Finished  Squid Game.  Thought it was awesome.  Not sure why people didn't like the ending.

The show was almost ruined by the VIPs.  The writing and acting of their scenes were horrible.
I agree that the VIPs were the worst part. Almost like they over did it because well, evil Americans. Honestly, I didn’t get why they were Americans anyway.

On the ending, I just didn’t like the last 30 seconds. The idea that after all that, he wouldn’t even bother to see his daughter one last time and give her the world, kind of ruined some of the deathbed promises. It didn’t ruin the show (still liked Alice in Borderland’s story and future better), but why couldn’t they have shown a quick clip of him with his daughter and then he sees the guy after his flight back?

Yeah, the VIP's were the weakest part. They could have shown them watching, without saying a word, and it would have been much creepier. I'm guessing they'll play a bigger role in S2.

Anybody watching Day of the Dead on SyFy? Has a Znation feel to it if you like the campy zombie type of show.
I don’t think I can keep watching it. It’s not close to Znation. Znation had goofy moments but this one feels way more low budget.

Also, if someone can get shot in the head (mayor’s husband) and then wake up as a zombie, that’s bad.

im watching yet because on how much i enjoyed Znation .
figured Syfy did such a good job on Znation that this would be good as well
its just stupid fun show but enjoying it

Yes.  I like it 7/10.  The zombies act like you would expect, unlike some other semi-famous shows.  There is just enough comedic characters and comedy to keep it fun instead of a soap opera and generally the story line/plot is interesting. Lots of blood.

Chucky (series) 0/10.  Do not even even consider wasting one second watching this.

The other show I'm using to fill in the gaps is Another Life (sci-fi) 6.5/10.  It's on par with Foundation.  A couple good actors I like.

oof... this was CB level goofy teenage bad. makes The 100 look like Proust. made it an episode or two before happily bailing. nowhere near Foundation for me, and I'm not really a fan of Foundation.

there's a new show on Apple- Invasion- that's frustrating in it's focus on typical TV melodrama (bullying, infidelity, lesbians, etc) instead of Invasion. But it's ok so far and will hopefully get more into the Invasion side of things.

Wife and I finished Only Murders in the Building and I thought it was just OK.  Maybe someone already mentioned this and I missed it, but Selena Gomez' voice is so nasally at times it makes me want to throw something at the TV.
My wife and I watched the first episode and  thought "meh".  It wasn't worth to continue.

I agree with the love for Dopesick. Pretty good show.

Finished Squid Game too. Some parts were annoying but overall, I thought it was a decent season. Worth a watch, assuming blood doesn't bother you.

   I like Justin Chatwin, and I like them figuring out what the artifact is/does/wants.  Some of the other characters are likable/hateable.   That they actually have aliens in the show.  I graded it a C-/D+ and probably wouldn't be watching if I hadn't run through everything else on my list.

I had hopes for Invasion, I like Sam Neill, but after two episodes in with no actual aliens and a whole lot of of the melodrama mentioned above I bailed.  I can't stand the melodrama stuff.

Good choice. We're up to date 4 in, and it's still basically 98% melodrama. but it looks like there may be some movement forward in the upcoming week or weeks.

I think they're trying to put things together gradually, instead of just revealing everything at once. if you think about it, along the 5 story lines, everyone has a piece of the puzzle:

military guy - has actually seen & fought an alien
Japanese technician - saw video of space station attack and has the audio clues
New York family - son has some piece of an artifact and heard the loud noises in his head
British schoolkid - has visions of the future (i.e. Russian wording)?
sherriff - discovered the crop circle and was...'contacted'

it's definitely not great, but I'll probably give it a couple more episodes to see if it goes anywhere. plus, the evil Rick Astley kid makes me laugh,

  I said the same thing to the wife, verbatim

I agree with what you're saying, re the puzzle pieces (artifact kid also was the "lucky" non-nosebleed kid in school). but the writing has been pretty poor with the reliance on hackneyed melodrama tropes... and it persisted each episode. after 1, I got it- Rick Roll is an irredeemable ****. Cheater is selfish, etc, etc. it's needed much better balance in general, but also implementing the invasion part of things, instead of hitting us over the head with the non-important story-lines.

I totally get what you're saying, and some of the melodramatic stuff is pretty eye-rolling. but Lost had a lot of the same stuff - melodramatic storylines in parallel with unexplained sci-fi weirdness - and people couldn't get enough of it. they ate it up every week.

I think that because of how the world has changed since then, with any information available on-demand at your fingertips and being able to binge watch shows in a single sitting, people don't have the patience for it any more.

Wanted to love Another Life on Netflix.

Sci-fi,  aliens,  Katie Sackhoff, decent looking ship and potential story.

Maybe it gets a B? Didn't like the ending,  her husband was 100%annoying or boring the entire time,  they seemed to just get rid of certain characters for no reason....

Still.  Wasn't terrible.  Yeah.  B. Just barely.

I think Lost was done way better than Invasion though (so far at least.) Invasion I'm pulling my hair out because I just don't care about the characters for the most part, and the story is building frustratingly slowly. Way too melodramatic... but still watching,  hoping to actually see an Invasion :bag:

Half way through The Chestnut Man on Netflix and really enjoying it. The English dubbing is actually quite good in this one.  Silence of the Lambs kind of vibe.
Great tone throughout, enjoyed this a lot, watched with subtitles and liked the two leads. Good thriller.

Just finished The Forest (La forêt) on Netflix. Very enjoyable 6-episode series.

Prior to that watched Black Spot (Zone Blanche) on Netflix. Better than The Forest, but both the dubbing and the subtitles were horrible.

Prior to that watched Quicksand. Don't bother, unless watching very wealthy teenagers feeling sorry for themselves is your thing. There were 1.5 likeable characters in the whole season.

Watching Babylon Berlin on Netflix, in the original German with subtitles. The English dubbing is not so good.

Really fantastic show about a fascinating time period: Berlin in the late 1920s. It's a dark film noir detective show, at its heart and a great period piece. The acting is phenomenal and the cinematography and set design is really excellent, as well. The characters are all thoroughly fleshed out and the story is complex, but not contrived. Highly recommend it.

Battlestar Galactica (all seasons) was just released on Prime.  Have always wanted to watch it but could never find it.

Just finishing season 1.  Love it and totally get why it was so well reviewed at the time.
Nice - I didn't see that when I was scanning the other day.   Is it in HD?

Now I am mildly curious if I notice the difference - I noticed the other day when I randomly watched a few Buffy episodes that they looked better, clarity wise.   I just read up on it, and I guess Joss is pissed they basically did HD versions without him and messed up the aspect ratio and other stuff.

Yeah, I forgot to come back and report after completing the show. It was very good all the way through. No complaints at all.

Loved this show. Enjoyed the characters, the plot, the hint of supernatural, the wide shots of endless trees surrounding this secluded French town. Really good IMO.

this was fantastic. S1 was absolutely tip-top, and even though the next two dropped a little- still really good tv.

Also watched Katla awhile back and thoroughly enjoyed it. Set in remote Iceland with a volcano under a glacier and people occasionally wandering out of it. If anyone here watched it, Grima's husband has to be the biggest ####### of all time.

I agree, very good show. I always watch in the original language and don't mind subtitles.
I watched S1 of Dark with dubbing...just about ruined an amazing show for me.

I always go with VO, but it makes for some sleepy nights sometimes. Nordic languages in particular end up sounding like lullabies.

Another winner of a show, and yes, I loved (to hate) that guy. Thought the slow build was excellent and the payoffs were really well done (the kid was another great character, as well as the parent's not knowing what the hell to do with him.)

He's such a dolt. I mean, Grima is by far the best person in the whole show, she's his wife, and second Grima appears and is also in his house, and he never notices there are 2 of them because he's always out with his stupid cows.

Finished up Midnight Mass and it was worth watching.  I thought it ended a bit abruptly and could have spent some time on the.....wait I can't really say the spoiler.  skip if you don't want some spoiler

The reverse aging aspect was obvious after a couple episodes (I kind of thought the costumes of the elderly mom from the beginning didn't look right like they had a younger actress playing older for some reason so it kind of ruined that reveal for me a bit as I noticed it from the get go).  and I expected a little more story arc associated with that.  The characters never really made that connection with some of the reversing of physical issues (wheel chair, baby, etc).  It seemed like they could have developed that a bit before it all went to hell

I thought it was well done- loved some of the religious aspects being brought in. defintely worth watching.

I agree about the "elderly" mom- casting her led to immediate guessing as to why that particular actress and not somebody old.

didn't feel like the other thing was an issue- felt like the show incorporated the aging at a decent pace over the course of the series.

something I was wondering... the last line of the show- said by the girl in the boat- implies the "angel" may have moved on permanently... right? gave closure to the series in a satisfying way, IMO.

I mentioned upthread, but it bugged me that- like TWD with zombies- there was no mention of vampires here, in spite of it being a pretty easy jump to make for the characters...all of whom would be completely aware of them from pop culture.

I thought the development of the aging was awesome and the slow reveal was great but I wanted the characters to start to figure it out and start questioning and realizing why the wheel chair and why the baby loss happened and maybe confront the preacher with that a bit before all hell broke loose.  For having that nice slow reveal and story development to just jumping to all hell breaking loose seemed like they needed to just end it where there could have been a bit more realization and story there.

As far as the end it made it seem like the girl was reversed back to damaged (no feeling in legs) but she did drink of the blood many times.  I guess we are meant to assume that eventually wears off as new blood is generated?  I had no problem with that part of the ending seemed reasonable.

My wife and I watched the first episode [of Only Murders in the Building] and  thought "meh".  It wasn't worth to continue.

I do think it improved quite a bit as it went on, but I never didn't enjoy it.  They kind of wait until the finale to let Steve Martin go full Steve Martin, but when they do, he delivers with some great "All of Me" level physical comedy.  Conversely, Short's performances become more naturalistic and less spastic-y Martin Short-y as the season goes on.  The penultimate episode, with Jane Lynch playing Martin's old stunt double, was also very funny (whereas the show before was often more "witty" than outright funny at the beginning).

Comedy is comedy.  It's either pitched to your sensibilities or it isn't.  OMITB was very much my kind of jam, but I can see how others' mileage may vary.  I haven't tried to get my wife to watch it, for instance.

spoiled.

the aging... I felt like they wrapped and tied that into the religious aspects- miracles were happening, surrounding the priest. all it takes is faith. the teacher/priest side kick was fantastic quoting scripture that kinda made sense of all of it...if you believe. I genuinely liked all of that. and so when the reveal happens, it's still under the guise of the miraculous, rather than a vampire. which I also liked. they figure it out too late. I didn't love or buy the deus ex machina of the sidekick lighting everything on fire and/or that there was absolutely nowhere left to hide from the sun.

the girl- I took her reverting back to being paralyzed as coming from the angel/vampire dying instead of successfully flying off. all of the people under his control/affect were now free. so the second she has that realization, it's "oh crap, I'm back to normal... but at least the creature is dead".

Pretty sure it’s all in HD. I didn’t realize it came out the same year as Lost. I remember we finished our basement right before Lost started and that was my first real show in HD, unreal how awesome it was. I didn’t have an HD DVR yet so I had to be downstairs right when it started and luckily my two boys were 3 and two months so they were down by 9pm. I had the 5.1 surround sound setup with back speakers in the ceiling and there were no windows in the theater room (couch and loveseat). Unreal with the airplane engines at the start. BSG came out a month or so later. It was honestly TV heaven when you are used to 4:3 and go to a 65” HDTV with 5.1 sound.

Midnight Mass

The gift wasn't about aging. It was about being the best/peak physical health. Hence the baby being eliminated from the lady's body because the fetus was a parasite.

I always wanted to check this out after hearing good things. Does anyone know if Amazon will keep it on for a long time? I'd hate to start it and it gets pulled halfway through.

Thanks for the reminder about this one. Forgot all about it.

I tried looking for Battlestar Galactica on Prime, and got rental options.   I will poke more tonight,  but thought that was weird.
