Steeler Nation....Is to possible it will come to and end in 10-20 year (1 Viewer)

When I was born in 1970, my city outside of Pittsburgh had around 40,000 people. Now it had 15,000. When I was 5 I remember holding a terrible towel and not wanting to give it back. It was not our families and was a friend of my mothers. It is not like today where you can just go and get what you want. If I wanted a TT I couldn't have one, they were limited not mass produced. If you wanted one, you couldn't just go to the store and buy one, there was a limited quantity that sold out.

I think the Steelers had a huge following outside of Pittsburgh after winning 4 SB's in 6 years. I still remember one for the thumb in 81. That was a long time ago. Most people I graduated high school with do not live in the Pittsburgh area, and that is why the Steelers travel so well.

Back to my original thought, all the transplants will raise their kids on the Steelers but, knowing kids they will end up starting as Steelers fans but go to their local team where they are living. Less people in Pitt, they are still relevant but not dominate......less Steeler fans in the future. Just a thought for us ex Pittsburgh guys.

They have too big a national fan base to largely die out in 20 years. They also have cool uniforms which helps that

No reason they wont be as consistently competitive as they have always been with their great ownership. Success starts at the top with a well run organization

The Steelers played and never even had a playoff game from what about 1933-1973, so 40 or so years?

Those are the real Steelers fans, those who stuck with them through all that, through the 1-13 season in 1969 or so, and their kids and grandkids.

I don't know why you want the yahoos from Tulsa, NYC and other points all over the country who just throw a jersey on because they want to be with a "winner." You're better off at least fanbase-wise going through a dry spell and clearing out these types.

No offense, but I hate watching the Steelers play football. To be fair, my opinion would be different if I had some/one of them in fantasy. But I don't like watching them at all.

I don't hate the Steelers. They're just doing the same thing all the other NFL teams do.

It's their fans that I hate.

wow, more steeler hate in here than i expected. i'm a homer and i've encountered very few d-bag steeler fans either here or in real life. anyway:

my story is very similar to the OP except, like many folks who moved away, we came back to the burgh almost 20 years ago. the fan base is strong and isn't going anywhere. as an example, even with the pirates coming off their best season since sid bream, radio will be dominated by steelers talk, not spring training. the penguins success does siphon off some fans, but the steelers will be the talk of the town forever. sure, some of the transplants across the country will jump off the bandwagon if we suck again next year (and i think we will) but there is a certain die-hardedness to them that i don't share the OPs worries.

It's a storied franchise with exceptional ownership steeped in hard nosed football from a blue collar town with mean looking unis.

Translation - you'll have to deal with yahoo semi fans who have no real attachment to the team for decades to come.

But for you, true fans, you're likely to have the success that will draw them, as well.

I don't hate them. Actually hoped they would win the last two Super Bowls. I just don't care for their style of football. It's boring to me.

The difference between the Steelers and other teams is that Steelers fans in Tulsa have a connection to Pittsburgh and are real fans.

While I can't speak for Tulsa, specifically, that has not been my experience elsewhere.

Cool Uniforms? ;)

I'm a son of ex-Pittsburghers, and grew up a Steelers fan. My kids have been to Penguins, Pirates (when they really sucked) and Steelers games. Showed this film to my parents a few years ago, and they loved it. Could truly identify with the displacement. They left in the 1960s, and each year they went back, there were fewer and fewer people they knew. My Dad can remember the days in the 40s and 50s when the air was clean, it was bad news as few people were working the mills.

They won the Super Bowl five years ago and weren't eliminated from the playoff race until the last game of the season.

Spare me the talk of how they suck now.

Native Pittsburgher who lived in Phoenix and Philadelphia -- I think there may be more Steelers fans in PHX than Cardinals.Decent amt of Steeler fans in the western Philly suburbs too.

Not sure what you are talking about. Pittsburgh's mills were quite busy in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. It wasn't until the mid 70s when the steel industry began to decline and the 80s before it finally collapsed.

The population of Pittsburgh continues to decline but it has been mainly due to urban sprawl in the last 15 years. Pittsburgh's economy actually has fared pretty well over the last decade as compared to the national economy.

Why do I hate Steeler fans?

Because they didn't even make the playoffs, yet we have numerous threads about the Steelers in Superbowl week.

i do remember when i got my terrible towel in the 80s. A friend of a friend got one for me. it was glorious

While those may not be aesthetically pleasing at first it is actually one of my favorite throwbacks because of how odd they are

That is like asking a woman if she was pregnant before she gave birth.
