Steve Smith (Carolina) going forward... (1 Viewer)

Kind of sad to think about the game SS could have had with a real QB. The throw to his feet at the 4 could have been a TD...multiple over/under throws...a shame that this is a weekly gut check vs. a no brainer.
Agreed. It's totally not Steve's fault, but I just never feel comfortable putting him in my starting lineup anymore. Last night's game was another ulcer-inducing gimmick until that late TD. I've been attempting to deal him for a while. Hopefully, the last two weeks with 3 TDs makes some of the WR-poor teams in the league I own him rise to the bait. Even if he winds up being productive the rest of the way, I'm over having to rely on Delhomme getting him the ball.
I traded Steve Smith, Cincy D, and Portis for Ricky and Lynch on Tuesay night (before word broke out about Ronnie being placed on IR).You should be able to land a decent RB for Steve right now, expecially after his nice littlle TD run. Target an owner that wasn't able to watch the game last night (since it was only on NFL network). Sometimes people just look at the stat line on NFL.com and don't pay attention to how they players looked during the game. Delhomme couldn't lead a HS team to victory right now.
In my 12 team PPR league he was the in the top 12 WRs in two of the past three weeks before last nights game . Add to that, this week he has his second highest scoring output of the year. From a fantasy standpoint I don't care if Delhomme couldn't lead a HS team, Smith is now putting up WR1 numbers. Maybe not the top 5 numbers some hoped for, but WR1 numbers none the less. Why would you want to trade that for a "decent" RB?

I don't, and that's why he's still on that team for me. I'm expecting more than "decent", I'm expecting "equal value." Problem there is that most owners only focus on the "He's done/he's got Delhomme as his QB/he stinks" type stuff and don't want to rub up against "equal value." Even the multiple TDs last week generated no more than a "I'll think about it" kind of a response to any offers I made. With two good games strung together now perhaps someone will change their tune. I expect he gets Revis'd next week, so I'll be shopping him heavily before that game. If he puts up a subpar effort there, I'll probably just be keeping him.I won't give him away for nothing, but that said, he's still a headache to own/put in the lineup most weeks. When I start him, I'm basically expecting nothing and praying for more because of who is throwing him the ball. Lately he's rewarded me, but it wasn't a very smooth ride. Again.....it took Steve pulling a circus catch TD out of his posterior to not wind up having another "meh" game last night in non-PPR. Delhomme missed him on another TD earlier too. Steve got his in the end, but his owners had to sweat it for most of the night/curse about Delhomme not allowing him to have an even bigger game.Outside of the Bucs in a couple weeks, I'm not exactly champing at the bit about his remaining schedule either(and the Bucs are the team that nearly goose egged him earlier this year).

I have both Jennings and Smith - I've almost packaged them successfully at times, but no cigar. For the most part, with guys like these you have to accept living with their under-performing selves unless you're in a trade-happy league or are a master tradesman. I'm not... Jennings is a lost cause. I'm glad that Steve Smith is coming around. He and V-Jax will hopefully hold down the receiver corps with Austin backing them up and Jennings sucking bench with his backside.

Thoughts on Smith's chances of success Sunday night at home against the Vikes?

Palmer could do almost nothing against them last week. Hard for me to envison Matt Moore doing well.

Agree - This is a REALLY tough call. I have Austin as a start. It's then between Steve Smith, VJax (vs CIN), Jennings (@PIT), and Antonio Bryant. I'm just completely flummoxed.

Sometimes it's easier to assess other people's situations from the outside looking in.To me, your decision is pretty easy. Jackson all the way.I have one flex spot open, and I gotta decide bewteen Vince Young (if healthy), Mendenhall, Felix or Smitty.

I'm having a tough time envisioning Moore doing anything against Minnesota, and could easily see Smith ending with a 3-25 game. Strongly considering gambling on Bowe in his first game back instead.

Minnesota is not a great road team, and this could be a semi-trappy game for them. I wouldn't rule out Steve Smith having a decent game. With that being said, in a TD heavy league I'm faced w/ deciding between Bryant, H Ward, Driver, Steve Smith, & Collie (have to play 3). My first instinct is just to stick with Ward, Driver, & Steve Smith. After all, Smith did score last week w/ 80+ yards and got 80+ yards the week before too. Any word on Delhomme coming back?

Re: the headline, if you have Carolina's Steve Smith and haven't panicked by now, you probably are inside a coffin.

I don't trust Smith (or should I say Moore and Carolina) at all, Minnesota is going to completely shutdown the Panthers. Will probably bench Smith for Meacham...only debate is because I have to drop someone to make room for Meach.

Agreed The question is what level of WR would be worth starting him over?Bernard Berrian?Antonio Bryant?Derrick Mason?

I'd prob start Mason over him, especially in PPR. I'd roll the dice with Smith vs the other two.

Have you witnessed the Steelers defensive backfield lately? Start Jennings.
I actually have this same dilemma (Smith vs Jennings) and I am leaning towards Jennings as well due to the PIT DBs being horrendous of late. Jennings is kind of due too, which might not be a great argument but it makes me feel like everything could be aligning this week for Jennings being a solid start.

I'm considering starting Houshmandzadeh over Smith despite his terrible performance over the last 3 weeks. Maybe Burleson being banged will give TJ those targets?

But I do agree, with Winfield back I don't believe Smith will get anything going against the Vikes.

I would rate them VY, Smitty, Mendenhall, Felix. The Packers are #2 in the league vs the run. Their Dline is a bit banged up right now, but that didn't make any difference for the Bear game last week. The last 100 yard rusher vs the Pack was SJax week 3. Since then they have done a very good job stopping Frank Gore, Ray Rice, Kevin Smith, Matt Forte, Dallas RBs etc.

Everything probably is.- Steelers DBs are reeling and the two rookies may see more time.

- More than a couple players(if not most) seem to have folded their tents on D.

- It seems very unlikely Polamalu plays.

- Pittsburgh's pass rush has been "meh" the last few games as well, also in part because I think some guys on D have stopped giving a crap, so that'll potentially give Rodgers more time.

I'm a Steeler fan, and I hope to Christ I'm wrong, but I won't be surprised if they're in for a beatdown this week. This defense as a whole just does not look like it cares at ALL anymore. They've got three or four guys who still are playing their a@#$es off, but that's about it. The rest are ready to hit the golf course.

Just checked Steve Smith's last 4 home games (CAR plays at home in primetime vs MIN this week)

vs TB on 12/06: 78 yards/0 TD's

vs. MIA on 11/19: 87 yards/1 TD

vs. ATL on 11/15: 34 yards/2 TD's

vs. BUF on 10/25: 99 yards/0 TD's

So, an average of 74.5 yards and .75 TD's/game in the last 4. The October 11th game against WASH (top rated pass D) he got 65 yards rec and no TD.

Here are the reasons I think Steve Smith is a decent play this week (WR 18-20 range overall):

1) The game is in primetime. Smith loves the spotlight.

2) The Vikings will score points, which will mean the Panthers will likely be playing from behind throw often and will likely force the ball to Smith. I suspect we will see 35 or more passes thrown.

3) In the last 4 home games, he hasn't had any "clunkers"

Plus, Delhomme may start this game (possibly back at practice Wednesday), which I think gives a boost to Smith's numbers if he's the starter as he locks in on him.

I will be starting Smith this week, but only because I don't have any other legitimate options.

As noted, Minnesota is right in the middle of the pack from the pass D standpoint, as their strength is really in their front 7.

Despite the QB woes, Smith is still ranked 12th in targets this year and I think that Carolina really wants to get him the ball even more than some of the guys ahead of him on that list (Housh, Holmes, Wayne, the other Steve Smith). I kind of look at him like the main RB on a bad team: in terms of total points, he may not be a gamebreaker, but you know that he will get plenty of chances, which should at least lead to some production.

Losing Otah on the o-line wont help matters, but I'm barely clinging to my decision to play Stevie over Collie tomorrow in a TD-heavy league.

I'm seriously giving thought to starting Braylon Edwards over Steve Smith this week
Im not going to say anything to cause a karmic effect... but ... are you in consolation bracket?
Nope...#2 seed; had a first round bye. My other 2 starters are Greg Jennings & Anquan Boldin. My choice at #3 WR is between Steve Smith, Percy Harvin, & Braylon Edwards

Winfield looked good last week, a minimal Car rushing game against that Minn rush D, and now Otah going down.....I don't like this matchup, but after Rice and Jennings I have to start Smith (over MSW and an injured Burleson). Eek!!

(*Crosses fingers and hopes for another 40 yard TD bomb*)

Cheers.

Matt Moore 5 starts (2007=3, 2009=2).

Steve Smith

8-72

9-137-1

5-48 (wk 17, no 4th quarter targets)

3-78

2-83-1

----------

5.4 catches

83.6 yards

0.40% TD

Minnesota is right in the middle of the pack as a defense vs WRs, #16.

On the road they are far worse at defending WRs, #28, compared to league averages.
This post convinced me to leave him in my lineup this week. Thanks!

OK, what about Smith's chances for week 16? I'm still haunted by epic Week 16 duds in previous years.

He's certainly heating up and Moore has salvaged his season, but I have no idea which NYG defense to expect next week, the one that swallowed the Redskins whole tonight or that gave up 45 to the Eagles a week ago. I'm leaning towards a subpar performance by Carolina next week. What are you guys doing with Smith in your championship games?

The Giants secondary is nothing to fear especially with Ross and Webster gimpy although I expect Terrell Thomas to be locked on Smith and Thomas has played well. The main threat (outside of the swirling winds of the meadowlands) is the Giants rediscovered pass rush with the Panthers sporting two backup OTs. Having said that if they can handle the Viking DL the backups may be pretty solid.I'd say if the Panthers establish the run to make the Giants pass rushers play an honest game Smith can have another good game.
