SteelerNation - OMFG are we the new "America's Team" (1 Viewer)

infantsam

This board certainly has a lot of Steeler Fans and of course it's share of non Steeler Fans.

I read a few posts earlier - and something to the effect of we are the new bandwagon to jump on as far as the NFL goes.

So that don't sit well over here btw - I dislike Duke because half of the fans don't know what state it is in.

While the Steelers should capitalize on what popularity brings them I think they deserve it as the public is responding at least to the image of teamwork, hard work lunch pail good guy kind of stuff. I think it's what sports is supposed to be for btw at least it's what I teach my children and players on the BBall teams I coach. The Steelers at least imo have a minimal amount of self promotion, prima donna drama queen garbage going on. (For example - why is anyone on the Bengals news - they are 2-10 or whatever)

So Steeler haters - is that how you view us?

I know that the local steeler club here in memphis that meets at Fox & Hound Sanderlin is about 90% straight out thugs. There are frequent fights wtih non-steeler patrons and servers dread it because they don't tip at all and generally are complete malcontents that act like they own the place. THey've been dropped by another bar in the past and I don't see the arrangement with this one lasting much longer.

On the other side of the coin, the Packers group has been at Mulligans Quince for about a decade or more now. They have an elaborate tailgate setup in the parking lot every Sunday rain or shine, and typically are quite gracious to the bar for their support. There are a couple older women who are ornery #####es but for the most part everyone's pretty cool.

Take from that what you will. :)

wrong board for this stuff and the Saints are the new Americas team. Last years Superbowl rankings were greater than any TV show including the final episode of Mash. Top that Steelers.

"Americas Team" Is the most ridiculous promotion idea I've ever heard of and Mr. Rooney said it right when he said "We're Pittsburghs team" to bad Dallas loved the idea and used it for shameless self promotion. I'm a fan of neither team and I think the whole thing should be dropped, there is no Americas team unless American football is someday accepted as an Olympic sport.

Well you are right that the Steelers have a lot of bandwagon fans. That much is obvious.

Honestly though, you do a discredit (as do Dallas fans) to proclaim yourself as America's team. That team is located in Green Bay , Wisconsin.

I'm a Bronco fan (and giddy today that we got our team back) so I'm no Packer homer, but that's just the way it is.

Fans own the team and their National support does not reflect any given year's or decade's accomplishments. It's just continual and unbending. You should be so lucky.

bc producers think ppl enjoy their personalities.why are steelers in the news? rape charges and women beating. also, for whining about fines for cheap shots.

Remember about 10 years ago when your casual football fan buddy wouldn't stop talking about how "his Rams" looked like they were gonna go all the way? Yeah, he won't shut up about the Steelers nowadays.

These things go in waves. Although the die hard Steelers fans are very impressive in their commitment.

I don't hate the Steelers. I respect the Rooneys and what they've built. I HATE Steeler fans.

what? most people hate the Steelers. the new fans are bandwagon-ers and the old fans are just obnoxious. the biggest headlines the steelers have had this season is the face of the franchise getting all rapey with girls in clubs and one of their best defensive players "considering" retirement because he got his feelings hurt.

yeah, go u.s.a.

Interesting that the Colts have never pushed for America's Team status during the Manning Era, given how successful they've been for the past decade. Not to mention Peyton's omnipresence as a media darling.

I know what you mean man... here in my town, the local Saints club has staked out a bar for their weekly get-together, and let's just say... well, if any of them were old enough to drink I'm sure it would probably be pretty wild.

Meh. I wouldn't go so far as to say they are are America's team. But they do seem to have a disproportionate number of fans given the relatively small market. I can think of a few reasons why, though.

By some measures they are the most successful NFL franchise in history, so there's they've got THAT going for them... :lmao: . The organization is also run very well, and there is a TON of NFL community respect for the owners (even among rivals). That alone is fairly rare and worth something.

They also have the blue collar rep and they embrace it as an organization. The Steelers, who represented hard working dudes in the mills, particularly when life was tough in the 70s. No cheerleaders, the wacky half helmet logo, the whole thing has worked for them overall.

So I'm not too surprised that some folks with little or no connection to the city have turned into "fans", or that almost anyone with ANY connection to the city hangs on. It's an easy team to follow and enjoy. I wouldn't push it too far though, there are a bunch of other teams that also have a lot of national support and some serious die-hard fans.

Steelers fan. Bandwagoner from way back in 73. Went to the last Browns-Steelers game in Cleveland before they moved out and everyone was cool. Hope to never have the Steelers associated with the name "America's team". [icon]:grain of salt

I HATE Steeler fans.
Oh come on, don't be like that... we're so appreciative of the two "W's" the Bungles donate to the cause every season.

:unsure:I was happy for the Saints and all but this madness needs to stop. You guys were perennial doormats for more then 40 years.

1. A lot of Steelers fans have a huge sense of entitlement which makes them douchy. Some fans were calling for Tomlin to be fired after last year. You guys also seem to whine the most compared to other fan bases.

2. The team itself plays dirty (or at the very least borderline dirty). The star QB might be a rapist. The team also whines a lot.

3. Timscotchet is a Steeler fan.

I am a band wagon jumper. I jumped on when i was 6 in 1975 and am proud to say I'm still riding. The road has been bumpy a times, but there has never been a time when i thought about jumping off.

To the ones that continue to throw Ben's stupidity in our faces I say: I am more disgusted by it than you are. I hold EVERYONE involved with the organization from the towel boy to the Rooneys themselves to a higher standard than the rest of the league.

That being said, there is no team as a whole that has consistently handled itself with class in the 30 years I have been following the NFL, as the Steelers. I credit that to the Rooneys.

BTW, i HATE it if the Steelers are now trying to be called "Americas team". This label is too closely associated with the Cowboys, and there are few teams I would less like to be associated with.

America's Team was simply a figure of speech. I neither claim nor want that title which my post clearly states. I simply wondered if the somewhat recent popularity is as annoying as the Cowboys can be to me sometimes. And I focused on the same type things - M IRvin buying coke off a teenager type stuff.

oh well

Nice responses by a few of you - your reading comprehension could use some improvement.

Hopefully a few more steelers will get in trouble so you can refer to more than 1 incident -

Holmes was ditched for it

Reed almost was several times

etc

I am sorry to hear that some poser's are ruining Sunday football at your local hangout. That's pathetic.

Since the Cowboys have already tainted the America's team moniker, no way I want the Steelers to follow their legacy.

rapy QB - check

NFL's dirtiest player (H. Ward) - check

NFL's biggest cheap shot artist (J. Harrison) - check

women beaters - check

douchy fans - check

Why wouldn't the whole country embrace them?

One player does not make an America's Team. And when Peyton retires, they're back to being Jacksonville North.

It's OK OPS... you can put your Cleveland Browns logo under your name.We won't pick on you too much. You're still the best NFL team in Ohio. :goodposting:

lolI'll get around to doing that. In all honesty, the players are just like any other players and the fans are just like any other fans. They do have superior ownership though. Of course their success is going to lead to plenty of bandwagon fans.

:lmao: The other thing going for the Steelers is that there are a lot of transplanted Pittsburghers across the country that still have their roots in Pittsburgh. So no matter where you go there are Steelers fans there. It is actually the same for Cleveland. Lots of people that have moved from Cleveland still follow the Browns and many cities have Browns Backers bars. If the Browns ever go to the Super Bowl they will be coming out of the woodwork and will be everywhere.

It's sad that you would put "OMFG" in any post, much less the topic title.

I'm not a fan of the politcally correct police, but how can that expression NOT be considered offensive if every way, shape and form?

I have nothing against the Steelers but if you're an accurate representation of their fans, I'm not impressed.

Right up there with the first ever Oregon State apprearance I've ever seen on national TV. Three of four times during the game you could hear the clear and obvious chant of "B S" from the fans. Way to represent!

Stay classy San Diego...

There are front runner Steeler fans all over the country just like the front runner Cowgirl fans. This isn't surprising.

 We all know that when a fan of a team ever says anything he is speaking for 100% of the fans that follow the same sports team.
