Steve Smith (Car) (1 Viewer)

Is Steve Smith actually worth a roster spot. If he was playing with a half decent QB he's be stud!! I personally believe his skills haven't eroded, but with Clausen playing and now a high ankle sprain is he actually worth rostering? What do you guys think? I'm apologize if something like this has been posted before, but I didn't see anything when I searched..

yes he is worth rostering.
Agreed, and the only reason I haven't cut him is because I'm hoping Carolina will do the right thing for a loyal vet and trade him to a good club which needs him. As long as Clausen is the QB, Smith will likely never be in my lineup.

I cut him as soon as Clausen was announced as the starter. No regrets. Picked up Lance Moore and have been very satisfied with the exchange rate.

Good point.... I never thought about him being traded, but if a trade doesn't happen, and I hate to say this, but he is almost worthless with Clausen throwing the rock!

meh ... give clausen a few games to get into the pro game and I think smith will do alright.
That never happens. It takes most rookies more than "a few games" to get into the pro game. For every Sam Bradford, there are half a dozen Jimmy Clausens.

according to FBG's latest top 200 going forward he's at WR47 - not rosterable in small leagues and a perma bench in 12 team leagues...The guy has supreme talent just nobody to throw to him.

I only own him in my small league. I just CAN'T bring myself to drop him damnit (probably because of what he's done for me in past years)- but now with the injury I probably should for someone like ERoyal or DHB....

He's gonna miss at least this week, then the bye. I wouldn't be surprised if he misses 7 too. Hopefully Clausen grows up a bit in that time w/o him. I'm thinking he could be a WR3 type again by week 9.

So you're saying it never happens....except when it happens?

I feel so fortunate to have traded Smith last week. I didn't get tons of value, in fact, the trade analyzer had me worsening my team by like .8% or something at the time... but I bet I'm favored now! :excited:

Anyway, if I was still holding Smith, it'd be very hesitant to drop him considering it probably took a 3rd or 4th rounder to get him... but if there was a Eddie Royal or someone putting up similar numbers on the WW, I'd have to be all over that.

Who are you dropping Smith for, seriously? Now, if you are in a really small roster league with a small bench, you may need to, especially if you need wins over the coming two weeks (injury, then bye).

However, you have to think Clausen gets another game experience, then two weeks of practice to get a little better. Smith has three weeks to heal. Thats not a bad recipe for potential success for those who can keep Smith on the roster for a couple dead weeks.

But to my seriously comment, where are you going to find the upside of Steve Smith? Guy is a top ten talent at his position and could end up really helping some teams later in the season and in the playoffs. If anything, you could probably trade for him for a song, although as a Smith owner, I dont see why I'd deal him at his lowest value in years.

gotta stick with him and hope for a good 2nd half if Clausen improves.

when is Otah back? that offense really misses him i think.

Are there any Smith trade rumors going around right now?

I'm a little surprised he hasn't been linked to the Pats yet.

dropped him for Torain in my shallow $ league

Dropped him for Brandon Tate. Smith is unstartable for the next few weeks, I'd rather see what the lottery ticket does.

Any word on his injury at least. I am sitting here with a packed bench and with some really good looking young prospects out there. Is he even worth keeping around at this point? Argggh this is killing me.

New rumors regarding Panthers trading Steve SmithIncarcerated Bob is an infamous NY area radio personality who seems to have his finger on the pulse for breaking NFL rumors. He's reliable enough in fact that today Adam Schefter of ESPN recommended people follow him on Twitter.Well, today Bob has some interesting things to say about the Panthers possibly trading Steve Smith. I will list them here, but follow the link if you want to see his full stream."Carolina Panther WR Steve Smith has told the team he would not be opposed to being moved be4 Oct 19th trade deadline""Several teams would be interested in Smith if Panthers .1)Decide to give up on season 2)Get a 2nd rd pick + additional comp""Miami Dolphins / Redskins / Bears / Chiefs all would be in on trade talks but once again Panthers need to decide in a week"Believe what you will... I'm not personally endorsing these rumors as true, all I'm saying is that the guy has accurately broken stories in the past and is well regarded in the NFL insider community.UPDATE: I asked Darin Gantt if he had heard the above info and he replied "There is no Smitty trade rumor. Nothing to it"

Panthers claim WR Thomas off waivers

CHARLOTTE -- In an ongoing effort to upgrade the worst offense in the league, the Carolina Panthers claimed wide receiver Devin Thomas off waivers from the Washington Redskins Monday.

The 6-foot-2, 218-pound Thomas played collegiately at Michigan State and was selected in the second round of the 2008 NFL draft by the Redskins, but fell out of favor with the team.

He caught 40 passes for 446 yards and three touchdowns in two seasons with the Redskins.

Five weeks into the NFL season, the Panthers rank last in NFL in points per game, total yards, yards per play, passing net yards per play, turnovers and first downs per game.

Thomas is the second receiver the Panthers have claimed in the last week. They previously claimed David Clowney off waivers from the New York Jets. The Panthers now have six wide receivers on the roster.

To make room on the roster for Thomas, offensive lineman Tim Duckworth was waived.

RECORD SETTING DAY: Amidst the ugly defeat Sunday, the Panthers defense actually set a franchise record limiting the Chicago Bears to 29 net passing yards.

NO CHANGES COMING: Despite the team’s 0-5 record, coach John Fox said he doesn’t expect any changes to the coaching staff or the starting lineup.

“No, I think we just have to play better,” Fox said.

So how do the Panthers go about fixing things?

“I think at this stage we've got nowhere to go but up, so we've got plenty to work on,” Fox said. “We'll use this time to freshen up the players as well as get two hard days to improve in areas we need improvement at.”

SOME TIME AWAY: Although the Panthers appear in need of some extra work, Fox will not deviate from his bye schedule in previous seasons. That means the Panthers will practice Wednesday and Thursday and then have a three-day weekend.

Fox said one of the reason for that is the team is so young that many of the rookies will be hitting a wall around Week 8.

EDWARDS PACKAGE: Armanti Edwards saw two snaps at quarterback on Sunday and the net result was a 1-yard gain.

When a reporter asked him about the boost Edwards gave the offense and why he didn’t play more quarterback, Fox replied, “I must have missed that. We had a minus-6 and a (plus-7) play and then he was out.”

That was largely because the Panthers only had two plays in the game plan for Edwards.

When asked if he’s looking to expand the Mountaineer package, Fox replied, “We're looking at all means to move up from 32,” referring to his team’s league ranking on offense.

INJURY UPDATE: Wide receiver Steve Smith was seen walking through the locker room Monday without an air cast on his injured ankle. However, Fox offered no update on Smith’s status.

The same goes for offensive tackle Jeff Otah, who has missed the last five games with a knee injury.

Just picked him up as a WR4 dropping Tate. Wish I found this thread before, haha.

I really wish I knew more about his injury. just got an offer giving me Smitty for S.Holmes.. I like his upside more and worried about Holmes getting 3rd strike and/or not enough passes to be consistent..

Panthers WR Steve Smith (ankle) was back at practice Wednesday after resting up a bit over Carolina's bye week. The Panthers play at San Francisco in Week 7. (Updated 10/20/2010).AnalysisIf Smith can return to action this weekend against the one-win 49ers, he will have QB Matt Moore throwing his way after rookie Jimmy Clausen was benched. Smith has just 13 receptions for 174 yards this season, but will slot right back into the No. 1 WR spot once healthy, so activate him in the majority of formats is he's OK for Sunday.

Steve Smith returns to Panthers practice The Panthers new-old-new QB Matt Moore had some unexpected good news Wednesday, as, WR Steve Smith was back on the practice field. Smith missed the Chicago game after suffering a high ankle sprain at New Orleans. Typically that's a four-week injury (as it was for DE Tyler Brayton) but Smith has traditionally been a quick healer. His return can only help the league's worst offense, which is turning to Moore this week looking for any kind of spark. Otherwise, the bye week seems to have been good for them, as the team is mostly well. There's still no sight of LB Thomas Davis or RT Jeff Otah, but we weren't expecting them. LB Jamar Williams (neck) was out again, as his problem has persisted longer than he thought it would. Also, TE Dante Rosario (knee) was held out.-- Darin Gantt

He can ride the pine unless there's someone better on the WW. With Clausen throwing, he seems to be worthless though.

Meh, i knew he was going to do bad this week. It was a bad matchup and he didn't do well against Saints earlier. However, if you look at the FP allowed by defenses in his upcoming matchups, the only bad matchup he has is against the Steelers and that's in week 16. Assuming Matt Moore gets healthy at some point, he should have at least a couple good games going forward if he stays healthy. If only because he's the last man standing on his team and his talent is not the problem. Worth stashing on your bench, probably not starting though.

Anyone dare try and catch lightning in a bottle with Smitty this week? The WW looks pretty bare and for some reason I am considering this guy. How's that for the Horror?

Profootballtalk.com reports Panthers WR Steve Smith has put his $2.9 million, 10,000 square-foot mansion on the market in North Carolina.
He's as good as gone. Hell, he probably wants outta there. Worthless if he's in Carolina in 2011. Their best move is to draft A. Luck and build around him. Smith won't be in those plans.Love to see him head south to Atlanta.

Does this mean he's retiring (and moving) after the season ends... or that he's outa CAR and moving to a new team? Is he a FA next year? Have to say I'd love to see him on a team with a real QB to see what's left in the tank.

This great news for dynasty owners. I was thinking of dropping him but I'm hanging on to him now and praying he doesn't retire. If he goes to a good QB, he'll have 1 or 2 more fantasy-starting years, IMO.
