the hate......I guess the hardcore nerds have had 30+ years to tell each other these stories; that when they don't go their way they get their underoos in a bunch.

GOOD

Benecio Del Toro was money.  As the new Lando.....I'll look forward to him coming back.

Rey/Finn/Poe/Ren - All four work.  They all have charisma.  They all play their characters well.

Killing Snoke - Didn't see that one happening.

Rey's heritage - This might be a bit of a red herring....but I'm fine with it.

Luke - He was never a Boss....so he wasn't going out like one...cutting down everything. His death was, more or less, perfect.

Porgs - They worked.

THE BAD

The casino scene was extraneous.  To me, it was a hail mary in the story telling by putting this aspect in there.

Laura Dern as Leia.  Dern wasn't bad......but all of her actions mean more if it were Leia.

Just got back.  I would say OK, but easily my least favorite of the recent 3.

I was actually a little bored during the middle part and was probably hoping for more Rey and Kylo, less Finn and Rose.

Also Leia floating back to the ship?? :lmao:

The forced romance between he and rose is cringeworthy.  The part after she wrecks him from the canon and tells him she loves him after a couple of days is so not star wars.  Just forced
Meh.  She was starstruck when they met.  They set up HER infatuation with him from the beginnning.

I mean the reason for the whole casino thing was to give Finn something to do. Without it, how much screen time does he get?
the same thing Luke did in TFA - nothing....if they could sit out Luke Skywalker a movie they can sit out Fin....

If finn doesn't goto the casino planet the whole second part of the movie doesn't happen. They figured out the rebel plan due to del toros character. How many people did finn get killed?

But at least he had that much anticipated show down with Phasma!

The casino spot was not pointless. The second movie in these trilogies is when the bad guys get their heat. The Resistance getting obliterated is the point.

Let's put it a different way: it is kind of refreshing that a harebrained, risky plan blows up in the good guys' faces and leaves them beyond hope. You don't see that too often.

This could have had the same impact if they had a hacker from the resistance go to crack it with Finn right away and then fail. Saves 30 mins of movie and gets same results.

They spend time building up finding Luke then he doesn't teach Rey anything of significance? The time spent on the island was mostly pointless. The Jedi texts may have been interesting but of course they were promptly destroyed.

The only lightsaber duel was against guards with no force powers. Really? I've mostly enjoyed the new Star Wars films but there wasn't much I liked about this one.
Not pointless- there are some cute new characters introduced to sell to the kiddies!

You know, they could have cut it down to just a few minutes.

Kylo kill Snoke 10 seconds

Luke dies 5 seconds

Rey chop something with light saber 15 seconds

Rest of Rebel fleet gets shot down 20 seconds

credits roll for the rest

They could have covered the story in the opening text. No need to even do a movie.

*Insein has a friend over*

Insein:  Do you want to watch a movie?

Friend:  Sure

Insein:  Ok, take a look at my movie library.  What do you want to watch?

Friend:  Uhh, all you have is Citizen Kane

Insein:  Well, that's the last movie they made without major plot holes

I’m sorry, I’m about 12 pages behind and don’t know if I have the time to catch up. Overall, I liked the movie. Flying Princess was obviously terrible, but the red salt planet was the second best set piece of the series after Hoth, imo.

One question - I didn’t understand the bombers. It was like they dropped their payload WWII-style, but there’s no gravity in space, right?  I’m sure someone has offered an explanation somewhere in the last dozen pages.

Well Tie Bombers have thrust on the bombs themselves as they are fired....not dropped......I did not see that on these......they just might have missed that and did not think people who know space has no gravity would over look it LOL!!!

Saw it earlier today and exactly where I'm at.

It's the force bro

They sure dropped the bomb on that one.

Even if the bombs had thrusters. The detonator she needed to drop to her did not.
There's gravity on the ship, though. At least until the bombs leave. Otherwise there's be no air for the pilot once the bomb doors are opened

Of course there is gravity in space.  WTF

Pfft. I don't own Citizen Kane because they didn't release the ultimate Blu Ray limited edition where you can see Orson Wells sweat drip down his face as he has a heart attack.

Actually no they haven't. That was something that I just went with. But now you made me think about it. Damn it.

A princess flew threw space without a space suit and that's your question?

just saw this today.....the new trilogy is not good. I thought that Rogue One was excellent.

Lukes death much like Hans was lame. Have Kylo cut luke down infront of Rey, I think they should of made Reys and Lukes bond stronger. Like Obiwan and Luke.....they kinda went for the if you strike me down Ill just become stronger thing. Hard to recapture the magic of the first trilogy, they have tried and have failed.

And who was Snoke? does it matter?

Is Rey the twin brother of Kylo Ren? must be right?

It's easy to imagine the bombs may have an internal switch that engages a magnetic propulsion system accelerating the bombs as they leave the spacecraft, then disengaging them when the field would slow them down relative to the target.  So the bombs aren't necessarily falling, but given an initial velocity leaving the spacecraft.  Additional guidance modules could easily be incorporated to the bomb based on other aspects of the target.  I could be wrong, since I didn't see the blueprints on the rebel bombers or how their bombs work.  I don't see why we need to get this granular though, is everyone OK with lightsabers?  Hyperspace?  Can we just accept that this galaxy has possession of technology that we find to be fantastical.  We should, it's a fantasy movie. (don't mean to get preachy to you in particular bigbottom)

It's a long time ago in a galaxy far away.  It's not a documentary.
