Yeah. That was bad.

I don't think the rules it set up were ever maintained, in terms of seeing vs not seeing. And I never bought what they could do whole not seeing. The cast did fine but the writing (story line, not dialogue) never gave anybody much of a chance. Really bad.
Agreed.

I did like the origin story more, but the river run was cringe worthy. Riding the rapids and nobody dies or is even hurt? Bullock was good as the rest of the cast, but crap story

I found myself asking questions the whole time about what level of seeing prompted the affliction. They all saw the same stuff on the street early on. And then windows would be unblocked but apparently not an issue as long as they were inside...until it was an issue. And how do you explore an interior while blindfolded and know it was clear to open your eyes? Not even taking into account how you survive for 5 years without anything without being able to see...farming/gardening? gtfo. And of course TWD question of gas going bad. And of course being on a boat on an active river blindfolded. Rowing...where without seeing? A giant community existing how for 5 years without seeing? It just goes on and on.

It is comparable to The Happening in a universe where The Happening was a good movie with good acting, plotting, and suspense driven narrative. It is closer to A Quiet Place. I kind of liked this movie better.
Wow.  I get the comparison of Birdbox to A Quiet Place,  I think it's natural.  However, Birdbox can't hold Quiet's jock.  But A Quiet Place is also a masterpiece that has to be experienced in a theater full of people to fully understand it's meta qualities.  Not to mention that Birdbox's premise is wholly implausible, even in comparison.

I enjoyed Springsteen on Broadway.

I suppose you have to like Springsteen, but his broadway show just ended.  This was taped last summer.  Its 2.5 hours long - typical Springsteen concert - lots of story-telling,  with some songs mixed in - but in a very intimate setting - mostly just Springsteen on an acoustic guitar or piano.  Patti Scialfa joins him for a couple of songs.

ETA - I guess the broadway show is loosely based on his book "Born to Run"

the people at the end were blind

Finally got around to watching Black Panther. I thought it was decent to pretty good. But the reviews on it made it out like it was a one once in a generation type movie. Didn't come close to living up to the hype for me.
Funny. I just compared this to Crazy Rich Asians in the other movie thread.

I agree with you about the movie - when you just separate the movie itself. It was solid.

But, of course, there's tons of cultural significance to both BP and CRA. And that's really why people were so excited about both. And that's totally understandable.

Sunderland Til I Die: fantastic docuseries that tells the story of an iconic English football club’s first season (2017-18) after being relegated (demoted) from the top pro league. The team continues tp struggle. The series focuses a lot on the reactions of the working class fanbase and support staff and less so on the players which I think is unique. Highly recommend.

That was the key, the cultural significance. TBH no critic could ever say anything bad about BP without a backlash. I thought it was good but not nearly as good as the hype.

I never saw CRA so one movie that I’d compare to BP in terms of the ratings hype due to content versus pure movie goodness is Boogie Nights. Weird comparison I know and BP was better, but I was completely underwhelmed by Boogie Nights and it got Oscar consideration. Obviously, it had to be about porn but the movie wasn’t good it just got controversial subject matter hype.

Regardless of the subject matter, many people (including myself) think Boogie Nights is a great movie.

Lots of people think BP was amazing as well. I didn’t say Boogie Nights or BP were bad, but I was underwhelmed based on the hype and ratings both had gotten and a big part of that IMHO was just due to the subject matter. Personally, I thought Wonder Woman was better than BP even though it got so much notoriety due to a femal super hero as a lead. It got some credit for that but also was a great movie regardless of that.

I like to enjoy my movies without trying to poke holes in them because everything isn't exactly perfect. Every movie would be 12 hours long to get in every little detail.

That's nice. I'll let things slide until i can't. This one was chock full o' cant- really bad.

It's like the walking dead for me. I don't care if things are goofy or crazy, as long as they make some kind of sense within whatever rules are set up in that world. No sense was to be had here. Like TWD, "it's about zombies" doesn't explain away terrible writing.

I emvy the people who don't think, and can just enjoy the flashing lights...that's never been me, going back to being a young kid.

Started watching Trotsky, it is in Russian with subtitles.   Told through flashbacks from Trotsky's last days in Mexico.  It is interesting if you like dramatized history and Trotsky was an interesting guy for sure.  Also getting a Russian perspective on him is cool.  Not all of it is great acting / writing/ directing but the actors for Trotsky and his wife are good. Worth a try for a few if the subject is interesting to you.

Crazy Rich Asians was a standard Rom-Com. I did enjoy it and the cast was good. But it was a pretty standard rom-com formula movie

Pretty much. I'd say the same for BP to an extent too. Both build on the formula for their genres and make their own. I'm sure there are nuances to the storytelling that are culturally distinct. They're both fun films though and worth watching.

"Killing Eve" on Hulu now. Good but not great. Sandra Oh and Jodi Cormer are great leads in this. It's fun, quick paced and solid for its 8 episodes arc. Cormer, in particular, seems to be enjoying herself.
It's worth the watch, but agree that it doesn't elevate to upper tier in spite of the good performances.

It never seemed to ratchet the tension but I'm not sure it was going for "tense". We're so conditioned to believe assassins, spies, and other general skullduggery but this is instead something of a lark.

Bird Box was the 2018 version of Blair Witch Project.  I found that my level of care over anyone living or dying was zero.  No depth to the back story of the evil was explained one bit. No reasons really gone over as to why some were joiners vs red shirts (trying to keep it spoiler free).

I was expecting more for all the buzz this movie seemed to create.

The "buzz" it's getting its all social media/meme driven and really has nothing to do with the quality of the movie.

Saw a couple other Netflix movies over the break...

Lol. I've forgotten both names.

One is post apocalyptic, with Mimi Rogers and some young disneyish starlet who's pretty pretty. It's bad. I think I kept going with it hoping to see any boobs- even elder Mimi's. None were to be had.

Other is a doc about a Polish artist rediscovered in SoCal in the 70s by some young guy. Interesting story, and I'm always a sucker for docs about so-called artistic genius. Even though I didn't love the art, I loved the guys drive and self-assured arrogance about his work. Schulkin? Something like that. DiCaprio's dad is in it and part of the group that rediscovered the guy.

Kind of.  But it's got a supernatural element to it, a decent amount of nudity, and good production values.  I'm not 100% sold on the plot yet but the lead chick's bewbs are insane.
OK I took the bait on thinking this was an entertaining show with " a decent amount of nudity".  After a few episodes I have been enamored with the blonde and her braless scenes but only 1 brief set of bewbs???  The show does not have enough substance to make up for the lack of bewbs.

Stay with it.  The bewbs pick up later in the seasons. And the blonde's bewbs are magical.
