Stock Thread (6 Viewers)

Might be a good time to hop in on GAN getting pummeled today after their earnings report was released.  Seems a bit drastic as they are in a fast growing industry and have a decent piece of it.

I don’t think retail will ever go away, but I do agree it’s going to consolidate. I also think e-commerce will continue to grow. I pretty much buy from Costco, Target, Lowe’s and Amazon. I’ve ordered way more online than I ever did and I’m not going back. It’s so damn convenient and easy and as a father of 3, it saves a ton of time. I 100% disagree that I will stop ordering online or order less. I think I’ll go out to eat more but to shop? No. I’ll still hit up my Costco and Target, but I never stopped doing that except I do love the Target online pickup. I’m in and out of the parking lot in a minute. I do think the big guys are benefiting greatly and will likely be the ones who keep benefiting.

Also, the roaring 20s didn’t start with a crash, it ended with one. So, maybe pull your money out of the market in late 2028.
Yeah, this is me. Can't imagine buying all online though. I like walking through the stores sometimes.

I definitely would never buy all online as I’m the same (love my Costco) but would I take a 30 minute drive to find a still open GameStop or go to Ace Hardware or go to Best Buy? Very unlikely if I can download the game (my kids download everything now) or order something on Amazon and have it placed at the door. If it’s at Costco, then I buy it there. Anything else is fair game for online.

I wouldn't say I was anti-online, just seemed more convenient to shop in person when I was out and get exactly what I wanted and not have to risk taking something to the post office for a return.  Amazon made returns so easy. Don't even need a box, print a piece of paper and drop it off at Kohl's.  I do wonder what Bezos does with all the crap he gets back.  Come to think of it, maybe this is why the stock sucks so bad.

Lol. I use Kohl’s as well. Way easier than boxing and shipping it back. I don’t really return much but I’d think it gets charged back to the 3rd party or to them. The stock is what it is, they are considered tech so this downturn/rotation is hitting them but not as much because they also have a huge retail arm and are growing a lot.

Mostly agree. My other thing is that I love walking through Target and Lowe's because lots of time I'll see something I need. Not really an impulse decision, more of a reminder of a need I forgot. That just doesn't work online.

Thoughts on RBLX?  It's dipped below $66 today, thinking that might be a good entry point for what I would plan to be at least an intermediate term hold.

No disrespect, but this post only shows to me that you do not understand the gaming industry nor its consumers.
With all respect I'd be surprised if I wasn't the biggest gamer in here.  I've owned every console the last 30 years and still play every night 2-3 hours, and have 2 kids that now game.  I'm also almost certain I'm the only person on this forum that's ever been a part of an e-sports team that was paid to play (Tribes 2 was my game).

How about this parallel - why does Best Buy exist?  Why do we need a physical store to sell electronics?
I'm not sure why retail still existing would be a bull case for a store whose stock mechanics have led it to be currently worth 1000% more than it was worth when retail was at its absolute peak.  GME has peaked at $55 over the years during retail's best days and was in the 20's most of the time.

The only things that have changed since this was a $7 stock at the end of last year are...

1) Mechanics/squeeze

2) Hiring of Ryan Cohen

Now #2 is a good thing, but not worth a 3500% increase which is how much the stock has increased since his hiring.  If you're buying on fundamentals right now, you're buying a $30 stock that costs $250 because of the mechanics of it.

Not trying to be some GME hater here.  If you'll recall during the first squeeze I was the #1 supporter of GME in this thread before Dodds even found his way back in here.  And I still believe it would have run into the thousands were it not for the brokers screwing everyone.

But fundamentals, c'mon.  If someone wanted to play a hail marry on that front betting on Cohen when it was priced fairly then fine, but right now if that's why you're trading it you're already paying a big chunk of its fundamental upside because of the mechanics.

"I like the stock" wouldn't be a meme if people were buying it because they ACTUALLY like the stock.

I don't like telling this story, but I will because Dodds is a pretty sharp cookie. I think he knows what he's doing.

10 years ago, Dodds was pimping NVDA here. I liked the stock, had a few bucks, was home watching the market regularly while on paternity leave. I bought 500 shares at $23. Damn thing went down into the teens. Dodds didn't panic. But I was sweating, stressing, etc. Within months, the stock got back to $23 and I sold it at my first opportunity.

NVDA went on a nice run after that. $40, $60, $100...

It's a $500 stock today.

I wasnt paid but my CS clan was 2nd place OGL East - Open Bracket

I handed a 40k check (the big, prize, fake kind) to a Russian that didnt speak a lick of Engrish but never-the-less who won the Quakecon 1v1 Q3 tournament.

I toured id software (before it was bought by Bethesda).  Very sweet setup.

I have my name in the credits for a very popular (now old) FPS

TAKE THAT!!

PS - console kids arent real gamers 🖤

The secret with that sometimes is to just order it when you think about it the first time. Or just stop smoking so much weed so you don’t forget so much! I actually have a GroceryIQ app that I’ve had for years, probably one of those free apps at the time. I have lists for all my stores and I just make sure I add things as soon as I think of them. Helps a ton, especially for a big place like Costco.

Again, not saying I order everything online but I do it a lot more than I did and I plan to keep doing it.

I really like this conversation on retail - I think the outcome will be part of the new definition of humanity (online vs in-person).

Can we all agree that home improvement stores arent going away?  No one is going to buy their lumber from Bezos the Builder right?

Pharmacy - is that starying around?  I think most drug stores are way bloated and should be Rx specific.  However, some people seem to love their Walgreens and Rite Aid deal shoppers.

Is Barnes and Noble going to make it?  I would have bet a bunch against them, but while they arent killing it it by any stretch, they seem to be afloat (for now).  Do people really want to give up this experience?

I think movie theaters are the real interesting one here.  Some people LOVE the movie theater experience.  I am not one of them.  Also, the real-estate is super expensive.  This is why Im not on-board with the AMC stonk crazy.  Its just too darn expensive.  Also, the price-tag for my family of 5 to have a 2-3 hour total experience is wicked expensive.  The bad part about movie theatres is that I think they will make it, but upstream the movie producers and publishers will take an overall hit.

Volume on GME is crazy high today.  That should be a good sign.  Based on early activity I'm still 🚅 (only bull emoji I could find) on $240.  The afternoon lull is getting attacked but I refuse to believe anyone is selling.  Who would sell at $200 who didnt sell at $180 who didnt sell at $200?

I am with you on that one.  In the days where a 75" TV is $499 and an impressive sound system is roughly the same, I have zero interest in ever going to a movie theater again, especially when you consider the whole laundry list of other advantages watching at home has (booze/food, pee breaks, etc).

I would much rather everything just release straight to streaming.

On the flipside I realize the only thing it "costs" me to let the theater goers have their fun is a little bit of patience, since those movies will hit streaming services anyways a few months later.  So on that front I'm fine if they stick around, but it's doubtful I'll be giving them much/any of my money.  The only reason I'd ever go to the theaters anymore is if it was a movie I just couldn't wait a few months to see or wanted to make sure wasn't spoiled (IE Endgame).

Movie theaters would die if all movies were available on streaming at the same time. It’s not that there aren’t people who like it. I do like seeing a blockbuster on a huge screen but is it something I dearly miss, no and as you said it’s not a cheap experience anymore.

Barnes & Noble will hang around for the die hard traded but it’s not really an investable experience anymore.

Big boxes will always be here and likely keep growing. I think it’s the little specialty stores and stuff like malls that will just lessen. Malls might be one of the last places I enjoy going but they’ll still be around, just not the destination or first choice that they were before. I think big boxes and online are the first choices and the rest will be when needed.

The good news is we are going to start getting real data on the "straight to streaming" for new movies.  Amazon has been doing it for some but not all.  My guess, based on the the sole fact that not all movies went straight to streaming and that they are in-fact holding some back, leads me to believe straight to streaming is not nearly as profitable.  I mean, if it was a slam dunk, every publisher would be releasing their movies ASAP and begging Amazon and Netflix to push them out.  In a few months Im guessing they will start publishing some data, but my guess is people arent too hot on it.  Color me surprised on it though.

There is some irony in Roblox and GameStop being discussed concurrently in here right now. Roblox is certainly a threat the entire model of consoles and games. I can only speak to what goes on around me, and I won’t be surprised if the 6-10 year old demographic never gives up the iPad gaming for a controller and a TV. I have no idea what that means for GameStop, but I think it’s more likely that if Roblox fails it’s because others copy their model than because kids switch back to Xbox/PS/etc.  The idea of having your user base constantly releasing new games on your platform is probably nothing others can’t do, Roblox just has a massive head start on user base.
Also, you already see games on Xbox that are free with in game purchases.  I assume it’s bad for GameStop if the default model for selling games is make them free, but .99 cents if you want the good gun.  This is piggy backing off Roblox and even before that, iPad apps.  Even the biggest sellers, we may see a day soon where Fifa 22 is free to download, but costs money for FUT packs and other items.

Those are consoles ;)

Unless you didnt have to install your sound card yourself, configure your DMA, IRQ, and IO range then you arent a real gamer 💞
I know, that was my point.

Get out of here with that Greek in your second sentence and while you’re at it get off my lawn!  Why is that damn music so loud!

I didnt touch on malls but they are certainly dead at the moment.  I was a mall-rat growing up so I loved them to go and hang out, mack on the ladies, and get into debauchery.  However, Im not sure I see them around any more.  Who wants to go into to one?  Why would they need to?

The history of need is the "one parking spot stop for all your shopping needs".  Go to the mall for a few hours and do some "shopping".  Maybe people still want that, but the last 100x I went into a mall was to get to the Apple store or ... wait for it ... Gamestop.  I guess clothes shopping maybe, but only if my wife was dragging me.  Now Im a TJX shopper (another great long stock).

What I dont understand is that if malls dont make it, what do we do with the real estate?  What happens to all of that developed property?  Housing?  Re-purposing?  Thats the part I do not get.  If I went out on a very long limb, if you could take 1/2 a mall and turn it into senior living, then take the other half and gear it to "hanging out with the grandparents" I think it could be an interesting experience.  I mean, we are only getting more and more old people.  They arent going to live at home forever and we know we dont want them living with us.  However, we will want to offer them something more than a simple retirement home.  A place they can go and live, be human.  :2cents:

Good points.  RBLX and GME are somewhat competitive in the gaming landscape.  One is in-person and one is completely virtual.

Im in the camp that at some level people still want to touch and feel a lot of their shopping experience.

I would also like to add there is a difference between screen and TV gaming.  For example, RBLX will not really be played on your living room TV.  RBLX is more of a single user experience with millions online.  The Nintendo model is opposite.  Nintendo is very much about the family experience at the family TV.  Yes, it does support millions online but unlike RBLX it was designed for an in-person social experience.
