Steve Smith (Carolina) going forward... (1 Viewer)

I was offered a 1st round next year from the team in my dynasty league that is clearly the #1 seed in the playoffs so far. No way I move Smitty for a 1.10-1.12 rookie pick next year when I'm 99% sure Panthers will have a new QB, and possibly new coach next year. Problem isn't Smitty. Hold and wait. Its all we can do right now.

This doesn't sound like they're trying to fix the situation:

Panthers receiver Steve Smith, who caught one pass for four yards against the Bucs on Sunday, said after the game: "I'm no longer an asset to this team."Smith, who has six career 100-plus yard games against the Bucs, has 21 receptions this season for for 259 yards and no touchdowns this season.Smith is regularly double teamed and the Panthers tried to get him the ball deep twice early in the game. His longest catch of the season has been a 28-yarder against Atlanta."Two guys are committed to him every play," said quarterback Jake Delhomme. "We try to take shots, but it's difficult."

Maybe you're the problem Jake. You no longer can throw "shots". Just awful again yesterday. Soon the Coach and QB will be gone.

I avoided Steve Smith in every league I am in this year, as I thought he was way overvalued, but jeez, I never thought he would be this unproductive. Imagine the numbers this guy could have put up had he had a legitimately great QB throughout all or most of his prime.

I remember 3-4years ago when Chad Johnson was having a miserable year through 6 games and then he LIT it up. The most obvious difference was having Palmer throwing. However, I can't imagine that Delhomme's arm strength has gotten drastically weaker in just 1 year. SS will have good games but I don't think he will deliver like he did in the past and I don't believe this unproductive pace will continue. There are 12 games remaining and things can change. I traded Housh for SS and L. Washington and I'm hoping for the best.

So OK for us Smith owners out there... I guess just keep plugging him in and wait for the big game? He can't go the whole season without scoring can he? In my league, we start 3 WRs - I have Fitz, Smith, Braylon, D. Hester, and Avery. I can't see starting Fitz and two of the other 3 guys at this point...

Count me as officially worried. He is WR #40 in PPR leagues in average points per game. I have him in almost all of my leagues & I will be benching him in several of them.

The market can be "wrong" longer than you can be solvent and Steve Smith can be unproductive for longer than your team has to make the playoffs...

I traded bradshaw and burleson for him. I'm willing to gamble. 12 team league non ppr 2 wrs 2 rbs flex, i have enough rb depth (Williams, Jackson, Moreno, Cadillac, and D. Brown) and i have Colston and D Mason. I may have overpayed, but i don't care, he is a stud and we will see what happens.
Are you KIDDING ME?! I would trade Steve Smith for Burleson and Bradshaw in a heartbeat...

Once again, i'm willing to gamble. Is Burleson going to finish in the top 24 as a reciever in standard formats? I highly doubt it. The guy has had an 1000 yard season once. I like Mason more then him so i have Colston and Mason to cover myself is Smith doesn't turn it around.I don't like losing Bradshaw, but i have more than enough backs to cover myself. So i am trading Burleson who has never had a top 10 season and Bradshaw who will lose goaline carries to Jacobs for Steve Smith. It is a risk i am willing to take.

Well the upcoming schedule is in his favor to get something going:

Carolina wk 7-13

BUF
@ARI
@NO
ATL
MIA
@NYJ
TB

I like to hear that as a Smith owner. At the same time, take a look at the Seattle and Carolina remaining defenses vs WRs: Smith | Burleson06 @TB (30) | ARI (26)07 BUF (4) | BYE08 @ARI (26) | @DAL (25) 09 @NO (12) | DET (28) 10 ATL (7) | @ARI (26) 11 MIA (13) | @MIN (8) 12 @NYJ (5) | @STL (16) 13 TB (30) | SF (20) 14 @NE (14) (COLD) | @HOU (21) 15 MIN (8) | TB (30) 16 @NYG (1) (COLD) | @GB (27) (COLD)I'm telling you - I'd take Burleson straight up for Smith right now. Just me... that Carolina schedule in weeks 14-16 is VICIOUS.

Yea, i don't play head to head so weeks 14-16 have no significance to me. I'm in a total points league.

Anyone know anything about this knee injury he suffered in the game? I read that he came back the next series, but did it look like something that might be more significant?

I'm about to roll the dice and trade for him

I was just on the dolphins forums and a guy said he was listening to sirus radio and there are rumors of Steve Smith to the dolphins. There are also rumors on our boards of us getting Dwayne Bowe so i don't know if it's just our fans hoping we will get a number 1 receiver.

So does anyone start him this week aganst Buf? I have no choice due to bye weeks unless I play Collie or Maclin over him. Think I try one more time. Can't believe how fickle fantasy football is. My league mates groaned when they saw me pull off drafting him in the third to go along with Megatron. I left the draft thinking I stole the greatest starting WRs I had ever drafted :brush:

Smith vents on role with Carolina Steve Smith, WR CARNews: Steve Smith is upset with his role with the Panthers after a one-catch, 4-yard performance in Week 6 at Tampa Bay. Smith let out his frustrations in the locker room, saying, "I'm no longer an asset to this team." Coach John Fox on Monday said he hadn't talked to Smith about his comments, but said the constant double-teams he's faced helped get the running game going. "I can't call the opponent up and ask them not to do that. They get to do what they want," Fox said. "That opens up other things for our football team and gives us an opportunity to win."
Smith is taking a page out of MJD's book and spouting his displeasure to the media. Is there any likelihood Smith has the same results as MJD got the following week.? While they go out of their way to get him touches now even if it means throwing into double teams? Maybe they will use the end around or do whatever to keep Smith happy. I hope so because I agree with Smith, He is no longer relevant in their offense.

It seemed to work for Jennings, who had a lot more looks than the rest of this year and two good red zone looks. He didn't convert yet, but hey at least there's hope now...

Anybody else thinking about trading for him? I'm toying with the idea of offering Moreno for him in my keeper league. I know his production has been awful but if ever there was a time to get a star talent (and Smith is definitely a star talent in my opinion) for well under market value this would appear to be the time.

Not sure how favorable it is...

Buff - 4th

Ari - 31st

NO - 14th

Atl - 21st

Mia - 18th

NYJ - 8th

TB - 11th

I'd say outside the Arizona game it's a push and not exactly a great schedule against the pass.

I'm trying to land him cheap as well as Jacobs, Witten and Sjax.

The problem is few people will really agree to sell him low. Anyone selling is hoping that the buyer is higher on him than his current value and will pay in kind. I've been offered Boldin and Smith for Moss and Harvin...I was told I was NUTS for turning it down.

I cant sell him low for anything. I have RB problems and offered him around the league. Best offer I got was Maroney UGH

I was offered Smith/Sproles for LJ yesterday (verbally)...

He wanted to sleep on it and I'm waiting to hear back from him this morning. If he changed his mind I was going to try and sweeten the deal by throwing in Burleson or Holt... but after thinking about it, I think I might be giving up too much!

It depends on the owner's situation. My league is a one-player keeper league. The Smith owner is done for the year in all probability so Moreno would represent his top potential keeper for next year. For me, Moreno is fourth or fifth on my list of keepers so it comes down to whether I think Smith will rebound and help me this season and whether the Smith owner wants to add a player with potential keeper value. In a straight re-draft, I agree it may be more difficult to get the Smith owner to part with him.

Just pulled it off, except I caved and threw in Holt.Hopefully this gives you guys a good idea of what he's worth these days. I think it's a high risk high reward (not so much high risk at the price I paid though :lmao: ).

Starting him with confidence next week
I don't know how you could be confident at this point. Who are your other options?
:goodposting: This "starting him with confidence" must be schtick!
I just love starting talented players after a dud week (where I won anyway), especially when said player questions his role on the team. I can see them run more screens for him, possibly a running play or two . Sure, I have Santonio on a bye which helps and I totally fabricated my confidence level but I have reason to hope.

I hope you're right, I'm just not sure I have the stones to start him again, ever!

a dud week is one thing...a dud 5 weeks where he's on pace for 67 catches 828 yards and 0 tds is another....that being said I'm shooting out lowball offers in hopes of a bite.

FWIW - Just dealt MSW for Smith, partially desperation driven move on my part to cover for the bye week jam I have at the moment, but just wanted to let people know what's possible. It's a .5 ppr redraft.

You'd rather have Smith than MSW? That's quite interesting.

Actually, I think he got the better end of the deal on a player for player basis. Some other factors on why I did it: I needed to cover for some severe bye week issues and I am also buying a lottery ticket in hoping Smith's temper tantrum this week gets him some more opportunities in the future. I also have Garrard and MJD on the same team, so rolling out three Jags on a weekly basis wasn't exactly thrilling to me, especially after the Seattle fiasco. Sounds funny to say that Sims Walker for Smith would sound so lopsided in favor of MSW after six weeks, but that's how far Smith has fallen in less than half a season. Just wanted to let people know a deal that worked to acquire Smith, sorry for the slight hijack.

I can appreciate the reservations about starting three Jags but I think the Seattle fiasco was due in large part to Sims-Walker being suspended. If he had been active, I think the Jags would have done a lot better.

Was just offered Smith for Donald Brown and Hakim Nicks from the Addai owner. Thinking about it....I currently have Boldin, Welker, Braylon, Harvin, and Austin in a start 3 so Nicks is probably expendable. I'm currently 1 - 5 so need to roll the dice at this point. Smith might be just the guy.

I traded L. Washington, M. Bush, and Heap for S. Smith and Witten.

Oakland is a mess and Witten is just as good or better than Heap right now but with bigger upside. I will miss Washington, but I had to give up something.

Yep, and I would have, too. :sadbanana:

I'm not going to drop Smith, but I am benching him as soon as my bye weeks are over. I have Welker, Manningham, and Simms-Walker (start 3 WR and have 4 WR on our roster). Each one of them has by far out-performed Smith. I am not ready to drop him though.

I offered Tory Holt and Hakeem Nicks for Smith and was rejected. I wouldn't consider sweetening the deal as I believe this is more than fair given Smith's production to date. Smith at this point is no more than a roll of the dice. Seems to me many owners would rather live or die with Smith, rather than accept less than ideal value for a wr taken by many in the 2nd round.

Would be interested to know what Smith owners think of above offer.

PS, I have MSW and wouldn't even consider dealing him for Smith.

Its basically Nicks for Smith. I dont think Id accept that but Id def think about it.
