Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (2 Viewers)

Lukes death much like Hans was lame. Have Kylo cut luke down infront of Rey, I think they should of made Reys and Lukes bond stronger. Like Obiwan and Luke.....they kinda went for the if you strike me down Ill just become stronger thing. Hard to recapture the magic of the first trilogy, they have tried and have failed.

And who was Snoke? does it matter? 

Is Rey the twin brother of Kylo Ren? must be right?

Maybe those super star destroyers are so large they make their own gravity. 

Or maybe we shouldn’t give a #### because it’s a popcorn space opera movie.

Yeah, but its WWII style weapons and tactics when there is so much better cool stuff to use...they might as well been in WWI, flying hot-air balloons and dropping grenades on the Dreadnoughts ... as story telling goes, this was pretty lazy even in a world where the unimaginable exists.

I can't imagine any scenario where those tactics pay off against a fleet of tie-fighters...

This. If you've been OK with hearing ships and lasers in the vacuum of space, falling bombs shouldn't be much of an issue.

 
Went to a 4pm showing in 3d.  Had the theater to ourselves, which was shocking.  3D was OK, but would rather watch normal.  I did like the movie better the second time.

Well this is an example of where the harebrained, risky strategy paid off for the good guys. Watching the little engine that could make its way to the target was fun.

 
No need for anyone to get their panties in a bunch.  I was just asking if there was an explanation for a simple question that had occurred to me while watching.  It didn’t ruin the movie for me or anything. I enjoyed it!

I don't understand how han's death was lame, but then you immediately offer for them to kill Luke in literally the same exact way.

Since we are in the nitpicking stage, explain to me why the Dernmobile and the empire (er...whatever they are, sue me) must match speeds for hours while we wait for one to run out of fuel.

And why we are at it, fuel has never been an issue in these movies in the past.  Am I wrong here?

Longest chase in cinema history. Also so meaningful that characters can come and go from the battle area at will while the chase is still on.

I assume the fuel also powered the deflector shield, so it wasn't a matter of matching speeds as much as it was a waiting game.

Seriously. Like how long did it take an escape pod to fly to casino planet? And if casino planet was that close, why didn't they try to fly there? And how many hours did they waste dicking around on said casino planet? Looked like Finn was wanting to gamble a bit and catch a show.

It kind of felt like the kind of ship chase you'd see in a World War II naval movie. I dug it. Really drove home just how desperate the Resistance situation is.

 
Well I saw it for a fourth time today. This is the best one since empire. It tells a grand story with several concurrent lines of interest.

I'm struck more each time I watch by Luke. It's compelling and heartwrenching. 

Daisy Ridley does more with her expressions to convey feeling than any Star Wars character I can remember.

The scene where the cruiser goes light speed may be one of the most amazing special effects on film. Ever.

The scene with Luke and Ben at the end just kills. 

I love this movie. I will watch it 50 times

That part of the story was in the 12-14 hr time frame

 
That line when the Luke projection and Leia are holding hands and she says "I'm glad you're here with me at the end," oof. Many onions being chopped right there.

Which reminds me of something I was thinking about earlier, about people complaining how this movie carelessly wiped out things established in earlier SW films. To me there is no bigger example of this then Lucas agreeing to have Leia and Luke be siblings after they had already kissed.

The right answer for both the island and the casino. It was nice to see more Chewie. But if I'm him I'm eating porgs for snacks right in front of their brothers.

That was easily the 2nd most cringe worthy scene. First was the damn cow type animals and Luke getting milk.

I'm more peeved about Holdo's death than Luke or anyone else, including han. She had potential.

i was 10 when Star Wars came it. It played for almost a year in theaters.   I saw it probably 20-30 times in that year.

my office is above a theater.    I can see any movie I want, anytime, for free.

yes, 4 times and counting....probably another 10 times before it goes to 2nd run.

 
Chewie should’ve eaten the porg. I mean he already killed and cooked it.  Didnt need that piece of vegan propaganda. What a horrible movie.

the first time I saw this, i noticed the flaws.  Movie too long, the casino scene is extraneous, flying Leia, the drawn out island scenes.

i get it.  I saw it.

now though, i don't care at all.   All of the Star Wars movies have flaws.   

flying Leia, ok-  she's a skywalker, suspend the laws of space and the freezing cold, i'm ok with it.   Is it cheesy?  yes, but so what?  The 10 yr old boy watching probably doesn't care at all.

casino scene actually introduces a new character and an idea, which is integral to the overarching battle of light and dark.   The weapons sales to both bad and good guys.   there is no "team" just two sides to the same coin.  Count me in on this concept.   Benecio Del Toro killed it in his role, so I'm good with the whole diversion.

the drawn out island scenes in hindsight, there's a LOT going on on the island.   The communication from rey and ren, the interaction with Yoda, the breaking down of Lukes barriers to the force.   Without all of it, the movie doesn't make sense and you don't get the dramatic conclusion with Luke sacrificing himself..

I won't convince some of you, and that's ok, but Rian Johnson did a hell of a job here.

 
Went Friday night. Loved it and will go again to see it in the theater one more time just to see the light speed kamikaze run once again.  Already pre-ordered the digital version on Apple TV.

 
Don't get watching this movie more than twice. Once in theater and once at home.

I mean tickets cost a fortune now.

I get tickets for "free" and I'm definitely going to see it at least once more since I slept through the middle third of the movie almost.

But I saw 10 movies over the last 2 weeks and I think I'd see 5 or 6 of them for a 2nd time over this Star Wars again

First time Thurs night, alone. Second time with 11 yr old son Friday matinee. Third time with 13 and 15 yr old daughters Saturday matinee. Today with 8 yr old daughter and the son went again. I've eaten more popcorn in the last 4 days than I have in the last 6 months.

I can’t imagine sitting through that movie four times in a row.  I liked it, but it was 30 mind too long. Easily.   

It was just good for me.  Not great.
