From Rotoworld - Suspended Panthers WR Steve Smith indicated Friday that he's having pain in his shoulder and may need surgery after the season.

He injured it during the preseason. "I’m not sure what we’ll do at the end of season," Smith said. "I’ll talk to more than one doctor to get a fair assessment. It really doesn’t concern me too much. I’ll play this season." Sep. 5 - 3:13

He played fine after this happened in the PS win against the Redskins. Perhaps it flared up, but Steve is a gamer. If he says he'll play this season, he should be fine.

A bit of a misleading title. Please change to reflect the information you posted - ie: no link, post-2008 season, etc.

Thanks Jeff,I thought if there was something to this, it should be out there

I wouldn't say we are out of the woods yet regarding this, but at this point it looks like he'll play. The pain concerns me a bit, because he may say he's OK, but he may be limited as a result. We'll see how this progresses, but this is not the greatest news that pain returned to his shoulder. The play happened on the first possession of the game for Carolina against Washington. He landed on his shoulder funny trying to make a diving catch some 30 yards down field. He left the game in pain, and the outlook honestly looked bleak, but as a gamer, he came back and played into the 3rd quarter. He scored 2 TDs in that game too. If he says he's OK, it's hard for me to doubt that.

FWIW, I saw the play where he hurt the shoulder, he layed out for a long pass and tried to sort of turn his body sideways and do a full extension with his right arm and tried to get one hand on the ball and came down awkwardly on his side with his arm fully extended. He was down for a while and then when he got up, he had his arm straight down to the side as he walked off and it looked like it was going to be bad. Then about half way across the field he sort of started moving the arm back and forth like it naturally would while you are walking and the announcer made a comment something to the effect of "at least you know its not seperated because he wouldn%t be able to move it back and forth like that if it was" A short while later he was back in the game and if I remember he actually caught a TD in the 2nd half so it seemed like it was going to be no big deal, but apparantly he did some damage...

I'll still take Steve Smith with a bad shoulder over Steve Smith with a bad Qb (David Carr).

It can't get much worse than last year

He also made an incredible leaping grab up over his head on the sidelines in the 1st half well after the injury.

:speculation:

I bet this was early in one of the preseason games (don't remember vs. who), SS was split out right and dove straight out (horizontal) for a bomb down the sideline. Landed on his right (iirc) shoulder completely stretched out and took himself out of the game. Looked to be in some decent pain at the time.

Did NOT look anything like the injury to 85 (burying his elbow into the ground and torque'ing his shoulder) fwiw.
