I tried this Ricky Gervais Netflix series for five minutes last year, and couldn't stomach Gervais playing an autistic / mentally challenged care home worker. But I tried it again this week, and I am glad I did. If you can get past the obvious gimmick of Gervais' character, you have a sweet, touching portrayal of an elderly care home that hits a lot of high notes. I'm certain this was sold as a comedy, and that was a mistake. The show has laughs, but as a drama it works very well. Highly recommended.

I'm new to Netflix and had a few questions.
We are using our free trial month at the moment. Does anything change when the free month is up? Do we have access to the entire streaming catalog now or once we start paying do we get more to choose from?
It seems on the surface that there is a bigger/better/newer catalog on their DVD plan than steaming? True? False?
Using Netflix through my BluRay player, it seems like there is only about 10-20% of their streaming content available compared to when we use it through a smart tv. It appears only things in their Popular section are available and older shows and movies that are on regular Netflix are not an option.
If you wanted to watch newer movie releases or a broader spectrum of tv shows, is Amazon Prime a better option?

1. Nothing changes from trial to subscriber in terms of content. They just start billing you for it.
2. DVD catalog will always have more content available vs streaming. It will also be more current.
3. You should have no restrictions to about what content appears available through your device. The interface may be different but that's it. You can always go to the Netflix website, search there to create your "List" and review new titles added.
4. Amazon is very similar overall. The key difference between Netflix and AP is that you can rent or buy titles with AP to stream directly. Netflix doesn't have this option and likely won't ever. They are both adding more original content, too, but the quality of it is all over the place. I find the AP interface to be pretty terrible and hard to search. Netflix is much better in that regard.
I think the DVD plan with the streaming will give most people what they want with mostly convenient access to new content and a library to stream too.

DVDs are key. Wife and I have had streaming + DVDs for several years and there is always something we want to watch between the two, and usually on both at the same time.

Witnesses
It's a french series and only has 1 season so far (not sure if there is a S2 or if this was just a miniseries)
This is a crime show, dark and gritty I enjoyed the main characters and the story premise.
The Code
This is Australian and is a thriller involving computer hacking and murder cover up.
Only 1 season on netflix and looks like there is a S2 that I now have to find.
The Returned
Another French series. I liked this one a lot. It has an english remake on A&E that I never bothered to watch but this one is creepy, well done, thrilling, chilling at times and well acted.
It does has a supernatural element to it. Awesome, I see a S2 is out somewhere but not on Netflix....will have to find that.
The Great Train Robbery
This is an English 2 part series. Just 2 movies essentially but a cool story involving a.....train robbery.
Very fun and well worth the few hours of your time.
Hinterland
This is a crime show set in Wales and is very creepy and dark. Well acted story lines are intriguing, thrilling and good to follow.
Great scenery. Only 4 eps and once gain I see a S2 is out but not on Netflix...gotta find that one too.
Wallander
There are 2 versions of this Wallander character adaptation on Netflix.
I watched and enjoyed both...i would give the nod to this English version but enjoyed both.
It's your typical cop show who battles his inner demons etc...well done show and likable main character
Henning Mankell's Wallander
This is the Swedish version, also really enjoyed this one.
This Wallander character is an older dude so may have a different appeal.
The shows I believe are different so not like if you watch 1 you will be spoiled by the other.
Both are quality shows.

6 episode miniseries.
Takes place in Ireland and stars Iain Glen, (Mormant from game of Thrones).
Another crime drama of a troubled cop. Fun and a good watch.

3 seasons out and S4 will be out in April.
Very good show. It's got a sci fi element to it as it involves cloning but it is fast paced and fun and I would rank Tatiana Maslany's acting in this show right up there with the best we have ever seen.
Takes place in Canada and no need for subtitles.
I think that is all I have?
maybe a couple of other ones on Amazon but can't recall right now.

If you like creepy and picturesque scenery Hinterland is well done (if you haven't watched it yet)
I am watching S2 elsewhere online but S1 is on Netflix.
More of miniseries instead of a show as there are only 3-4 eps.
It's a good show but I am finding myself just a tad bored and I think its because the show is essentially the main character.
very little with the side or supporting characters.
Still worth it for the scenery alone

Just finished season 2 of Rectify.
It's actually very good but I can't recommend it. It's 20 episodes of a guy getting put through hell. Oh, he gets to bang a chick every now and then or look at a painting, but for the most part it's just an average guy being tortured for 20 hours. When he's not being tortured the show focuses on one of his family members going through some kind of miserable experience.
It looks like they've set up season 3 to be more of the same.
It's like they're daring me not to watch. "Oh, you wanted this guy to have some kind of conclusion and go on to live a peaceful life....ha ha hahaha F-OFF you loser"

Black Books if you like quirky Brits and Cranky Irish drunks. Only 3 seasons with 6 episodes per. I'm almost done with season 2.
One of my favorite scenes is where Fran is masterbating to the voice on the radio and the show ends before she finishes so she calls him at home.

It's very different, but in general, not as good as Netflix.
If there's not a network show you really like (and don't have cable/DVR), there's not much reason to have Hulu, really.
What's good about Hulu is the Comedy Central and FX offerings that Netflix doesn't have. For me, particularly, You're the Worst and Broad City. Keep in mind that Comedy Central and FX don't get the next day or even in-season episodes like you get from the Networks (no People vs. OJ or Baskets yet, for example). But it has backlogs of all those old FX/Comedy Central seasons that Netflix doesn't have.
Their original programming is actually pretty solid. Casual is really a fantastic show that nobody talks about, and Difficult People is pretty good.
All episodes of Happy Endings is nice (for me, and the 3 other people that ever cared about that wonderful show).
But in general, it's not as good Netflix unless there are some Network shows you really like (and can't access through other means).
Also, Time Warner is about to buy 25% of it, and very possibly kill the next-day episode airing thing. So, unless they really up the ante on the original programming, they could very well kill the whole damn thing.

It's a great show, but certainly not without flaws. Particularly, this Jacs stronghold just never really makes sense and isn't fleshed out.I agree. I think Bea and Franky are better characters.Wentworth - I actually like it a little better then Orange is the new black.

I prefer OITNB, but Wentworth is great. I'm about 9 episodes in, and I get the feeling we are watching the female version of Breaking Bad, which is pretty cool.
And Franky is so damn hot.

Some of the shows I want to watch the entire run of include The Wire, CSI, and L&O SVU. I am generally more into movies than TV shows, and it doesn't appear that Netflix streaming has a ton in the movie department. Am a wrong on that one? Would Hulu or Hulu+ potentially be a better option?

The Wire isn't on Hulu, or any HBO shows that I know of (Amazon Prime has the completed HBO shows). All seasons of SVU and CSI are on Hulu.
I'm not much of a movie person, but glancing through the Hulu movie selection for the first time, it appears to have a fair amount of newish movies (like Nebraska), but it doesn't seem to have anywhere near the quantity of movies that Netflix has (or it's possible I just don't see them).
I can't imagine Hulu being a better option than Netflix for many people, if you only want want to go with one or the other, but it might be worth a shot (especially for the 600 episodes of SVU/CSI).

It's an awesome show, but I was kind of hoping that S3 wasn't on Netflix yet. The show is just so damn nerve-racking. Ferguson is one of the villains that's so good it makes you hate watching the show (but you keep watching anyway).
I still wouldn't say it's better than Orange. It's just so different. They both take place in prisons, but the similarities nearly stop there.
