Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (58 Viewers)

I started the series Animal Kingdom. It's been entertaining with a few decent storylines and common threads between episodes that keeps me interested. Over the top for sure but has a bit of a Point Break feel at times.
We’re into season 3. Really liking it, although smarty is getting on my nerves a little bit.

It’s not great by any means but it always kept me entertained

Watched the first two episode of Task and the first episode of Black Rabbit.

Task is very good.

A lot of bad reviews coming out about Black Rabbit. I'm a sucker for Bateman, but the pace is a tad slow.
Hoping it ramps up a bit.
Yeah, funny how things shake out sometimes. I was really looking forward to Black Rabbit (mainly because of Bateman, Ozarks, etc.). I would say it hasn't been bad, but not something where I can't stop watching, either. Meanwhile, I completely stumbled across Task, and I wish I didn't have to wait for new episodes on Sundays. I could easily blast through a season of that in a couple of nights. It's solid, and at least so far, I would say easily the better of the two shows.

task is better but black rabbit picks it up for the last 3 episodes

Traitors Ireland S1 finale.

Game prize is in euros and I sometimes forget how much the USA games are astronomical compared to other nations. Life changing has a different meaning for sure.

They got it right when one banished Faithful called it a 'mean girls' clique kind of game. Very catty and overtalking loudly.

They got 3 Traitors in a row. Might be a record.

Cool ending as the Traitors had to keep giving ultimatums leaving a the question of who got converted but knowing there are definitely 2.

Oyin was a 'can't miss' sleuth calling them out.

Finding 6 Traitors definitely is a record, right?

Final roundtable did - not - follow recent trends of not revealing if the final banishment is a Traitor or Faithful. Knowing there were 2 Traitors remaining and revealing Nick doomed Ben.

Difference: Firepit bag flame does not go green or red. Flame high or no chemical reaction instead.

They also revealed the firepit banishment as Traitor/Faithful making the game easier as they find the 'other' Traitor Ben.
Think they should leave the roundtable and firepit banishments unknown for TV, though it gives the Traitors a huge advantage.

3 Faithful win!

Has anybody been wathing the Jason Mimosa show on Apple, Chiefs of War?

period piece Hawaii origin story. It's Apple- so it's typically good, but not great. But worth watching IMO. subtitles make it a little tricky for late night or background viewing.

I'm 5 in, it's fine I guess. See was way more fun IMO, though I'm in the minority I think.

I think the final episode of Black Rabbit was a clunker though.

Also watched the first episode of Chief of War and didn't really like that either. It feels very Hollywoodized. I've tried to look up the real history and I don't really think that's what happened either but it was a bit confusing to me. I also like The Rock better than Jason Momoa so I wish he had done it instead. If I had apple+ I'd probably finish watching the whole thing to see where it goes. Really high rankings on IMDB and RT but a much more reasonable 72 on meta critic.

Caught up on Slow Horses, which is fantastic. I don't know why I didn't check the show out until now - I think my lizard brain just saw the title and thought it'd be boring. Not at all, it turns out! Pretty action packed, funny, and extremely well acted.

Finished up Halt and Catch Fire last night. One of my absolute favorite series in recent memory and I give it the highest recommendation. The last 4 or so episodes in the series hit. SO. HARD. Just a masterclass in TV. Can't believe I had never even heard of the series until someone mentioned it in here, so a huge thank you to whomever that was!

BTW, you can watch seasons 1 and 2 for free streaming on Philo. I had to subscribe to AMC+ for a month ($6.99) to watch seasons 3 and 4 but it was so worth it.

Yup. I went from this to starting Foundation recently, and was pleasantly surprised to see Lee Pace again.

Thought Pace was fantastic in most recent S3 of foundation.

halt and catch fire is one of the all time great underrated shows. So good.

Recently finished Black Rabbit 🐰 on NetFlix. I really wanted to like it but didn’t. It’s one of those shows where you kind of don’t like any of the characters. Hard to root for any of them. Also, parts of it reminded me of Rounders (which is a classic), but I feel like they pretty much stole a lot of that story line.

I'm on episode 3 and am loving it. I can see where you are coming from, but I don't really need a character to root for.

Has anyone started " House of Guinness" on Netflix? It's from the creator of "Peaky Blinders" so that's enough for me to give it a watch.

The series is about the family behind the Guinness brewing company in 19th-century Ireland and New York. The story follows the consequences of the death of Benjamin Guinness, the man responsible for the extraordinary success of the Guinness brewery. The story concerns the fate of his four adult children, Arthur, Edward, Anne and Ben.

Like it so far after 3 episodes. Turned subtitles on after the first episode and it is much better.

Living in NYC at the time and frequenting the bar/restaurant it's based on makes it interesting for me but many plot points are such a stretch. I go along with it to enjoy the ride but definitely not a must watch. I'd say 6/10. I'm on Ep 3.

A little late, but watched "Stick" over the weekend. Enjoyed it but nothing to rave about. Extremely predictable. Owen Wilson playing Owen Wilson.
Some good moments throughout though.

I found the Zero and mom characters poorly acted and too much of the story predictable and formulaic. but it's still fun enough- wilson doing himself, but olyphant and maron both leading the way along with stick's wife.

I don’t know if this is the target audience, but anyone who was a fan of Anne Rice’s Interview With a Vampire and disappointed with the previous film adaptations: there’s a new series adaptation on Netflix that is really, really good.

Shot beautifully, phenomenal casting and acting, and storyline cut to be compelling and not slog thru all of the period historical narrative that kills Rice’s prose.

First season is out already, 2nd Season drops Tuesday, and apparently there’s a 3rd Season in the hopper that’ll release in ‘26.

I'm still enjoying Task, but is anyone else finding they are stretching the story out to reach a certain number of episodes? After 4 episodes I think the story could have been wrapped up and instead we are just past the halfway point.
That seems to be the nature of movies and TV shows now. Writers/creators make their story fit the format rather than just telling the story without things being padded on to reach a predetermined number of episodes or running time.

I liked Zero after her initial introduction. She was definitely a cliched over the top social justice warrior without any background given as to why. Gen whatever I guess. But she softened and I actually liked the character.

Olyphant and Maron were good, as usual. Always love a good Judy Greer role. Kid was the most annoying though.

It started with most of the characters being really unlikable, but by the end they were decent.

Same name as the book/movie?

Yes, Interview with the Vampire

I think I'm at an 8 after 3 episodes...I like the actors and character complexities.

I feel that. Starting to get a bit Sons of Anarchyish which is not a good thing.

Might give “wayward” a shot this week.

Wife and I watched episode one last night. She really liked it, I thought it was fine and will watch more (was in a bad mood from Vikings, USA, and Mets losses). It's somewhat of a cross between Get Out, Twin Peaks, and a bad teen novel.

The review online are mixed, and it's apparently because the main character is not well received. The actor playing the main character wrote the story and directed it, so I guess it's hard to criticize. If not obvious, the backlash is due to the character being trans - or at least portrayed by a trans actor who identifies as non-binary - and from the show it seems like they just ignore the main character's gender (okay, that's fine by me as it shouldn't matter) while the main character engages in some traditionally masculine actions such as literally conceiving a child, winning physical fights, etc. In other words, many probably consider it too "woke" and while I personally disagree, the main character's persona is confusing at times.

I am growing annoyed with the leader of the gang actor. He constantly has his head down with his eyes looking up regardless of who he is talking to.

I’m a huge Bateman fan and wanted to love it but I didn’t. It was good and entertaining but it kind of stumbled for me towards the end.

I don’t think they ignore it - they literally talk about the gender treatments (such as discussing that he doesn’t “have stubble yet”), and the townspeople tell the couple they’ll be accepted there despite the alternative family dynamic, but I agree that it is all really confusing. Seeing that that person was the writer/director now answers the question I had in my head about they ever got cast. I’d saying avoid acting and stick to the rest, but the writing was so dreadful that I can’t recommend they do that, either.

Is that in future episodes? If it was in the first episode, I completely missed that but the bold alleviates my confusion as my impression was it was ignored altogether (even to the extent that I thought they were suggesting the baby was conceived naturally).

I concede that I was only partly paying attention because I had a bad sports fan day as described and was watching the Sunday night game on a different device at the same time my wife and I watched the first episode. I probably dozed off at some point too.
🤦‍♂️

Watched the first episode and yes, def. need subtitles. I was a little confused why there was so much fighting amongst them in the beginning, so had to look it up. First off, there wasn't a riot during the funeral as depicted, but old man Guinness was a devout Protestant and a vocal supporter of unity with England. I didn't know about Fenians either so had to look that up too. Good start...

Finished Black Rabbit. Felt overall it was pretty solid. Not Bateman's best.

Caught up on Task. I keep thinking I SHOULD find it a tad slow, but I don't.

Finished my 3rd watch of the 4th season of The Wire. Still holds up as the best single season of any show ever, imo. So much going on, great storylines and acting. It's been a long time since I saw it last so there were a few surprises that I didn't remember.
On to S5.
That's the season with the journalists and Littlefinger running for office? Great one, my personal fave is season three with the school kids.

Journalists was Season 5. S4 was the one with the kids in school and Littlefinger running for Mayor.
Season 3 was Hamsterdam.

I'm just finishing the third season of what is probably my 8th rewatch of the series. Honestly, seasons 1-4 are impeccable with season two growing on me more with every rewatch.

Remains head and shoulders the greatest show ever. I have tried to watch some other shows during the watch but just find myself loving the comfort of The Wire as my routine is usually to watch 30-60 minutes of a show to wind down before bed most nights.

The journalists along with the fake serial killer are season five. Sounds like your personal favorite (which matches a lot of people's even though I actually rank it third myself) is season four - the one with the school kids and Littlefinger running for mayor and the rise of Marlo to power (very little McNulty in this one).
