CHARLOTTE -- In an ongoing effort to upgrade the worst offense in the league, the Carolina Panthers claimed wide receiver Devin Thomas off waivers from the Washington Redskins Monday.
The 6-foot-2, 218-pound Thomas played collegiately at Michigan State and was selected in the second round of the 2008 NFL draft by the Redskins, but fell out of favor with the team.
He caught 40 passes for 446 yards and three touchdowns in two seasons with the Redskins.
Five weeks into the NFL season, the Panthers rank last in NFL in points per game, total yards, yards per play, passing net yards per play, turnovers and first downs per game.
Thomas is the second receiver the Panthers have claimed in the last week. They previously claimed David Clowney off waivers from the New York Jets. The Panthers now have six wide receivers on the roster.
To make room on the roster for Thomas, offensive lineman Tim Duckworth was waived.
RECORD SETTING DAY: Amidst the ugly defeat Sunday, the Panthers defense actually set a franchise record limiting the Chicago Bears to 29 net passing yards.
NO CHANGES COMING: Despite the team’s 0-5 record, coach John Fox said he doesn’t expect any changes to the coaching staff or the starting lineup.
“No, I think we just have to play better,” Fox said.
So how do the Panthers go about fixing things?
“I think at this stage we've got nowhere to go but up, so we've got plenty to work on,” Fox said. “We'll use this time to freshen up the players as well as get two hard days to improve in areas we need improvement at.”
SOME TIME AWAY: Although the Panthers appear in need of some extra work, Fox will not deviate from his bye schedule in previous seasons. That means the Panthers will practice Wednesday and Thursday and then have a three-day weekend.
Fox said one of the reason for that is the team is so young that many of the rookies will be hitting a wall around Week 8.
EDWARDS PACKAGE: Armanti Edwards saw two snaps at quarterback on Sunday and the net result was a 1-yard gain.
When a reporter asked him about the boost Edwards gave the offense and why he didn’t play more quarterback, Fox replied, “I must have missed that. We had a minus-6 and a (plus-7) play and then he was out.”
That was largely because the Panthers only had two plays in the game plan for Edwards.
When asked if he’s looking to expand the Mountaineer package, Fox replied, “We're looking at all means to move up from 32,” referring to his team’s league ranking on offense.
INJURY UPDATE: Wide receiver Steve Smith was seen walking through the locker room Monday without an air cast on his injured ankle. However, Fox offered no update on Smith’s status.
The same goes for offensive tackle Jeff Otah, who has missed the last five games with a knee injury.
