We finished it a few weeks ago. Good show. Not sure if I would have stuck with it if not for the parents, mostly the father, but it's still worth checking out.
Paul Sun-Hyung Lee is easily the best part of the show. Best part is, IRL, he doesnt even have a Korean accent.

I recently decided to give Breaking Bad a re-watch. I rarely will watch a movie or series multiple times but was getting tired of the "OK" shows so fired it up once again.  Have to say it is SO GOOD. I've watched countless series since first watching BB and it's amazing how much better it is. Close to perfection.  I enjoyed it at least as much than my first time. (I did skip the fly episode, tho :)

Having finished it, I decided to start Better Call Saul since I had heard all the good things about BCS and for some reason never tried it.  Despite struggling a bit through the first episode, or two, I was quickly on board and just finished S4 which is the last season on Netflix. It's excellent as well. I like the development of Mike's character and McKean was superb as Jimmy's brother.  I also enjoyed the foreshadowing of characters we grew to know and love from BB.

I'll probably stream S5 on my FireTv soon as I dont' think I can wait until Netflix adds it here.

Just saw an article reiterating that this isn't a documentary...it's a dramatic reimagining. But the damage is clearly being done
Yea I can’t say I feel bad for them but it has to be rough having this brought back to the light. I never really paid attention to the real-life crown at all but reading up on it all, the Diana story is very affecting.

He's appeared in a couple of the Mandalorian this season. I didn't recognize him at first because he didn't have the accent (and there's nothing comedic about this role), and when it finally dawned on me I laughed my ### off for a couple of minutes.
I recognized him right away, but the voice freaked me out. Apparently, he is a big Star Wars fan and has several cosplay outfits. Here’s an interview about him getting the role.

Similarly, Jean Yoon (the mom in Kim's Convenience) had a guest spot in The Expanse. I had the same reaction there - took me a minute or two to recognize her without the Korean accent (and there's nothing comedic about that role).

I wouldn't go this far, but I didn't like it much.  Neutered any political leanings or points from the book and was just melodrama about the family.   It also very much came off as a "let's ugly up Close and Adams and hope for an Oscar" type of project.        I got through it, but it's not something I would recommend.
Agree with this. The book was interesting, but the movie never even discussed any of the history of the Appalachian people or the details of how the family wound up in Ohio. It's like they picked out the 8 most horrible incidents of his life and made an entire movie only about that. I guess that's what sells, but I found most of the background info in the book much more interesting than the parts they chose to highlight in the movie.

While this season of the Crown was good,

1) It's my least favorite of all the seasons. Not because it wasn't done well, but the overall subject matter wasn't as interesting and I don't enjoy seeing those kinds of personal struggles, especially on public display, even if true.

2) The season was still a good watch but I particularly didn't like the last episode. They really painted Charles in an ugly light (deserved or not) and when it ended, I just felt "bleh". It made me think back on previous seasons and how I enjoyed watching them more.
Finished last night and I agree. Interesting to watch and some great performances but not as compelling as previous seasons due to more personal storylines. The backdrop of historical moments wasn't there. Great job of aging Diana from basically a child to a woman. Solid cast, most of which will be replaced again for the final 2 seasons.

Warner Bros. will release its entire 2021 slate of films on HBO Max the same day they hit theaters, including Dune, Matrix 4, Mortal Kombat, Godzilla vs. Kong, The Suicide Squad, Tom & Jerry, so many more.

1.  Does stuff like this point to theaters being less and less relevant for people?

2.  If popular, does this start the streaming services upping their prices a bit since they can market getting movies like this in your home on Day 1 of release?

I know some people love watching movies in theaters on a big screen with a packed house. I hate watching a movie with strangers. I can nearly replicate the look and sound of a movie shown in a theater with my setup at home. Technology is making that easier and easier. I expect, even without the pandemic, my days of going to a theater were numbered.

As to the second question, I think prices will slowly increase but not drastically. I think it changes the type of movies that get green lit. Those 20-30 million dollar movies of the 90s and early 2000’s may come back into vogue. Which, in my opinion, is a good thing.

HBO Max almost is certainly raising their price to coincide with this. Maybe after the Wonder Woman movie, in order to get people hooked. No way they keep it at 15 bucks while offering all that.

Yep.  Pretty sure the new releases will eventually be a pay per type thing.

We introduced the kids, 9 & 13, to Lost recently as a family TV thing. Minds have been blown. Been a big hit, powering through an episode a night.

Wife and I have jumped back into Hulu's Future Man (which I've recommended here before), s2, which I've seen already. Looks like there's a s3, which I can't remember if I've watched or not. This show still cracks me up...completely over the top in going for every gag. Great cast, hilarious show.

I’ve always enjoyed watching Aerial America on the Smithsonian Channel.
Each one hour episode is a narrated flyover of a state showing and describing landmarks, historically significant locations, etc.

Don’t be surprised if this is a one year thing. I think you are missing that they are likely struggling to get traction. Do you hear a lot about their subscriber totals like Disney+? I absolutely think this is about trying to make it a service like Netflix and Disney and Prime where everyone has it and they won’t ever get rid of it. Raising the price right now would mean that only people like me (free via AT&T cell service) would keep it. There is not GOTs or Sopranos right now. Their series are meh. They need subscribers, this is how they are trying to do it.

I don’t have any numbers in front of me, but I do know as a free subscriber that they don’t have pricing power.

I love watching movies at home and at the movie theater but I can understand not liking a crowded theater. No idea if you have one nearby post pandemic but the ones with the reclining seats have a ton of space and don’t feel like a rowdy crowded theater. That said, unless you have an actual movie theater room with a nice projector (been in some mansions with them), you really can’t come close to a movie theater experience. You can have a great setup but it’s still not the same. I’ll miss movie theaters if they go the way of the 🦤

They for sure screwed up at their drop when they didn’t have it on enough devices. Hard to get that time back.

I watched Truth Seekers, with Nick Frost and Simon Pegg. Not worth the time.

I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, but there were disappointingly few laughs.

I got HBO because of GOT. Still have it but was thinking about dropping it because their new stuff isn't appealing to me. Decided to stay for WW 1984. New buzz from critics out to day on WW1984 seem to be mostly positive.

I have it and will keep it because it’s free. There just isn’t enough on there without a show like GOT to pay $16 a month. It’s priced as a Netflix competitor and it’s not close.

Man I watch waaaaaay more of hbo than I do Netflix. But I like older movies and a ton of their series.

There is a Mariah Carey Christmas special on Apple that is AMAZING for all the wrong reasons. Porno-quality acting. I am obsessed with it.

I am with you.  I usually have trouble finding stuff on NF, but the older movies and better series on HBO for me make it >>>>>>>>>>>> NF.

What is the target audience for Mank? Some cinephiles and people with a TCM subscription? It’s not bad - it’s beautifully made if not a bit boring, it’s just weird they made a movie like this. Can’t imagine it’s going to have a positive ROI for Netflix.

People who love Citizen Kane and who possess a knowledge of the history of the film and the people portrayed in the movie?

I mentioned in the other thread about movie theaters dying but the HBO Max launch was a massive boondoggle. No Roku or Amazon Fire presence for over 6 months after launch. Massive technical problems, and a bunch of confusion with HBO Go, HBO MAX and HBO Now. Their big announced draw events like the Friends reunion indefinitely postponed due to COVID.

HBO only managed to add 8.6M new subscribers in their first 6 months during a stay at home pandemic. Disney+ has been doing 2x those numbers every 3 months. The new releases for 2021 is a bid to relaunch and drive new subscribers and word of mouth/buzz.

That being said, I have it free thru AT&T and like it. I wouldn’t pay $15 a month although the announcement about the movies moves the needle closer. It’s more of a subscribe for a month or two at a time to catch up on new seasons and then cut it off type of service so far (like actual HBO has been for a long time.) But then so is D+, CBS All-Access, Etc. Netflix and Prime are the only two I find worth always subscribed services, and Prime in large part due to all the other perks packaged together.

exact opposite for me
i havent had Netflix for long so there is alot for me to watch and catch up on
i stopped paying for HBO wasnt worth the money for the couple of shows i want to see
instead of paying for HBO and Disney , i put the money towards a yearly  VPN that i put to good use

Imo NF is all about quantity over quality.  I agree that there is more to dig through, but I am not sure there are more than 10-12 things in my queue right now.

Explain this to me because along with all the other confusion you detailed it’s unclear how you get it for free through AT&T. I have AT&T wireless. Do I get it for free?
New phone plan/trade in plan comes with this promotion.   I’m looking at upgrading from iPhone X to 12 Pro and they told me with an unlimited plan it comes with free HBO Max

i dont disagree with this
i have lots of series in my queue to entertain me  for a long time since im pretty new to cord cutting
I pretty much just watch  NF ($15 a month) , Amazon Prime (Free) and Dazn ($120 a year)
For the sports i dont get on DAZN i have a site to watch it live
With the VPN ( $100 a year) i use for shows on HBO ,Disney ,UFC ,Hulu and cable plus movies that i dont want to go to the theatre to pay to watch

Anyone else watch Industry on HBO? Being in banking, I found it entertaining. It gave my wife anxiety. Reminded me a bit of Euphoria because of the copious sex and drugs. One of those shows were there really is not anyone to root for.

The bright spot was clearly Ken Leung, he stole any scene he was in.

Couldn’t make it very far at all. I thought I’d enjoy it because I’ve grown to enjoy investing and financial info. It was too over the top for me. Making that one guy do what he did because of a font issue that of course had time to fix is where I started to lose it. Just felt like they were manufacturing the drama and I just stopped soon after. I miss Miles, may have to go back and watch Lost.

Not sure I agree but not sure our tastes align, which isn’t a big deal at all. To each their own. That said, there’s a lot of good shows IMHO. Non-US stuff as well. Definitely a lot of filler stuff but tons of good stuff.

Agree.

I enjoy both, but find that NF replaces or adds content more frequently than HBO...and I get tired of both content pretty quickly. It does take a lot more work to sift through and cull out anything worthwhile on NF though...bit it's definitely there.

There are good shows i love.  Atypical, After Life, and I will rewatch stuff like Arrested Development or Breaking Bad for some examples.  At the end of the day I have yet to see a great show that blows me away like a top level HBO has.  Add to that what I think is a subpar movie lineup for NF.  Its not Disney+ or Hulu level bad, but I think its currently 4th in my streaming pecking order.

Surprisingly, NF is mostly used for shows for the 5 year old, as there are a ton of good stuff for her.

The Undoing - HBO

Not to give anything away, but the first 5 episodes were really great.  The only problem was it's a 6 episode series.

Highlight:  Donald Sutherland delivers a line so brilliantly I had to rewind it and watch it a couple of times.

  "I'm a real C###S#####.  I'm an old fashioned C###S#####."

I don't know if this show has been discussed but there's a series currently streaming on Prime called "Red Rock".

It's an Irish television production that originally aired as an Irish soap opera.

Season 1: 80 Episodes

Season 2: 80 Episodes

Season 3: 70 Episodes

Even though it was a soap in Ireland, it plays like an American (low budget) prime time police drama.  It took my wife and I about 6 episodes to get sucked into it, but then it became so addicting I almost cried when it was over.  Each episode is only 25 minutes long so just as you're getting sucked into it, the episode ends and you need to see what happens next and before you know it, you've spent 6 hours watching this program.

I can't say that it will be everyone's taste, but I loved it and would recommend.  Worth giving 5-10 episodes to see if it's worth watching more.

One +/- some of the thick Irish dialogue is tough to catch, but you'll also pick up a dozen or so new favorite catch phrases.

Started this after finishing the Crown. 2 episodes in and like it so far.
