Stephen Davis? (1 Viewer)

Davis is in no hurry to get to training camp, just like every other seasonned veteran. Teams aren't in a hurry to sign an old back either. Eventually though, he may sign. I'd expect so.

As for Dillon, he's hardly a "specialist".

Davis began his career as a FB and is an excellent blocker. I could see a team like the Colts(just an example) terrified of having their franchise QB slaughterred due to young RBs missing blocks/not picking up the blitz and signing Davis. They're done without Peyton and if Davis is cheap it could trigger such a signing.

I have no clue how well Mungro or Rhodes are at picking up the blitz I was just trying to throw an example out there

The Colts also just signed Vinatieri to replace Venderjagt; that AV can also kickoff means that they saved themselves a roster spot in the process.

The Panthers Insider site had ablirb the other day . . .

Jul. 23, 2006 - 9:52 a.m. ET Free agent RB Stephen Davis still hopes to catch on with a team.
But that's about it for news.

I don't think he's done, I think he has an NFL job if he wants one, but as a veteran who gets 100 or fewer touches this season.

Maybe SF, BUF, MIA (if they trade Ricky), BAL, DAL, NYG, DET
This is just wishful thinking. No way most of the teams would have the slightest interest in him. Why would Dallas, with Jones and Barber, have any interest at all in him? Similarly with SF and Gore and Barlow. Every year a bunch of elderly RBs are cut and hang around for a while looking for work before being forced into retirement when nobody signs them. Nobody signed guys who could still play like Ricky Watters and Jamal Anderson, so what on earth makes you think they're going to sign another washed-up has-been?

Bottom line for most teams is, why waste the money on a veteran when a cheap youngster can do the same job for you?
Didn't Watters think he was still a starter, and no one wanted to give him that kind of money. I seem to recall him having an offer or two, but was too proud to take it. I don't know Davis' status right now, but Anderson tried to come back, and got one contract and went to camp only to be cut didn't he? I could be making that last part up, but if Davis has anything left, and isn't too proud, I think there's a Bus-type role on some team for him.
Watters hated flying..after September 11th plane hijackings it would have taken lots of money from a contender to get him to fly often. Sort of like Madden...he flew when he had to but never liked it and wouldn't do it unless he had good enough reason to. Just decided to walk away...he could have still played if he wanted to fly.

Bump.

Any rumors?
No, likely to retire.
I don't know if you're referring to his intent or just to his overall circumstances, but if it's the former I would have thought that he'd have announced that by now. I think that by not announcing retirement it can only mean at this late date that he's holding out hope of catching on with some team during the summer. My outside hope is that he'll do it early enough to get some meaningful playing time as a goalline back, which is a guy I could use in my already-thin dyansty RB corps. :bag:

Davis passed a physical last week with Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Alabama. A letter was then sent to every team explaining that Davis is healthy and available.
The Eagles and Redskins are mentioned as possibilities.
