I was expecting a little better given the hype.
I would agree. I wasn't 100% sold on the connection between the main characters. It was constructed a little bit too hastily perhaps.
It's another one like Patriot that suffers a bit from being unclear in tone. bizarro screwball to action drama extremes needs a lot of finesse to make work.

that said, I ultimately liked both- even if both are flawed.

Just in time for all the New Year's resolutions:

Tidying up with Maria Kondo

Watched one episode - it sparked a little joy.  (not enough to get me started, but at least think about...)

ETA - had no idea she really does not speak English, but definitely some helpful hints/suggestions on how to get rid of clutter

Anyone else here watched Watership Down? I'm 1.5 episodes in.
Yes. Been waiting to watch it and actually started watching with the kids last night.

It's still very dark, but I've got significant memories of that movie as a kid and it's one of those that holds a special spot for some reason.

Kids are actually enjoying it after 2 episodes. I think it's well done.

How old are your kids? I don't have any of my own, but I was thinking last night when watching that my step-daughter at 8 (many years ago) would probably have not enjoyed some of the more violent scenes I've seen so far. She was incredibly sensitive to that kind of stuff back then, though.

Now she's a journalist,is going for a law degree, and is tough as nails.

Wow.  I get the comparison of Birdbox to A Quiet Place,  I think it's natural.  However, Birdbox can't hold Quiet's jock.  But A Quiet Place is also a masterpiece that has to be experienced in a theater full of people to fully understand it's meta qualities.  Not to mention that Birdbox's premise is wholly implausible, even in comparison.
Quietest movie experience ever. Couldn't even eat my popcorn.

Yea, it built and magnified the connection to the characters and what they were facing increasing the empathy for them.  Not sure I've ever experienced anything like it.  Bet you tore into that popcorn ravenously during the waterfall scene.

Mixed emotions with Bird Box. Started really strong. But didn't care for the ending. After reading how the book ended, I would have "enjoyed" that more.

All I wanted was an explanation of why "Team B" was immune sort of speak.

is team b bullock and co (since they all saw the same stuff at the beginning before going inside) or the crazies?

Really enjoying "Homecoming" on AP. Julia is perfectly fine in this - maybe some of the best work she's done in years - but really it's all about Esmail. If you liked S1 of "Mr Robot" then you'll enjoy this. It's a masterclass, imo, in the efficient storytelling. I'm 4 episodes in - roughly halfway through the series - and it's just terrific. all the little touches - sound design, music, camerawork - are throwbacks to a style of storytelling, moviemaking that you don't see much anymore. Made me think of classics from Schlesinger, Pakula, and the occasional TV show episode from the 70's.

I gave up after feeling like it wasn't going anywhere. "Efficient" isn't how I'd ever describe the story telling here, even though as you say, the craft is top notch.

oh see, for me, i can see things being constructed or coming into focus in the episodes. this is especially evident in the short form (30 mins) format. it's tidy and a thrilling bit of storytelling for me.

I concur that it reveals a bit each episode. but still feels looong getting to any of it to me- even though only 30mins. I think I caved after 4 or so eps.

I'm half way through the latest season of Travelers and enjoying it more then last season.. Last season was confusing at times with all the different timelines... I am enjoying the "slower" pace this season..

Really thought the two episodes revolving are kids(Romanian hunter and AI gone rouge )  were done exceptionally well.

I was thinking about the show the other day... and I think both of those episodes ended as essentially reboots. which is interesting in retrospect, even if I thought they were wastes of time during.

The family is looking forward to Season 3 of A Series of Unfortunate Events.

I usually find myself laughing out loud every episode at something Count Olaf says or does.  Neil Patrick-Harris is phenomenal in that role.  I think the whole show is top notch and my entire family loves it.

I need a show to watch with my kids.  Something that will still hold the attention of a 14 year old boy but isn't too much for an 8 year old girl.  What kind of violence in this?  Just the dogs eating the rabbits?

Anyone else have any suggestions?

That was probably the worst, though one character gets shot and another gets caught in a wire trap. Also some rabbit-on-rabbit fightin'. Oh, and some dream sequences. If you've seen the 1978 animated version, this one's no worse than that.

I thought it was pretty good, not great, but YMMV. The CGI was a little distracting and too many of the rabbits looked alike so it was hard to tell them apart. They have a murderers' row of actors providing voices.

stranger things? how old are the younger kid(s)?

eta:   8. right. we started to watch it a bit with our 7yo... I think she chose on her own not to watch, even though she's brave with scarier things. might depend on your 8yo.

Way too scary for my 8 year old.

Then Series of Unfortunate Events is a good option, IMO.  My 12-yr old son stays engaged and enjoys them.
I agree with this.   My 12 year old daughter enjoys it and an even older kid may pick up on some of the sneaky one liners.  The writing is really good for a family show.

I really enjoy the show with my kids and Neil Patrick Harris kills it like Jayrod said.

My son loves the cooking shows like MasterChef, MasterChef Jr and Nailed It. He likes Futurama and Bob's Burgers a lot too. Have you tried any of those?

John Hurt's reedy English voice is so closely connected with the story for me. I saw the original, in the theater no less, as a child and loved it. I saw it again in my early 20s and ready the novel even. Hard for me to imagine another actor doing it.

I remember reading the book and then seeing the movie in the theaters, like you. loved it. remember lots of blood. haven't seen it since.

I enjoyed Springsteen on Broadway.

I suppose you have to like Springsteen, but his broadway show just ended.  This was taped last summer.  Its 2.5 hours long - typical Springsteen concert - lots of story-telling,  with some songs mixed in - but in a very intimate setting - mostly just Springsteen on an acoustic guitar or piano.  Patti Scialfa joins him for a couple of songs.

ETA - I guess the broadway show is loosely based on his book "Born to Run"
Its completely built around the book. A lot of the stories are told word for word.

Probably already discussed earlier but The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix rules. May be the best Netflix series yet.

Pretty good, but I thought it tailed off.

It seems to start as a haunted house story with good family drama at it's core then moves to a family drama with a couple random jump scares thrown in and I started losing interest in the last 1/3 of the season.

The other night I watched Cargo.  I am pretty sure it's a Netflix original movie. It's a ####ed up Aussie zombie/post-apocalypse movie with Martin Freeman as the star.  Some good ideas and scenes in it, but it got a bit, uh, interesting towards the end.  Probably just for the horror junkies, not the mainstream watchers.

The Last Kingdom was one of my favorite shows ever (that I've streamed), top 2-3. I like Vikings almost as much, and wouldn't fault anyone who said it is better. I like well done historical dramas.
Late to the party, but agree.  The Last Kingdom was/is very enjoyable.  Top 2-3 is about right.  Characters with depth.  Good treatment of the Danes.

I now call my 2-yr-old male golden retriever "Arseling".

I’ve been saving the 3rd season for when I can “savor” it. I much prefer bingeing shows I like rather than hitting them piecemeal. So getting some “lesser” shows, that I liked but not quite as much, out of the way (e.g “Frontier”-just not getting into S3 as much as the first 2 seasons). Plus, I’m a little “Viking’ed” out after watching all 5(?) seasons of “Vikings” in the last year. Still, I’m really looking forward to watching S3 of The Last Kingdom. Saving the best for last I guess.

I also kind of liked the 2 seasons of “Marco Polo” I watched based on son’s recommendation, but I guess that didn’t get renewed.
