Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (1 Viewer)

how did this guy get the job?  This fella was really out of his depth.  With the helicopter work done by studios it borders on inconceivable that a first time  outsider got to redirect the franchise.  Looper is a nice movie but good lord, Kennedy is lost.

Still no Solo trailer now 4 months out, they gonna try to sneak that one out?
Oh yeah. Sneak it out for sure. No one's interested in these movies anyway.

There’s not-so-great things being said before it comes out. Supposedly Ron Howard had to reshoot almost half the movie, had to cut out a character, the kid playing Solo is supposedly a terrible actor, and Woody Harrelson is involved. Curious to see what happens with this.

They should have kept darth maul around.  I like Christopher Lee but his character was unnecessary.  They could have had another epic battle with maul vs Anakin.  Agree more on the sith over the stupid ocean beings in episode one.  I kinda liked the pod racing though. Episode 2 was so bad I don't even know where to begin.
Darth Maul is the best thing to happen to this franchise since Empire.

I’m showing both with at least teaser stuff, at least on YouTube

The only promotional video I’ve seen for solo was that Ron Howard clip assuring us everything is ok
You said teaser trailer. I don't think a 15-second clip of a baby spitting up on a dad counts.

These are not good things

This sounds dreadful

To be fair, the information about having to reshoot half the movie and the actor not being able to act came from "unnamed sources." This could be click bait reporting.

Woody Harrelson isn't necessarily a bad thing. OK, it probably is a bad thing, but maybe, just maybe, he plays the exact same character he did in Zombieland? Instead of being really good at killing zombies, he's good at killing Stormtroopers? (A guy can dream, right?)

And this is the first I've heard of a character being cut out.

Fixed

So TLJ got beat by Paddington 2 this past weekend? Yeah, everything is fine.

Don't know. You'd have to check with *ahem* "film" nerd @KarmaPolice.
Star Wars is a movie, not a film, so I have no idea. ;)

Honestly, I don't watch the box office #s too much now that it's bloated with IMAX and 3D sales.  I do think it's rare for a movie now to stay on top for more than a few weeks.  Like an above poster said, people aren't seeing movies 10x in the theater like the old days, so there's more of a push to get your money quickly, get money from the foreign box office, and get the movie on bluray and digital quicker.

That said, I assumed that's why SW had their movies in the Christmas season - less big budget competition so they could have longer legs and get more money.  I don't know how long TFA or R1 stayed on top, and I am curious to see how Han Solo does in the summer vs. normal summer blockbuster fare (I haven't looked at the schedule - does it bump up against Infinity War?)

It's been 4.5 weeks. I think most runs are done before or right at that point.
avg movie  1st wk good-  2nd week big drop, 3rd week dead  and going into 2nd run theaters.

big movie   1st week insane, 2nd week good, 3rd week still decent, 4th week big plunge

Infinity Wars is May 4th (May the 4th be with you!)

Dead Pool 2 is May 18th

Solo is May 25th

Ocean's 8 is June 9th

Incredibles 2 is June 15th

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is June 22nd

Three weeks after Infinity War it should open on top easily. Dead Pool was scheduled to open on June 1st and pushed it up 2 weeks to get in ahead of Star Wars. Probably to get more theaters as Star Wars tends to require extra screens for longer than most other movies. So I don't see much competition until 4 weeks later and then the drop is expected.

watched it again last night after downloading it and had a few thoughts:

- The fact that Leia is so strong with the force that she could do that space trick, but doesn't seem to be very jedi helpful in other ways is dumb.

- the entire casino world thing was dumb

- I have come to grips with how Luke ultimately behaved and 'died'... but I do feel like I'd like to know more about how Snoke found and corrupted Ben Solo.

I ended up liking it a little more than I did in the theater on second viewing.

TLJ may not have done super bonkers at the box office, but is impossible for anyone to insinuate this movie bombed financially.

TLJ is both the highest grossing movie domestically AND world wide for any movie released in 2017.  These days I think it makes most sense to compare movies to their direct contemporaries for a multitude of reasons to limit the amount of variables when comparing.

And out earned everything in 2016 too. It would've been 5th in 2015 behind TFA (2 billion), Jurassic World (1.67 billion), Furious 7 (1.5 billion) and Age of Ultron (1.4 billion), although, it's not done earning. It could still make more money.

hot take..... they push that turd back to August... I guess we will know soon with the super bowl ad, would make the lack of a trailer make a lot more sense.

Trailer coming to theaters right after Super Bowl. My guess is in front of Black Panther (synergy! ;)  )

You're suggesting they might push Solo to an August release? I won't say "never" but, um, not happening.

unlikely, I agree, but going against deadpool 2 is a suicide mission imo

Casual fans? Probably not. The nerds will be out in full force. I don't think Disney sees this as a huge moneymaker either, but I'm an engineer, not a film exec.
See, I wonder even about the nerds.  How much of Han Solo is Star Wars character, and how much is Harrison Ford?  I think Ford is the character, and how important is his back story to the Star Wars Universe?

Rogue One was an "important" part of the Star Wars Saga - in that it had a direct tie in to the events before A New Hope.  Han Solo seems like we get a story about a smuggler who owes a debt to Jabba the Hutt - which we already knew.

It'll make a lot of money. It won't make anything near the episodes but it will have chewbacca and x-wings and the falcon etc. People will just go see it.

Wasnt deadpool moved in front of it? Studios know this will make money. Unless that was Disney already pulling the Fox strings.

I think Solo presents the best opportunity to make a traditional action movie in the Star Wars universe.  The hero being witty and charming while doing some crazy stunts with a not black, not white, but gray agenda, and generally being an overall bad ###.  Throw in Chewie and you have an action buddy movie (if done right).  If it was a good movie I could see it appeal to the non hard core crowd, but it would have to be a good movie.

Did Rogue One appeal to the non hard core crowd?  I thought it was a little heavy on the backstory to set up the story line, making it confusing for the casual crown.  Whereas Solo doesn't need a lot of set up to get thrown in the action and see some cool stuff happen while eating your popcorn.

I agree that Solo will be a very good test of how far Lucasfilm can push on these kind of "character backstory" spin off movies. Might show that folks want more New stories and characters from other parts of the Star Wars Universe that we've never seen before, instead of "hey, I wonder how Character X from A New Hope got that way?"

Not necessarily.   I'm going to take my kids to the Solo movie.  Zero chance they'll see Deadpool.

My kids want to see Deadpool so bad. I even watched it once, just to see if there was any way I could skip a few bad parts so they can watch it. Nope. No possible way to make it kid friendly. I pity the editing team that has to make it safe for USA or FX.

It's Solo, and most nerds are going to accept that Ford isn't playing the character. Like someone else said, done right as a  buddy cop/action movie, you might pull in casual people who are meh on Star Wars but could get into a one-off story that requires no huge library of information. Just my :2cents:

My guess is they are planning on a $650 - $850m world wide take.  Enough to turn a decent profit and keep the engine running similar to the smaller Marvel movies.

Of course that assumes it is a half way decent movie.

I was going to take my kids to the movies tonight since my wife is busy. Looked and nothing is playing. I dont care if  they say P2 is better than the Godfather 2, I am not going to see it

I don't understand why you'd have to be super strong with the force to do that "space trick."  There's virtually no resistance or friction in space.  It would be like lifting a penny.

That and it's not like in the last four decades, she didn't learn a few tricks from her brother before he went all mad hermit.
