Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (30 Viewers)

Sad to see black sails is not on netflix. Wanted to check it out
if you have amazon prime you can sign up for Starz for $8.99/mo.

watch the episodes and cancel after 1 month...comes out to .32/episode. would have to wait until season 3 airs though (last episode is 3/26)

If really ambitious could get the 7 day free trial (in late March or April and watch all 28 that way!

Peaky Blinders season 3 doesn't come out until October. I don't know why I thought it was sooner than that...

Better series?

Happy Valley or Broadchurch?
I liked Happy Valley more but that is not to take away from Broadchurch
I liked Broadchurch slightly more but I think it's partly because I could understand the actors better than in HV. We had to use subtitles for some of Happy Valley because we just couldn't pick up what they were saying with the thick accents. At any rate, they are both very very good shows.

The snow and booze has somehow led me to "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend". Hulu, not Netflix, but it's pretty much the same thing. I must say it's pretty solid. It's quite funny at times, and Rachel Bloom is really good (got a bit of middle class woman's Emma Stone thing going on). There's some real potential here, especially if they dig a little deeper with the mental health issues. It's got some of that darkness that a lot of the great comedies have these days.

It's definitely worth checking, even though it has pretty much everything seemingly working against it. It's the lowest rated show on the lowest rated network. The entire original premise is completely ridiculous. Awful, awful title. And it's a damn musical (I wouldn't have watched it if I had known that before hand, but the songs can be hilarious at times).

I know it's not Netflix but being laid up post surgery means I have nothing but time. I'm doing the 1 month free of HBO now, how I had never watched the wire is a mystery but I'm glad I hadn't as I've already blown through season 1 and still have 9 more days of no walking on my knee.

Jealous

Only Breaking Bad surpassed it for me but I still think Season 4 of The Wire was the best season of television ever.

Sorry to hear about the knee gb, enjoy the show!

I binge watched it for the first time last year - awesome show.

Just finished Broadchurch. Fantastic show and slightly better than Happy Valley for me. Can't think of anything that could have made it better. Can't wait for season 3.

not Netflix again, sorry- but The Missing on Starz (also on Amazon Prime) is pretty amazing, start to finish.

anybody else catch this?

Your ambitious slothfulness is an inspiration, GB.

Watching "Occupied"

It's a Scandinavian show from the production company Yellow Bird who has done a few things I have liked.

Annika Bengtzon, Wallander, Girl with the dragon tattoo series and a cool movie Headhunters.

This show is about Norway stopping their oil/gas production which leads to Russia wanting to occupy their country.

While the story is far fetched but I enjoy the characters, feel the acting is very good and am entertained by the premise and how the show is slow playing the occupation.

That and I am a sucker for foreign dramas.

Give it a shot if it's in your wheelhouse.

Gets off to a pretty fast start so not like you have to invest too many hours to decide.

You all might have already known this, but I just started watching The IT Crowd. Really funny.

Highly recommended to fans of silly British sitcoms.

If you can handle subtitles or speak French.. I just finished watching Spiral.. I liked it quite a bit..

It's Amazon Prime original but, "Mad Dogs". Original series that's kind of like that movie, "Very Bad Things" with Christian Slater. It's got the funny black dude from 40yo virgin... and the gay for the gym teacher sidekick to Jack Black from "Saving Silverman"... it's a drama though. I almost turned it off at one point during the first ep... really glad I didn't. Only a few eps in but it's a fun ride.

ETA: Wow.... it actually looks like this is a remake of a UK show (yet another!)

1. The Wire

Only other one I've seen is Broadchurch. Its very good but there's no particular rush for it.

Watching The Wire followed immediately by Luther would be a pretty cool mindblower. Stringer Bell to John Luther in one jump would freak me out.

I would say Game of Thrones if you want to get caught up with the new season coming.

But The Wire is the best on your list.

I would binge watch other shows before game of thrones, the wire, breaking bad, sopranos or any other all time great show. So hard to watch a good but not great show now and really get into it.

I've never binge watched a show. I prefer taking my time with it. The closest I guess was Making a Murderer. Took me 2 weeks. :D

Binged narcos finished in 2 days. Found myself on pandora listening to Colombian music today. Good sountrack

Yeah I don't mean watching it all in one weekend. There's 50 hours or so of game of thrones just so far, and I think a little more of the wire. For me when I binge watch I'll watch an episode today, another a couple days later, until I get properly hooked and watch whenever I can. You can definitely do that with wire and game of thrones.

Fwiw, i think game of thrones is the better of the two - they've got movie quality production value for every single episode and the special effects in a couple episodes are unforgettable.

I can totally understand preferring the grittier and more realistic wire especially if you like crime drama. They're both the unfair bar by which their genre is measured.

hey there binghans here is the swc list of great shows to watch on netflix or swclogstwon as many people across the nation call it anyhow here it is sherlock house of cards marco polo peeky blinders bloodlines river and now i am in to broadchurch which i watch with my lady take that to the bank bromigos or as some have started to call it ttttbb

Beasts of No Nation - Wow. Just wow. What a film and what a performance by Abraham Attah (the kid). Elba is deservedly getting accolades but I think the kid carried the film and it wasn't really close. It is incredibly powerful and felt entirely authentic.

It had a bit of a Terrence Malick vibe with some of the large scale shots in the bush, showing Attah as being so small and vulnerable, and the perspective is almost entirely Attah's. There is no backstory to the war/revolution just the perspective of a child growing up in a refugee protected zone and what happens to him subsequently as the war escalates.

Supremely well done and I think it is a shame that a feature like this does not qualify for Oscar consideration. I am still way behind on the currently nominated films but I think BoNN is the best 2015 film I have seen so far.

But vicodin though :excited:

watched errol morris' "tabloid" last night. it's clear that he enjoyed the subject - former southern bell beauty queen "kidnapped" her fiancee from the Mormons in 1970's London - but it's pretty light fare from morris. while mckinney is a hoot, it really would have benefited from her "captive" talking. you can see where her story is kind of a early version of what is all too common now with scandal, celebrity and the media.

Finished this

Enjoyed it. Was a fun watch and looking forward to S2.

Some thrilling scenes and good storylines

This does have subtitles but there is lots of english spoken as well

I enjoyed it. Then again, I've seen just about every Morris movie and consider myself a fan.

Finished "Broadchurch" season 1 and thought it was excellent.

Through 3 episodes of season 2 they seem dedicated to destroying what made season 1 great. Going to slog through, but not getting a good vibe so far.

I heard there was an Americanized version of this that was absolutely dreadful.
