Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (18 Viewers)

Not sure if many here are using unblockus or similar shifting app, but I really liked "They Came Together" only on Netflix UK and Ireland at the moment.

Anyway, parody of romantic comedies but actually really funny. Miles ahead of date movie and the like... of course I'm a sucker for Amy Poehler.
I believe this is from a few of the state/wet hot American summer guys, iirc.

Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father

Why would anyone recommend this? I am *so* the target audience for this movie. I love documentaries and I really like movies that are dark and weird. You know how some movies are so profound they change you as a person? This movie was so gut-wrenchingly awful, I feel like I need a month of therapy just to recover. I regret watching it, and there isn't a soul on the planet I'd ask to view it.
I just watched the trailer and it made me want to go in a corner and cry. I'm guessing I'd be a sobbing wreck the entire time watching this film.
If I'd just sobbed, that might have been bearable. This movie made me feel dead inside.
I've had it in my queue for 3 years. Can't bring myself to watch it.
I just watched this. I'm a freaking mess.
:( OK, this is what I'm worried about. I've had mild depression issues in the past, and just can't bring myself to watch it. Many people say it's a must watch, but everyone says how sad it is.
I love documentaries. But if you're going to sit down and watch one, go with Murder on a Sunday Morning. The material is almost as dark, but your final feeling at the end is at least bearable.

Saw a few classics on there today that I don't remember being there:

Chinatown

The apartment

The conversation

Thief

French connection
Love The Conversation. Sorry if I've typed this a million times, but that small scene where Hackman is speaking on the phone to his landlord is probably the best natural acting I've ever seen.

I really need to watch Thief. James Caan, right?

Watched a couple things this weekend

Stoneheart Asylum-

A recent medical school grad who takes a position at a mental institution soon finds himself taken with one of his colleagues -- though he has no initial idea of a recent, horrifying staffing change. 6.9/10 IMDB, 45% liked at Rotten Tomatoes.
Meh.. if you liked Shutter Island you might like it, this is a scaled down version of that, Ben Kingsley great as always.

And I watched Borgias season 1. Not bad, not sure I'm going to season 2, I read they planned on 4 seasons but cancelled after the 3rd, not a good sign.

Besides the new season of House of Cards, I don't see much of interest.
I'm looking forward to Spartacus as I only had a Chaney to watch 2 or 3 episodes during a free weekend season one.. but I do remember some.... ummmm :excited: moments involving Xena :)
Didn't have to wait for Netflix. Spartacus is here:

correct. it's michael mann's first feature and you can see how it served as a template for most of his other work.

Thief is the Michael Mann's first feature. Its high gloss, low life style has been so widely imitated over the years (including by Mann himself) that it probably loses some of the impact it would have had 30 years ago. But it's a solid 80s film noir.

League of Denial

Well done Frontline documentary on the problem of concussions and subconcussive hits and their effects on the sport of football. Nice cover-up by the NFL. Goodell is not likeable.

I posted this in the Amazon thread, but since that one doesn't draw nearly as many eyeballs as this one and streaming content is streaming content ...

The pilot for The Man in the High Castle on Amazon on Demand is outstanding. Maybe the best pilot I've seen since the first Breaking Bad episode. I don't know what the timeline will eventually be production of the rest of the season and availability, but it's worth checking out just for the hour of great TV. It's part of their free "pilot season" content.

And I watched Borgias season 1. Not bad, not sure I'm going to season 2, I read they planned on 4 seasons but cancelled after the 3rd, not a good sign.
Finished season 2, moving on to season 3 just to see what happens, but wouldn't recommend really.

After season 3 I delve in to finding out just how much of this show is 'true' and how much is a great exaggeration of things that may have happened at one time. Really curious about that.

Liked this one as well (got in from my library)...loved the cameo towards the end.
Thought this movie was terrible. I got what it was trying to do and it has the actors to pull something like it off but it was just completely unfunny, I only had one sincere laugh and that was Shannon's cameo at the end. Otherwise I thought it was garbage.

Oooo I like Michael Mann. I need to see that.

On another note, the Hotwire mode in the new Battlefield 4 beta is amazing, and it feels like you're playing a character in the movie Heat during that bank heist.

I saw Thief only once, in the theaters.

I remember finding it kind of meh and silly as a 13yo... but I have no memory at all of the movie other than the bleep-bloopy score by Vangelis IIRC.

I've never connected that it was Michael Mann.

Not sure if it's been recommended in here, but I watched the bodybuilding documentary "Pumping Iron" tonight and it was pretty awesome.

It's as satisfying to me as, uh, coming is, you know? As, ah, having sex with a woman and coming. And so can you believe how much I am in heaven? I am like, uh, getting the feeling of coming in a gym, I'm getting the feeling of coming at home, I'm getting the feeling of coming backstage when I pump up, when I pose in front of 5,000 people, I get the same feeling, so I am coming day and night. I mean, it's terrific. Right? So you know, I am in heaven.

I never realized what a clown this guy was. Really eye opening and funny at points too.

Wasn't sure if I'd like this and had been debating watching it for a while but did tonight. It was really good.

Joe is excellent if you haven't seen it yet. Probably one of my favorite half dozen or so movies from last year.
Cannot say enough good things about Joe.
Its a shame that Cage does so many ####ty movies, because when he is really engaged he is a very good actor. Tye Sheridan is going to be a great actor as well if he expands his range a bit. Looks like we'll get to see him try to super hero thing in the new X-Men movie where he plays Cyclops.

I agree. I watched it due to Kev's recommendation and thought it was very good.

The Machinist -a must watch IMO, especially is you like psychological thrillers

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361862/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Just watched this. Twisted as all heck. Wife checked out mid way through as it was too creepy for her. Bale is unbelievable. Solid flick, thanks.
Watched The Machinist over the weekend. I hadn't even heard of it until the rec in this thread. I don't exactly keep up on Hollywood news, so it's nice to have a lot of movies like this out there that are new to me.

Just finished Auschwitz:inside the nazi state

Excellent and chilling documentary series from the BBC

Highly recommend to anyone interested in that part of history

First 5 seasons of MASH TV series. I probably won't be going through all of them right now, but am definitely hitting all of the Col. Flagg episodes. I have watched the first 2 so far, for those interested:

S2 - Ep37 Deal Me Out - first intro of the character, he's not in it much and is way less crazy

S2 - Ep48 A Smattering of Intelligence - now this is our Col. Flagg, this is the one where he purposely breaks his arm ...twice

S3 - Ep51 Officer of the Day

S3 - Ep71 White Gold

S4 - Ep81 Quo Vadis Captain Chandler?

S5 - Ep102 The Abduction of Margaret Hoolihan

Only one more and its past season 5:

S7 - Ep165 Rally Round the Flagg Boys

I watched on this recommendation.

Really well done. Covers a lot without going into a lot of detail about any one thing.

Glad you enjoyed it.

I recently started....

Secrets of the dead:Deadliest battle. (About Stalingrad)

Nazi Megaweapons

Both very good too. Both by PBS

Copper -

a show about a cop set in 1860's NY city. I'm about 4 episodes in and it's been pretty good so far. Not a lot of name actors so that's refreshing. The only one I recognize is the main character's main ho squeeze who was the girl in the Bourne movies until she died.

I liked Copper when it was on. It was a shame it got cancelled. I liked how it wasn't all a continuous storyline, each episode had a story in itself that got resolved by the end.

After going through The Fall, Happy Valley, Orange is the New Black, Breaking Bad and the first season of Helix I've been trying to find another series to watch.

Started up "WentWorth prison" .. finished up episode 4 of season 1 yesterday.. It's just OK so far..

Seems to be trying to hard to be Orange is the New Black without the humor or Lesbian affairs..
