Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (2 Viewers)

Hasn't Leia always been a leader of some sort?  I will admit that it seems they are trying to get more women involved, probably to make up for the original movies and to gain a larger fan base but who cares.  How is this ruining the movie?  There are tons of female Star Wars fans and they are just as die hard.  Not sure when Star Wars was considered a movie for dudes.  It's basically a soap opera.
Ruining it? I don’t think I said that or would go that far.

But this concept of “kick butt strong women” in action films, I don’t buy it.   Takes me out of it which is saying something in a stupid space movie.   It doesn’t work for me. If you connect and love this new era god bless you.

Look, it’s proven financially that including women in some manner is a predictor of success and that drives the bus today.  But if they made the good the bad and ugly or reservoir dogs today you’d have a woman as Clint Eastwood or mr blonde.   No thanks.

Dern I was the only really out of place woman in the movie. She's a damn admiral and she looks like she got back from the gym. Wear a uniform like all of the subordinates are. And the hair, come on? Did they make it purple so we wouldn't forget her?

It should've been Ackbar but again that was another smack at the old. He died a pointless death that only few noticed while Leia did her Superman thing.

Luke worked his ### off? He went to a swamp and had a muppet ride his back for 15 minutes and then it was off to face Vader. What are you talking about?
BS, he continued his training with Yoda in between episodes five and six.

You are talking about two very types of movies.  This is an entire saga, not just one movie.  I think you're a little too caught up in manliness here, that's what John Wick is for.

We assume that.  What did Rey do between episodes?  She obviously already had weapon skills with a staff.  I really think people are reading WAY too much into this.

There was no between 7 and 8. It literally takes place like a couple days later.

Many more deaths in war are pointless than not.

Yes, too many broads.  Leia, Laura Dern, Rose, Rey, on the heels of the hot chick in the last movie these are movies for dudes that dudes watch on the whole.  Put some dudes in it.

This whole construct has been a skywalker story.  We are down to one living person with skywalker blood, presumably, in Ben.  Put your jedi in other films, original cannon has always been, and reasonably should be, skywalker stories.
You should understand that the decision to include so many female protagonists is a financial one by Disney. Why limit Star Wars' appeal to boys only? - that's only half of the market. By getting girls interested and inspired, Disney just basically doubled its fan base.

All of the new Star Wars commercials for toys have females in them. Heck, even the Nissan commercials have them.

I'm not against the female heroes, but don't really love the true reason why they are there in abundance.

Hmm.  Never really stuck out to me.  I know it wasn't bad because I would remember that, it just was awesome enough for it to stick with me.  The only music that really got me was the opening pf the movie.
well, here's the deal.   at the volume that the studio tells the theaters to run the movies at, its too quiet.    So what I did is go into the projector room and turned the volume up so everything was clear.

It's impressive with how enamored some people get with certain side characters.  Ackbar, Boba Fett and Phasma are like legends to people but have small roles in the movies.

I'm also not a fan of the theme "don't worry about training, if you have the natural talent, that's all that matters." Rey never trained as to use the force. She just does. Or at least she does after trying for the first time in TFA. In TLJ (which is like a couple days later right) she's all of a sudden able to field a light saber no prob, can go toe to toe with Kylo in a force push battle, float boulders and ####.

Luke had to work his ### off to do that stuff and this girl's just like yea no biggie.

And yes there are people in the world more talented than others at a great many things. But we also see people try to coast on talent alone fail when the going gets tough. It's the people that have the talent and train hard to perfect it that make the Masters. This movie suggests that Kwame Brown was as good as say Jason Kidd because he was just a freakish talent.
We talkin' 'bout practice!?

I’m just making a point about construct of Movies. Film has 7 points to hit as a predictor of financial success, it’s why love stories are shoe horned onto action movies which kind of take away the focus.

No one is accusing Luke or Finn of being Charles Bronson.   Again I just don’t buy it but if it works for you, great

The entire point of the force awakens is that...wait for it...the force is coming back. After Anakin and Luke, there were no new force users. A dying breed. This is a rebirth, and the kid at the end is the spark that will light the flame that will restore the Jedi.

Phasma is a legend to no one except the trailer creators for 7&8.

you don't have to buy it, but hopefully you can acknowledge the movies are making a killing for Disney.   They correctly read the Katniss tea leaves IMO and have done a nice job exploiting this undeserved market.  My theater was full of teen girls dressed as Rey.

TFA broke $2 billion world wide

Rogue One broke $1 billion world wide

TLA is already almost at $500m after just the first weekend and China has not yet even opened.   This is tracking to over $2b as well.

============

I have no idea how Solo will do (I did not expect Rogue One to do well and I was wrong), but 9 is an absolute lock to make $2-3 billion imo.

After that, all bets are off.  I have no idea how fans are going to react to movies with no connection to the characters or stories they have followed if Disney continues the idea that 10-12 will bring us to new parts of the Galaxy.

You couldn't be more wrong here.  I know just as many ladies that were geeked about Star Wars coming out as dudes.

yeah he is way off base here IMO.   Like head in sand off base, but he basically admits he is sexist and that typically goes hand in hand.

It certainly helps frame his complaints.

At least he owned it.  If that's what he prefers then I'm good with that.  Certainly does not speak for the majority of people though.

I don't think I am good with.

Would you be as good with it if he said "I am racist, get Finn out of the movie"?

To me I don't see a large difference between being sexist and racist but I guess some maybe do.

I don't want this to turn into a political thread but if someone is going to be sexist or racist then own up to it.  At least I can understand where they come from them.  Everyone is entitled to their own opinions regardless of how wrong I think it is.  I prefer that people admit who they really are so I know I can just ignore their posts in the future.

I liked the movie. I generally dont go out of my way to find things that dont make sense or movies wouldnt entertain me as much

I will agree with both sides here though. Yankee fan makes awesome points but I can understand the insein/psychopav/smacktripper point of view as well.

At this point, there is no sense in arguing. It is what it is

I said this in the force awakens thread. What these new movies did, was allow me and my kids to enjoy SW together. Both were with me on Friday night and both liked it as well. At this point in my life, enjoying things with my kids is pretty much number 1 so there is always that
Come on. This is footballguys.com....FOOTBALLGUYS.COM!....

This thing is going on another 150+ pages.

He trained for maybe a month tops with Yoda then ran off and got his ### beat down. Then we have a 5 year gap between movies where we can say maybe he trained during that period. Rey has no on screen training. No suggestion that she ever trained and is just able to do everything by trying it the first time. That's cool I guess.

Hey kids if you have talent, don't worry about practice. That's not what makes perfect. Just going out there and doing it is all you need.
Is that legit?

The end of Empire, they're already putting the plan together to get Han back.

it is incorrect.

10 years between Episode I and Episode II.
2 years between Episode II and Episode III.
20 years between Episode III and Rogue 1

~1 day between Rogue 1 and Episode IV
3 years between Episode IV and Episode V.
1 year between Episode V and Episode VI

30 years between Episode VI and TFA

Not posing at all.  I fully admit that I do not know near as much as many other Star Wars fans do.  I just enjoy Star Wars.  I watch the movies a decent amount and watched some of the animated series but never read any of the books.  I'm certainly not an expert.

Tommy, do you know how they estimate this demographic age and sex break down?  Do they sample a handful of theaters around the country and extrapolate?
i don't.   box office mojo is the "drudge report" of hollywood though, its a well established and highly viewed site.  I imagine they have people on the ground, along with the studios own people.

the studios are so suspicious of the theater owners that they anonymously audit theaters all over the country

Do you think it’s apporpriate for a man to hit a woman?

I damn well don’t.

And why is that? Because we acknowledge in that construct that it’s not a fair fight. So when it’s done in Movies it’s just stupid.

What am I missing here?

Saw it last night.  I guess I mostly fall in with the consensus.  The first half sucked, everything that happened in space after that was awesome, and the end was just OK.

I'll take the first half stuff a little further though.  Most just seem to think it was boring.  I thought it was not only boring, but also really dumb and really hokey.  So many eye roll moments.  Some people have mentioned re-watching already but I can't imagine sitting through the first half again.

Doesn't matter now anyway. They did away with all the books.
