Steelers ILB Timmons out indef w/dreaded High Ankle Sprain (1 Viewer)

http://nicepickcowher.com/2009/09/02/timmo...hurts-steelers/

When it rains, it pours. Especially in Western Pennsylvania.

Newly installed starting inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons is injured and will likely miss the season opener against Tennessee. As usual, the Pittsburgh Steelers give us the rosy prediction he’ll be out only a couple of weeks. Given the 10 day hiatus from their Thursday night opener until game 2, that means Timmons could be out only one game. Of course, it’s useless to depend on anybody wearing Black and Gold for medical updates because they always lie.

The report is Timmons suffered a high ankle sprain in the preseason whupping of the Bills. Uh-oh. High ankle sprains are notoriously slow healing injuries. They’re also most bothersome to players who rely on speed and quick movements to do their job. Fast Willie Parker missed almost half the season last year due to a nagging high ankle sprain and Santonio Holmes lost 3 games to the same injury the year before. For a guy like Timmons, who depends almost entirely on his speed and athleticism to make plays, this isn’t something you want bothering him out on the field.

The starting LB duty will now fall to sixth-year backup Keyaron Fox. This will be Keyaron’s first start for the Steelers, as he was signed mostly as a special teams ace. Originally drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs, Fox did start some games for that team. He has a grand total of one sack his entire career.

All this agita over Timmons injury could’ve been prevented had the Steelers not cut ties with last year’s starter, Larry Foote. Unfortunately, Timmons being a 2007 1st round pick meant Mike Tomlin and company were somewhat obligated to give him every chance to make the starting line-up. And, to be fair, LT did play very well in limited duty last year. Once Foote saw the writing on the wall, he asked for his release. That may not be the “official” story but it’s pretty much what happened.

Come next Thursday, we’ll see if that decision comes back to haunt them

That's too bad. But they'll be OK. I really liked what I saw out of Fox in preseason. I think he'll be a pleasant surprise.

Fox has been a monster in the preseason. It sounds like this writer has a grudge and is looking for anything he can grab to criticize the Steelers. Foote is in the twiilght of his career and Timmons had passed him. Fox will do just fine and at a lot lower cost than Foote.

Sheesh, could this article be any more negatively biased against the Steelers? Pretty much loses validity with me, when you let your personal agenda come out in the article.

The news that one of the promising young guns in the NFL has a nagging injury that could directly impact a good portion of this season is news. The rest is just crap.

Fox has looked very good every time he's been on the field, this preseason and year's past. The dropoff to him from a game changer like Timmons is significant, but Fox has enough around him to be fine. I dont think there's much of a difference between Foote and Fox, and actually Fox might be better all around.

 Definitely sounds like the writer laid out some cash for a Foote jersey just before he was released. This is a steelers fan blog, and some of the worst critics of Steelers players are yinzers.

Foote asked for his released and the Steelers attempted to trade him but got no takers. Better to get rid of a malcontent than have him poison the chemsitry of the team. Foote was okay but definitely a product of the system and Fox will do just fine until Timmons' return.BTW, I agree this "report" is crap. It is just an opinion of a fan and as they say opinions are like a-holes -- everyone's got one.

Adding my voice to the Steeler homer chorus -- Fox was an absolute beast at ILB in camp and in preseason. By the end of preseason he was playing at least as well as Larry Foote was at the end of last season. Fox is not quite as speedy as Timmons but he's a solid tackler and he really brings the lumber -- he was named special teams captain for the first time last week -- and his tendency will be to play more "stay at home" ILB like Foote used to. I think the Steelers defense Thursday with Fox will actually look *more* like the squad that won the Super Bowl last season than they will later when Timmons comes back.

LOL at who has an agenda here. This was one of 7-8 articles I could've pulled the info from. Fox is a journeyman, and clearly a step down from Timmons (who was kinda looking primed for a monster year)

Now I know in the past that the steelers seem to just plug n play, and let the system work, but downgrading from Timons, to a journeyman with one career sack could change a few things (ie whether to start L white, C Johnson week 1)

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette confirms that Steelers ILB Lawrence Timmons is dealing with a high ankle sprain.

The Steelers would love to have Timmons start Thursday's clash against the run-first Titans offense, but it's probably not going to happen. He's only about eight days removed from the injury, and high ankle sprains can take as long as a month to recover from. IDP leaguers need to find other options.

nice.BTW I am a Steeler d owner, and not trying to rain on any parades. But when you lose a first round draft pick to injury, it's hard not to worry that the team wouldn't suffer.

Keyaron Fox has never been impressive during the regular season. He'd been singled out for praise multiple times during the offseason while in Kansas City, but didn't play well at all when he got his chance on Sundays. Certainly reason to hope that **** LeBeau proves again that he knows how to get the best out of previously untapped talent and that Fox can be better when surrounded by elite talent.

I'd like to see Fox continue to play well as I liked him as a young player in KC, but I think there's a distinct possibility that  are going to be itching for Timmons to get back and quickly.

This is just one preseason game, and just a few plays, but from my understanding, Timmons is better in ocverage or rushing the passer, but not great against the run...he just doesn't seem to have a nose for the ball. This was the knock against him last year, IIRC.

Please notice that Fox is making some of the plays the Timmons should have made.

Timmons has speed, pedigree and has proven his ability to play ILB.

Foote was a solid, dependable player with very little flash.

It is far easier to find a player like Foote than a player like Timmons.

It's not exactly groundbreaking analysis to suggest that the Steelers will miss Timmons if he is out for an extended time.

However, it's irrelevant to point out how Fox looked in Kansas City, or even for much of the past preseasons.

Players often find greater success in one system than another. It wouldn't be shocking if Fox does better with Steelers around him instead of Chiefs.

Finally, while James Harrison is perhaps a once every 10-15 years story, and in no way am I suggesting Fox is anywhere in his league, just keep in mind that James Harrison looked to be a journeyman until two years ago.

:kicksrock: Harrison: cut 3 times by the Steelers and once by the Ravens.

Has there been any news on Timmons' recovery? He was one of the players that I was most interested in seeing play this year IDP-wise.

Fox's stat line last night: 5 tackles and 5 assists.
1 fumble recovery, 1 win
Color me impressed. However now with troy out too, how many times can the steelers lose "stud" talent and just keep cruising. They barely missed a beat without Polamalu as well.
Troy will prove more difficult to replace, especially when the opponent knows in advance that his potential to disrupt will no longer need to be game-planned against. One of the reasons the Steelers defense struggled down the stretch in 2007 is that Polamalu appeared to be playing with one arm after an early season injury.

Timmons re-injures ankle in Steelers practice, Sweed hurt too

Linebacker Lawrence Timmons returned to practice today for the first time in more than three weeks, then eased off after his left ankle was injured again.

Wide receiver Limas Sweed also left practice with a mid-foot sprain. Their availability for Sunday's game is in question.

Timmons has a high left ankle sprain that was injured in the second preseason game Aug. 22 at Washington. He pulled on his uniform and pads today and joined his teammates for a regular practice, but "tweaked" the left ankle during the afternoon drill.

Sweed and Timmons were listed as having limited participation on the Steelers' official injury report.

Tyrone Carter, who will start for injured strong safety Troy Polamalu, was excused from yesterday's practice for personal reasons. He should rejoin the team Thursday and his status for Sunday's game is not affected.

Veterans Aaron Smith and Hines Ward were held out of practice as normal procedure on Wednesday.
And the saga continues.
