Stella Artois is garbage - Somehow now StarbucksChat (2 Viewers)

It's a matter of taste IMO.  Starbuck's absolutely does roast their beans darker than do most other places / brands, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the beans are crap.  Some people prefer the darker roasts, some people prefer the lighter.  It's not fair to compare a huge chain like Starbuck's to smaller more expensive kinds of beans (I'm a huge fan of Intelligentsia), anyway.  As far as big chains go, I like Starbuck's, and I drink my coffee black also.
Pretty good post.

I would put some of Starbucks smaller lot coffees up against any other small roasters. We have access to rare coffees that a lot of small places either don't, or have to charge a fortune for. Those high prices are a factor of paying for the boutique brand, not higher quality. Starbucks success and early entry into the market has set up so many advantages that smaller places don't have, like owning entire farms and locking in supply and prices years in advance. Not to mention, doing this in a way that creates lasting jobs in countries that don't usually have that opportunity and ethically sourcing virtually 100% of the coffee which is unheard of for most coffee companies, including small places that know very little about where those beans come from .

On a large scale (MdD, Dunkin, Hortons, etc.) you are definitely not going to beat Starbucks core coffees in terms of quality of beans (biased, but feel pretty safe here as most of these places are only even recently on the Arabica train).

Everyone has preferences for roast profile, which Starbucks is certainly on the darker end of (signature roast), with the exception of our blonde/pike roasts, which are designed to cater to those who like less bold roast flavor and usually put additives in their coffee anyway.

GM > French roast is about as roasty as it gets - it literally say roast in the name. The beans are literally almost burnt, and occasionally batches catch on fire at the roasting plant and have to be tossed. Saying this is to hide poor quality is completely silly of course, it's a taste preference.

Wait lighter roasts don't stand up to cream/sugar very well. Starbucks darker roasts are VERY roasted - virtually lack any really flavor of the bean. Those are the types of coffees I need to put something into. I would never Doctor a clean, well-balanced lighter roast or a well-roasted dark roast. Starbucks - yeah on average their darker roasts are over roasted.

what the hell happened in here starbucks is aok with the swcer respect great now lets get back to bashing stella its not just yours its aretwat take that to the bank bromigos

WTF happened in here  this was about ####ty beer and now has devolved into a #### slinging contest about coffee??

I do like a dark roast, so maybe it's the burnt beans I enjoy.  I can't stand Starbucks "Pike" blend, which is really poor quality, IMO.  But anything dark is fine by me.  The Costco bag of beans provides our family the best bang for the buck.

Starbucks Christmas Blend kicks ###.

I don't drink coffee or beer. I'm really confused in this thread.
If you drink too much coffee, beer can take the edge off, and if you drink too much beer, coffee can be energizing.

They have coffee flavored beers (not sure about beer flavored coffees - though I do like Irish coffees).

So what's a good coffee where you guys live that can be had in Southern California?

I also love Britney Spears's comment is about how the "roast" in French Roast is right there in the name. That's a beauty.

Also, I like Starbucks. If you've ever had Dunkin' Donuts, you'd know why.

Drank a Stella tonight. 2oz worth at a beer fest sample testing thing.

I'm drunk-ish now so I'll call myself a Stella fan for the next hour or two

This beer snob ish has gone too far.  First it was dumping on any domestic light beer, and now we are targeting decent imports?  Listen, I like craft beer as much as anyone, I have a few CCB growlers in the fridge right now, but I can enjoy almost any cold beer.  I like Stella, and Bud Light is my go to when binge drinking.  Hell, I'll even drink rubbing alcohol if the right mixers are around.

This thread got long fast, so excuse me if this is a Honda.

The one thing I will criticize  Stella for is the small bottles sizes they sell.  They strategically made the beers smaller to get the case to a better price point.  I know several people who have bought a case thinking it was a good deal, only to realize later the beers are smaller.

:lmao:  It wasn't some grand conspiracy to fool the American public. 330 ml is a common bottle size in Europe. You know, 1/3 of a liter. They don't want to run different bottling lines. Metric system. Get some!

In that case I don't like Stella either now.  Merica!

Seriously though, I don't recall seeing any European beers in small bottles...

Pretty sure 'murica doesn't run on Starbucks.

But this thread is about a ####ty import, so...

why not? American bourbon makers have been making special 700ml bottles for the wierdo euros for a while now

Apparently, bourbon distillers have decided it's better for their bottom line and Stella has decided that it's not. Pretty simple, really.

I like Stella.  Not my absolute favorite, but it's above average and is a a nice change of pace occasionally.  I do think it's price is a smidge too high for what it actually is.

Wife and I are heading out for dinner soon. My beard is scruffy just enough to make me look tough but sensitive. My jeans are skinny but not really intentional. I'm going to wear some combo of flannel shirt with an off color T-shirt underneath that says: Vaping is for Vapers.

I think I'm ready to order a Stella. Will report back.

Sounds like you're ready for a citrousy IPA.

I lived in New England basically all of my life, and if I have to never eat one of those fake egg sandwiches again, I will truly be a happy man every day during breakfast time.

The way to the whale runs through Seattle, my friend. Embrace it and enjoy it.

Order with a studied insouciant pose.

Increase sardonic/droll expression component to 33%.

Brit, what are some of these smaller batch roasts you mention? I am open to the idea that Starbucks makes some good coffees, I just haven't had them.
Have you never tried anything with a reserve label? You are fortunate enough to live in the Seattle area though, so you really should go to the roastery on Capitol Hill.

Didn't you read the BS post above? Arabica beans! Ethical sourcing! Stuff you would never find from other big companies like McDonalds or Green Mountain!  Honestly, it doesn't matter because it comes down to taste, but that post reads like the propaganda from every single coffee company on the market.
McDs still mixes in robusta and neither comes close to the efforts Starbucks puts into supporting the farming community. A recent example is the THIRTEEN MILLION coffee plants that we are growing and donating, including all of the very complex logistics, to farmers in Central America affected by coffee rust. Admittedly we are still not very good at sharing this information efficiently with the public.

Fair to say I sound like propaganda, I probably qualify.

The reserve coffees are really good, but I'm pretty sure that most stores don't carry them.  I can't resist anything from Africa that is "sun-dried," personally.  So good in a French press.

Its like when American soda went from 20oz bottles in six packs to 16.9 oz yet the price remained the same.

Sun dried Africans are definitely among my favorites. Enjoying a fresh cup of Ethiopia Mocca Java from my Technivorm right this moment. Not sure why you put sun dried in quotes, it is of course actually processed by drying it in raised beds in the sun vs with water, which gives it the fruity flavor of the cherry getting into the bean.

Also a big fan of great Guatemala Antigua coffees, which lots of snobs write off as too common. Personally not as fond of Asia Pacific stuff, but that's just personal preference, I know lots love them.

Absolutely true that reserves are limited, but that is kind of the deal. If you want it widely available in 20k locations, and give a crap about quality, you don't have a zillion choices. This is why our selection of core coffees has shrunk over the years, and we've augmented it with the reserve program for smaller batch coffee. Seriously, I know I'm a honk, but make your way to the roastery sometime and the stuff you can get will blow your mind if you are into coffee.

We aren't targeting decent imports, this is a bad beer.  I am not saying the American macro brews are great, but I much prefer them to Stella and for a fraction of the price
